Thursday News Stuff

Hi everybody. It’s Thursday—here’s what’s up:
- First, a big thanks to David Hobby for being my very special guest blogger yesterday. It truly was an honor having him on the blog, and from the comments from our readers, he was as big a hit as I knew he’d be.
- Quick update the on the MacBook Pro laptops from Apple. When you buy one of Apple’s new 17″ MacBook Pros (just introduced at Macworld Expo last week), you now have the option of a glossy or non-glossy screen. Although I’ve adjusted to the glossy screen on my 15″ MacBook Pro, I would still prefer a non-glossy screen, and if Apple offers that option on a 15″ anytime soon, I would have to switch. That being said; one of my readers turned me on to this; there’s a third party company called TechRestore that will replace your glossy screen with a matte screen for $199. Here’s the link to the story about them on ZDnet. (Note: If any of you have swapped screens using TechRestore, let me know about your experience).
- Friend of the blog Jason Moore has an interesting interview with Principal Photoshop Product Manager John Nack. It’s always so insightful to hear from John, and he brings a perspective on things we don’t always get to hear—definitely worth reading (here’s the link to Part 1).
- Just a reminder: our Lightroom Live Tour, with Matt Kloskowski, is coming to Covington, Kentucky on Jan. 23rd, and it’s going to be a great day of learning taught by one of the industry’s leading experts on Lightroom. If you want to attend, you can snag a seat right here.
- Terry Reinert has a review of a new iPhone/iPod Touch application that sounds like a very cool app for anyone into PhotoWalks. If you’ve got a second—check it out here.
- You may remember the mini-review I did of the Ray Flash, which is a ring-flash adapter that fits over your existing off-camera flash (like Nikon SB-800s, or Canon 580EX IIs). Anyway, in my review my only real critisicm was that I thought it was a bit too expensive, but now that’s changed. As of Jan. 1, 2009 the retail price is just $199 ($100 less than when I initially reviewed it). Now, it’s a no-brainer. Here’s the link with all the details.
That’s it for today. Hope you have a great Thursday!

HearPlanet is awesome. I originally used WikiMe but it didn’t provide as much information as HearPlanet does. Plus the audio is hilarious. The Governor of Tennessee grew up with my dad in my hometown so his name comes up and the pronunciation isn’t even close.
No linky for the Ray Flash in the blog for today.
Hey Scott there does not seem to be a link added for that Ray Flash. Can you post it in… Gav
What about part 3 of the Photoshop Cs4 news? Coming today?

Hi Scott,
I’m having the same trouble coping with the glossy screen on the new macbooks. I’ve been looking into antiglare film. I had one on my iphone and it did the trick perfectly… Not sure how it’ll do on something bigger though. Found this post on the subject: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/backstage/comments/matte-your-aluminum-macbook-13-screen-a-matching-macbook-stand/
It’s a fast and not to expensive way to fix the problem. If you try one or know of anybody that does. Please let me know how it works.
All the best,
Carlo M
how do i show you something i want to be shown how to create in photoshop …for example i saw a reall cool flyer and want to know how to get it too you so you can make a tutorial…thanks egypt thompson
Dear Scott,
I know this is probably not the forum for this comment, but I am sure you won’t mind.
In my opinion, this latest issue of Photoshop user, is one of the best yet. The articles certainly met the needs of people like myself who have used Photoshop for sometime now. In short, I am amazed at how you continue to make things, (Kelby Training, your books, blog and magazine) relevant and worth our while.
Tim
Scott,
For you and all those out there frustrated with MacBook Pro issues check this out for a good laugh.

Now that is a great development. Makes for a great laugh when you first come in to work
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the link to my blog. At times it amazes me how much influence you have in the photography and Photoshop world. Whenever you post links to articles or reviews that I have written my hit count goes through the roof! This link alone has generated over 500 hits in just two hours! So if the Nikon lens fiasco didn’t convince you that you really are “The Man” when it comes to this stuff… the hit count on my blog should!
Thanks for spreading the word about Hear Planet. In the end it isn’t about the number of visitors my blog gets. It is all about spreading the knowledge and information about useful applications to the masses so that everyone can take advantage of them and increase their own skill and enjoyment of photography and Photoshop. That is why I will always be a huge fan of all the blogs Kelby Media produces, the Kelby Training website, and the Photoshop World conferences.
Cheers,
Terry
The Ray Flash site seems to be looping…
Scott,
Thanks for the mention of our new Matte Finish screen replacement service for the 15″ MacBook Pro Unibody models. We were thrilled to win the Ziff-Davis Best of Show award for MacWorld Expo 2009 and we couldn’t agree more with the MacWorld review that stated “This is the MacBook Pro Apple should have made.”
Our graphics customers deserve a lot of credit here as well, pushing us to offer this service for their specific needs.
Thanks again!

And here I had decided on the Orbis Flash instead of Ray Flash because of the price… now I have to reassess what I want! They must realize they have huge competition going on.
Scott just bought a 15″ macbook pro. I asked about the glossy screen as well. I was told that through the apple site they will be selling a static cling like cover for your glossy LCD that will be installed right over the existing LCD. It will make the Lcd a matte screen and can viewed without any glare. They also told me that you will be able to see this fim applied on some systems at the Apple retail stores in the next couple of weeks.
Scott, just a heads up – your links to Online Classes don’t work. Now I’ve got to Google!
Scott,
Question about the Ray flash. Can it also be used as a macro ring light?
Thanks,
Joe
