Hi everybody. It’s Friday, and here’s what’s up:
- Apple, I’m Begging You!
I don’t usually ask Apple for, well…anything, but today I’m begging; please, please, I implore you, give us an option to turn Gestures off on the new MacBook Pro laptops. Besides Photoshop CS4 rotating my canvas and zooming in/out all day, now I’m using Adobe InDesign CS4 as well, and now my text blocks rotate when I least expect it. Of course, it’s not just Adobe products (or I’d be pleading to Adobe here instead). My font sizes change in Safari and Email a dozen times a day. It is driving me crazy!!!! OK, that’s it—-just had to get it off my chest. I’m OK now. - My New Tour Dates, and Our New Tour Site
We launched a totally redesigned (and vastly improved) version of our live one-day Photoshop seminars site (now called “Kelby Training Live”-–one of the site’s headers is shown above), and we’ve got the new dates up there for not only my Lightroom 2 Live Tour (Denver on Wed. May 20th, and Portland, Oregon on Friday, May 22nd), but also my new “Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks Tour,” which kicks off in Washington DC on Friday, May 8th. Here’s a link to check out the new site, and the upcoming dates for all our tours (including Bert Monroy’s Creativity Tour, Ben Willmore’s Photoshop for Photographers Tour, Joe McNally’s new Off Camera Flash Tour, and Dave Cross’ Maximum Photoshop Tour). - My Original “Photoshop Insider Blog” Site is Still Online
I started this blog over at Blogger.com back in 2005, and I was searching for something the other day, and realized that the old site is still online, so if you’ve got a minute, go take a quick look at the “old blog.” There’s still some decent info over there (along with stuff that’s totally outdated). Here’s the link to my original Photoshop Insider blog. - Versace’s “Finish the Sentenence”
One of my favorite things on my buddy Dave Cross’ site is his “Finish The Sentence” feature, and last week he had Vincent “Vinny, V-man, Vin-man” Versace,” finishing the sentences. Here’s the link to “Vs” thing. (Also, while you’re there; check out Mike Fulton’s Finish the Sentence this week. Very well done).
Well, that’s all I got. That’s it. I’m tapped out. Have a great weekend everybody, and if you use Photoshop CS4, don’t forget to scroll down and take this week’s CS4 Tool/Feature survey.

Will Henderson developed an InputManager that lets you add new custom gestures on a per-application basis. I posted a comment linking to your post and asking if he could add support to block all gestures on a per-application basis. Best of luck.

Scott, why no seminars in NM, Albuquerque or Santa Fe would be a great location to host the series. Several other workshops have theirs between these two cities and seem to have a great success.
Ditto that from a fellow Albuquerqueian-ite or whatever. Actually there’s not enought people here to do a seminar. Scott could just meet the two of us down at Flying Star or something and we could just give him a hundred bucks and have him teach us stuff.
So Scott, regarding your tour dates- I’ll bet as a musician you like the sound of finally having “tour dates” huh! I can hear the radio ads: (in a deep-tone voice)
“Coming live May 20th to the Denver Convention Center…performing one night only from his sold-out U.S. Tour…the metal mania of Scott Keeelllby!! Get your tickets now at all Ticketslave outlets or charge by phone. One night, one man, one unforgettable experience. Feel the power of RAW-editing up front and in your face- You’ll pay for the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge..edge..edge” (echo fades out). Cooool.
“Check. Check. Check 1. Sibilance. Sibilance. Check. Check. Check 2. Sibilance. Sibilance.”
Re “Apple, I’m Begging You!”. If ever You start a petition agains those gestures in Photoshop, You can enter my signature a thousand times over!
Me too – they drive me crazy. Would be good to see you in the UK at some point too Scott! Kevin
Hey Scott, I don’t know if you noticed, but you typed in the word “Sentenences”
Unless there’s a joke I don’t get, haha.
And I agree with the gestures on the Mac. At the very least, you should be able to adjust the intensity of the gestures, so the pad can tell between more intentional gestures vs. accidental ones. I don’t think that’d be too hard to figure out, right?
Agree with the gestures “plea”, Scott if they listen to anyone, it will be YOU. Start the petition, surfing using Safari is a nightmare, I feel like Tim Burton took over my screen- it’s a nightmare (and that’s a compliment to Tim)
There’s one sure-fire way to get Apple to listen. Stop buying, using, and endorsing their product.
If the MacBook is driving you crazy with a design flaw, don’t torture yourself, use something different.
When their choice is between :
1) turn off or eliminate the buggy Gesture feature
or
2) lose high profile, loyal customers
They’ll realize which is more important.
SK, new Kelbytraining site looks great. Excellent job to all involved!

Scott – I am looking forward to your DC area appearance. Any chance of coming up early and setting up another photowalk with Jeff? I missed you on the one last year.
You guys have forgotten about Salt Lake City. Why?
I’ll be 9 months pregnant at that point, but I will try my best to be there. My dad has promised to drive me, just in case
Stacie:
That is awesome!!! Don’t worry; we’ll have Jeff Revell there as our emergency labor driver.

