I noticed an issue with the provided sync cord when using my SB-800 as well. I ended up buying a custom 6″ cord with Nikon Screwlock PC port to 2.5MM MicroSync, from Paramount Cords…much better fit!

Update on “synch speed”:

From asking in various “places” and personal experience I can deduce the following:
The “high speed” mode of the transmitter (higher than 1/250s) does not work at any SLR due shutter type and principal of operation. Maybe it works for leaf type shutters.

However, I have experienced quite a few “misses” even at firing at 1/250s with my Nikon camera, which is presumably the reason for building a new transmitter under the notation of “speed” which claims to overcome the above problem. Not tried it yet

Great review Scott. I have just one concern about the bxri 500 kit. In looking at Elinchrom’s website, the softbox that comes with the kit looks like it “locks into place”. What I need to know is if it is possible to connect a westcott softbox to the bxri with an adapter ring, or even if the bxri’s allow adapter rings. That’s the only thing holding me up from getting the kit. I already have some westcott softboxes and I’d rather put them to use rather than buying new ones from elinchrom. Hope to hear from you or any others who know the answer soon so I know if I’m going to buy the kit or continue looking.

Good review. I own a pair of BXri 500s. They have been great when i use them with the skyport transmitter on the camera’s hot shoe. However, I have been running into trouble when I try to use them with the pc sync of the SB-800 or 900 is attached. If I attach the transmitter to the flash’s pc sync port, my flash freezes (I have two sb 800, and they both freeze). Have not tried with SB 900 yet. I shoot a lot in large venues and like to use the sb800 as a little fill light. This problem happens on both my D3 and D300.

I also noticed that I can not trigger the units using a pocketwizard, if I have a flash attached to the camera hot shoe. Are these normal behavior? Do I have a defective unit?

FYI – The lights are coming up $1,359 on B&H’s website as of March 30th, 2010! I was pleasantly surprised to find it was cheaper than the posted $1,550. With tax (NY State) and shipping it came in $3 cheaper than retail. Just thought I’d share.

Great stuff as always! Can you use some kind of battery pack with the Elinchrom lights?
Is there a way to trigger these lights like the Sekonic meter with the PW chip?
