Scenes From The Gallery Retrospective of Bert Monroy’s Work
One of the highlights of my trip to San Francisco was getting to see the Hearst Gallery’s retrospective on one of the most brilliant digital artists of our time, our good friend (and Photoshop Hall of Famer) Bert Monroy. What an amazing exhibition (and beautifully presented by the gallery—kudos to them for an outstanding job).
The gallery was closed that day, but Bert arranged for us to have a private tour with him, and it was just amazing. I’ve seen Bert’s amazing photo-realistic work many times over the years, but seeing it at that scale really revealed the incredible detail that he puts into his work.
The shots below give you just a glimpse at the retrospective, and besides his work (all output on the latest Epson printers—including an entire section of the exhibit printed on large canvas), they had a number of important stepping stones from Bert’s career, including corporate work he had done in the early days, his first book (the first book ever on Adobe Photoshop), and even Bert’s original 128k Macintosh (shown below). It’s an amazing exhibit and if you’re out in the San Francisco area (the Hearst Gallery is just outside Berkley in Moraga, California—here’s the link), you’ve got to see it for yourself. Stunning work from a living legend, and true pioneer of digital art.

I remember seeing Bert’s work printed by the Canon folks at Photoshop World. You’re right, his work is best appreciated at a scale that showcases his incredible technique & artistry.
Hope to have a chance to see his work up close again.
Very nice impresssion. Bert told me about his gallery some days ago and i am sure he will rock the house with his prints.
I am from germany, so i cant visit the gallery, but thank you for the pictures Scott

Hey Scott,
Bert is indeed a great artist. I had the opportunity to see Bert at a Kelby Training Workshop in Dallas. One word “WOW”
If any of you get the opportunity to see Bert in person, jump on it. His training sessions are worth the price, whatever that would be.

What I want to know is where did Bert get that great t-shirt? If you look closely, its the Photoshop Guys (PhotoshopTV) spoofed as members of Star Trek.
He is the best, I highly recommend to attend one or many of his lectures. He teaches good technics about photo illustration, perspectives, textures, and more.
Gotta get one of those t-shirts.
Bert Monroy is one of the most talented teachers and artists working with digital tools – he is generous, creative, and a lot of fun! I agree with the above post – if you have a chance to see Bert teach – jump at it! Wish I could see the show in person – thanks for the pics! Katrin
I totally agree with Katrin. I first saw Bert on Tech TV many years ago and been following him ever since. Had the pleasure of attending one of his workshops in Boston. He is an amazing individual with incredible talent and a great guy.
Thanks for the post!

Wow, Moraga’s only about 25 miles from where I live. I’ve got to go check this out. Thanks, Scott!
I was on the fence about attending his Creativity Tour in February and now I know that I will be there! Thanks for the photos and preview of whats in store in his tour.
I had the pleasure of attending Bert’s seminars and have learned so much from him. Hope he comes back to Milwaukee soon. On second thought, you might want to wait until we get above freezing
Bert Monroy is … OMG … I don’t know what I have to say.
Talented – Humble – Friendly – Cool – Blessed
Kudos to Bert. I’ve loved his work since the SuperPaint days of old. Bert always has a smile for everyone, is an excellent teacher and one hell of an artist. I wish I could make it out to SFO to see his work.

Although calling Bert a “digital artist” is an accurate statement, it may not be sufficient for those who are not familiar with his work. It must be emphasized that, “THESE IMAGES ARE NOT PHOTOGRAPHS”.
Last year I spend a couple of days following one of Bert’s outstanding tutorials in an attempt to duplicate a tiny portion of one of his images. Eventually I fried my brain and gave up in frustration; however, I now have a much greater appreciation of his fantastic skill.
Very nice images !
Hey! I just wanted to thank you for posting this. I just finished Bert’s book on his digital workshop in digital painting and it was an immeasurable help in creating objects from scratch and composing light in a scene accurately and with detail… I highly suggest it to anyone thinking of stepping up their expertise.
Bert, I enjoyed very much, meeting you in Munich! Love your work and you are a very nice person!! Thanks, Mathias
