Last yr, the MotoGP at Indy was my first real attempt at shooting motorsports. Even with the rain (2of3 days), mud, hoofing every/anywhere allowed around the spectator areas hoping to find that magical angle/view I still had a good time. I never thought the bug would catch me but it has and have been dreaming of a way to get creds for the next one. Well, that was until I read your story above. If you had issues getting creds, I might as well sell all my gear now and save me the time, frustrations and wishful thinking that I ever could. LOL!

Thnx for sharing your story, wish more pro's would more often.

As a motorsports shooter I'm always interested in hearing about successes and it sounds like you hit it! I appreciate the discussion of the credentials - it's the number one question I get asked from 'togs outside the fence. If you make out out west for Indy I will show you around Infineon Raceway - in the heart of wine country.

Hey Scott -- Nice writeup on your weekend. I enjoyed reading it from your perspective since I'm pretty familiar with shooting the IRL.

If you end up in Indy for the 500 next month, send me an email and let me know! Perhaps we can grab a lunch and I can give you some tips. I'm a staff photographer for the newspaper in Indianapolis and have shot the "ring" here for many, many years.

Sounds like an exciting assignment! I'd love to see some of those "edgier" shots you took. Would there be any on the Indy Racing League website?

Scott, great post. I have a question on why you shot Aperture Priority and then fiddle with aperture to get your shutter speed where you wanted. Why not just shoot with Shutter Priority and dial between freezing the action and letting some motion show through? I'm really interested as I sometimes make the IRL when they come to Sonoma, CA (behind the fence, sadly!)

"Overshooting," ...another place where good is the enemy of the BEST? Scott, if you come up with a method for overcoming this, I would love to hear it; although I suppose the only real cure is confidence and experience. Would you be willing to challenge yourself to only use 4GB next time?

I read somewhere that Ansel Adams said "Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop." I sometimes wonder what he would think of our digital overload.

Thanks, again, for another fascinating read with a LOT of take-aways.
