Quick Photoshop World Day 2 Update
Hi gang: This is a quick update because it’s after 3:00 am, and I am just beat. We had an amazing day today—the Expo floor was jammin’ today, and I saw lots of cool stuff, met lots of great people, and had a ball (The shot above is from the opening keynote). Here’s a quick recap:
- I spent a lot of time with the gang from Wacom today, getting really into their new Intous 4 line of tablets. They had a hands-on lab where any attendee could follow along with a Wacom trainer as they showed you how to make the most of their new tablets, and I sat in on one of the sessions, and I learned a lot of cool new things that I never would have known. A number of vendors are sellling the new tablets on the floor, and people are buying them left and right. It’s one of those things you have to try for yourself, and then you want one SO badly!
- I sat in for a while on RC’s class called “10 Things you Need To Know in Photoshop” and I was just blown away at the quality of what he was teaching, and how he was teaching it. He really has a gift for training, and it really made me proud that he’s on our team. I literally had to find him after the session and give him a hug. He was that good!
- I heard great things about Corey Barker’s special effects class, people were still raving about Kevin Ames Live Shoot Pre-con, and the Photoshop & Video classes were so packed people were sitting on the floor.
- The Expo Floor was packed today, and when I went by the Adobe booth today, I was Photoshop Principle Product Manager John Nack doing a session, and later answering questions at their booth. Grid Iron Software was there showing Flow and it was creating a lot of buzz around the show floor. OnOne had some nice show specials on their Plug-in Suite, as did Hoodman. Westcott had a huge booth doing demos all day, and all the show theaters were packed all day.
- Today I did Part 2 of my Portrait Retouching class, and after building on the techniques we learned in Part 1, I then did a live photo shoot in class, and then took the images into Photoshop and retouched them live on the fly without any prior knowledge of the subject or what retouches might be necessary, and it really turned out to be a lot fun (it’s kind of cool seeing the techniques you just learned applied in a real world scenario right in front of your eyes).
- Tonight was our now famous “Photoshop Midnight Madness” late-night session, and it was absolutely wild, hilarious, off-the-hook, insane (insert your own adjective here_____) kind of nite. We tried a bunch of fun new stuff, and it was just a riot!!!! You’ve never heard so much screaming, cheering, and laughing. At one point I thought the hotel would come and throw us out.
- This conference made a lot of CS4 believers out of people who were on the fence. In the classes, there’s been a lot of focus on maximizing your time, getting quick return on your investment, and working as quickly as efficiently as possible, which are some of the key things Adobe did in this upgrade, and I think people are really starting to see and realize that. The big flashy features are what often grab the headlines, but I think today a lot of people realized that it’s all the little improvements, tweaks, and efficiency enhancements that really pay the bills. Right now that’s what everybody wants to learn—how to work fast, smart, and maximize their time and investment, and they are getting loads of it in every conference track.
- Macworld magazine did a very nice write-up on the show on their home page. From their article, it appears that they came to the show yesterday and spent the day observing how we do things, the mood of the crowd, the traffic, ect. and then shared their observations in a piece called. “What Photoshop World can teach other trade shows.” Here’s a link to the story.
- Jeff Revell of PhotoWalk Pro posted some shots of my band, “Big Electric Cat” playing at the nightclub “The Estate” during the attendee party. Here’s the link to check them out.
- Don’t forget: if you want to come and check out the Expo Floor, today’s the last day (In fact, the show floor’s only open until 1:00 pm today, so this is your last chance), you can get a free Expo Pass by signing up right here.
That’s it for today gang. Have a great Friday and we’ll see you back here on Monday when I return to my regular blogging schedule.

Reading these updates of yours is pure torture!! When are you coming to Europe?!
I really wish I could’ve been there! I’m sure its completely amazing. I’m hoping I can go to the next one! I did however, get to try out the watermark palette….er I mean panel(why adobe did that I have no clue, guess their just helping the economy but making sure those naming boys have something to do ;-} ) It is completely AMAZING!!!!!! I wanna give a big kiss on the chick to whoever came up with that. It is so useful when it comes to watermarking more than just a few pics of all shapes and sizes. Thanks for Napp and all the Information you bestow on us through your group of people!!!!!!!
Midnight Madness tonight… make sure you save some Krispy Kremes for me!
Looking forward to the next PSW that I’ll attend.
It was a blast last year…
Scott, you forgot to provide the link to Jeff Revell’s pictures of your band at The Estate. Man, you must be having fun!!
Definitely sounds like you guys are having way too much fun!
@Matt: Jeff Revell’s photos are here
Scott – I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for you and NAPP making the FREE expo floor pass available and putting a big spotlight on it in the blog earlier this week. I live in Western Mass and being a photographer that moonlights as an energy industry attorney
, I was so disappointed that I couldn’t make it over for most the conference, but sadly, the Outlook calendar was already largely full. With the expo floor pass available, I cleared my Thurs. afternoon schedule and after one meeting in the morning, made the short 1 hour drive over to Boston on the Pike.