Hey Scott,
Super! You’re coming to Denver in May! I just signed up for your Lightroom 2 tour Seminar. Really looking forward to it and maybe meeting you! Thanks for all your hard work and energy that you put into everything you do. I for one really appreciate it and have learned a bunch, which has changed my photography a lot!
Thanks
Dennis
Please don’t forget that huge country to the north of you … Canada
)) when doing your tours, we like to learn too!!!!!
Can the mouse pad on the Macbook Pro be turned off if you are using an wired, external mouse plugged into an external keyboard?
I hope so.
Scott,
Do you come to the Midwest? It would be great to see you in Cedar Rapids, IA, but even Chicago would be nice. I know you have a huge following in this area. Let me know if you even need help setting something up in our area, we would love to have you here.
Scott,
Any future plans for Canadian dates? Would love to see some tour dates in Canada, specifically Toronto, as well as other parts of Canada.
Since you kidnapped our fellow Canadian Mr. Cross, i think it’s the least you could do
Cheers!
Scott, your picture on the Kelby Training Live header is the same as your Bio picture, just flipped. Kinda funny to see them side-by-side.
Also, any work on another World-wide Photo Walk?
The first lesson listed on your CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks is: “Layering and Composting Techniques.” I hope you mean Compositing Techniques. If not, I have a big pile of dead leaves I can bring!
I hope this seminar is coming to LA–it looks great. The Lightroom seminar was amazing–a bargain for all the information and inspiration you gave us.
Scott, boycott Apple untill they fix the problem! You have the voice and power to get them to listen.
Unless… you are one of those Appleheads who will buy Apple’s crap just because it is Apple! I am a bit shocked by this revelation Scott. I had more respect for you. I mean come on, when we buy Apple’s stupid, faulty products it just encourages them. That is exactly what you did Scott… positive reinforcement. They won’t listen to any feedback you have to say, because they already have your money. You say, “Please fix this problem!” and they hear “I bought it, confirming that I thought it was awesome.” Shame.
Oh, my wife just told me that sarcasm doesn’t translate well in print (you should know that… VR wide-angle zoom guy). So, I was mostly joking about what I just typed. But only mostly.
Hi, I’m the owner of an italian blog that talk about iphone 3G. I would like to talk with you about your book on iPhone, please contact me through email. Best regards. Silvio
Scott, There certainly isn’t a way to turn off those annoying gestures, but there may be a workaround, at least for some apps (supposedly it works for all Adobe CS3 apps, maybe CS4). It’s called MultiClutch. Read the bottom of the thread here for the workaround:

You can download MultiClutch here:

Mr. Kelby –
How about close captioning your training videos (streaming over the internet) and DVD’s??? Have you ever thought about the deaf and hard of hearing community that want to take their photoshop skills to the next level? There is so much audio that isn’t shown on the screen, that makes it extremely difficult for those of us who cannot hear to pick this up from streaming and books alone. It took me 2 long years to understand the vanishing filter, and this is just one thing. Technically, it is not hard to caption the stuff and long tail video (the product you use to stream) has a much newer player capable of displaying the captions. It is not technically difficult or expensive to caption the material, all it takes is the will to do it. Take a look at lydna.com and they are captioning alot, but I would much rather see you do it, because the material you know is awesome. I already asked your company about it, I figured to try your blog to get your attention. Thanks.
Scott,
I completely agree about the gestures on the new macbooks! My trusty powerbook is dying and I’ll be in the market for a new macbook soon. I hope they come up with a solution soon!!!
Thanks for all you do for photographers!
Here’s a solution to gestures: google ‘MultiClutch’. I can’t test it, as I don’t have one of those spiffy new macbooks, but I see a number of really positive reactions to it. It’s not ideal technically, as it’s third-party software, and is also an InputManager, but if it does the trick, hey.
I would expect Apple to address this soon.
Yeah, Apple’s gestures do kinda suck. I mean, besides “seeming” cool at first, what’s the real use?
Scott,
I just picked up your CS4 Book for Digital Photographers. I also have the Lightroom 2.0 book. You have workflows in both books. So this brings me to my questions you probably have answered on here somewhere but here goes it. WHAT DO YOU USE?
You go to an assignment, shoot and come back. You then…….
A) Goto Lightroom and process it out that way.
B) Goto Bridge then photoshop as in you CS4 book
C) Have a (frosty beverage) and hope the photos process themselves.
When do you Lightroom and when the Bridge/Photoshop Combo?

I just ran across this blog listing at John Nack on Adobe…
Optional plug-in disables trackpad rotation
http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2009/02/optional_plugin.html
Hopefully this makes Scott’s, and everyone’s life easier, and increases Scott’s productivity even more (hard to believe that would be possible).