I had a GREAT time! Within minutes of getting to the show, I spotted Jeff Schewe over at the teaching area by the bookstore doing a presentation on Adobe Camera RAW. Jeff is of course very funny. Things were off to a great start. I had a good time at the Westcott booth learning more hands on about the TD-5 Spiderlites. This is one of the great things about a show like Photoshop world, the ability to try out things all set up. Along the same theme, the WACOM area was great. Three things were obvious after spending some quality time with their new Intuos 4 tablets – one, it’s much better than working with a mouse in terms of ergonomics and precision; two, it is going to take some time to lose the mouse mentality (don’t have to drag the pen across the tablet to get somewhere) – the Wacom rep. noted that it takes folks anywhere between a week or two to a month to completely to overcome the mouse tendencies (I’m guessing retraining the motor memory given my brief run); and three, yes, I want one. Using the brushes in Lightroom 2 with it was just fantastic.
Later on, I met Moose Peterson and watched his presentation over at the Nikon Booth. And then it was back to the floor. I tried out a few items at the Nikon counter (note to Nikon, bigger counter next year please with more lenses) and picked up a Lastolight triangle soft silver panel and finally upgraded from CS3 to CS4. I have to note that the upgrade on the show flow was $150, I believe; a nice discount.
I also saw some great training on the show floor by David Ziser, who noted his new book was on the way (can hardly wait). I also took a presentation on NX2. Again, all presentations on the show floor.
After all of that and as things were winding down, I saw Scott and went over to say hello. We were going to do the arms length photo with the Blackberry camera (yes, at PS World with just my Blackberry… traveling light) when Scott said, “let’s get someone to take this”. Scott calls Vincent Versace over. So here’s the fantastic and absurd scene: Scott and me are there posing for a photo that Vincent is taking with a Blackberry Curve. Now, the camera in the iPhone roundly paddles the bottom of the camera in the Curve. So Vincent is bracing his arms trying to get a somewhat sharp photo with the BB. This was a much more fun scene that having a D700 hundred and 85 on my shoulder, so no regrets there.
So, again Scott thanks for highlighting the free expo floor pass. I had a great time. Hopefully in future years I’ll be able to swing the time for the whole show.
Hi Theodore:
Just make sure you retouch that photo of me. Keep working on it until I look like George Clooney.
Great meeting you yesterday!
-Scott
Great to meet you as well. I’ll happily retouch the photo – very minimal to get what you’re after… oh wait, I was looking at me. I wish I could also retouch the sea of typos in my post. Ah, the pitfalls of not proofing the early morning blog comment.
Serious envy here in Texas. Good for y’all.
Scott -
Sound like a blast. I can’t wait to attend my first PSW event in the fall in Vegas. Can you share the playlist for those of us unable to see the B.E.C.’s Thanks.

Has any seen or used a ColorMunki to set up printer profiles?
I’ve given up on printing with a HP Office C7180 from Photosop CS4.
Whew! All that and daily updates, too. Time to head home and thank that Proverbs 31 wife of yours, eh? Just when we fade from burning both ends of the candle, we find someone with flame at the mid-point as well. Rest well.
Another fantastic Photoshop World! What a great job put on by all. Very impressive.
SK, it was great meeting you at the MPIX booth. And thanks for sharing some short stories. Also had the opportunity to meet Rick Sammon, talk about a regular guy. Rick is just that. I introduced myself to him at the after party and I wanted to share how much i enjoyed his lessons on Kelby Training. Well much to my surprise he invited my co-worker and myself to join him. We ate, talked for a bit and listened to a pretty cool band that was playing. Rick is a wonderful teacher, a great shooter and all around super nice guy. I am sure you guys at Kelby Training are proud to have him as an instructor.
And for all those out there that have never attended a PSW, make it a point to go. I am fortunate enough to have PSW in my backyard. And hopefully it will be in Boston every year! This is the best 3 days out of the year. From the opening Keynote to the wrap and giveaways (which i never get lucky enough to win anything) these are 3 days you just don’t want to miss and will always relish.
Another super job NAPP!!
-Bob
(BOSTON BABY)
Dear Scottso,
Absolutely and positively…
The best experience I’ve ever had at any Photographic Conference that I’ve attended in 35 years!
From start to finish…it was well worth it!
The reception that I received right from the start at the registration desk, the phenomenal kickoff event, the innumerable fact filled workshops from well respected authorities in each field, the packed trade show with wonderful vendors and the great discounts, the wild parties, the talented and melodious musicians, the scrumptious food, the intoxicating booze, the constant networking, the incredible workbook (that’s like a phone book) with everything I’ll ever want to know, the inspirational lectures and fantastic photos from photograhic icons in our time, the fun filled grand finale and so, so much more…WOW!!!
BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO!!! To you and your wonderful teammates!
I can’t wait for Las Vegas!
Hi, Scott!
Just wanted to send a quick note of “THANKS!” for an amazing experience at PSW09! It was my first PSW conference, but will NOT be my last! I thoroughly enjoyed and learned so much from all the classes I attended! What amazing talent at PSW09! I am honored to have had the chance to spend a few days with people whose work I regard so highly! Give me a few more years of experience, and then save a spot for me in one of those seats on the other side of the table!
All the best,
Robin Winkles
