I’m Back From “Terry White Weekend!”
This weekend I flew up to Detroit to spend the weekend with my buddy Terry White, and to do a presentation for his Macintosh User Group, “MacGroup Detroit.” (There’s a funny story about the snacks you see above coming up in a moment).
They are just an absolutely fantastic group to present to, and I can’t imagine any group any where being more welcoming, fun, and gracious to a guest speaker than they are. It really spoils you (Photo above by Louis Levin). This year my presentation was on Retouching Portraits in Photoshop, and I had a full 90-minutes so I could really cover a lot of ground.
Of course, you can’t go up to Terry’s and not have a blast, because Terry really rolls out the red carpet, but this time was even more special because Terry had recently completed adding on a guest room suite at his house, and I was the first official house guest to stay there. The suite is awesome, (with a bathroom that would make the Westin jealous), but what really cracked me up was he had a basket of “mini bar” snacks just like in a hotel, and when I got there, sticking outside the basket was a card with a list of charges, just like in a hotel (of course, he did the thing as a gag, and I got Terry to give me the file he created—click on that thumbnail at the left to see it full size—it’ll crack you up! [Well, it cracked me up anyway]).
Anyway, we were doing totally fun stuff the whole time I was up there, and I really had a blast hanging with Terry in his totally tech’d out house. Thanks Terry for a wonderful weekend, and thanks Mac Group Detroit for such a warm welcome, and for the opportunity to share my latest photo retouching techniques.

Hi Scott ,
i’ve bought pretty much 99% of your published books and they are FANTASTIC , i would like to thank you for your efforts to make such a hard tasks really easy , have you ever thought of publishing a book which just for the effects ? ,IE Dave hill effect , Dragan effect , orton , etc … i think lots of people would be interested to buy a Photoshop book which just dedicated for applying certain effects …………… I need a BIG Favour, can you please post a quick tutorial of how to do andrzej dragan effect ?? PLSSSSSS !
I love the personal and friendly side to your posts too. You rock Scott!
Scott did you bring the beautiful weather with you? I wish you could have left some here, it’s cold and rainy again in the D.
for a while there, i was wondering why you took a picture of the food basket!
pretty nice of terry to do the whole guest suite in his house!
Terry’s mini bar is hilarious, Scott! Maybe he’s trying to recoup some of his out-of-pocket expenses from when he pimped your home networks as a Christmas gift.
Hey Terry,
so you trust Scott so little that you have to put on a cup deposit? Hotels in Dubai have lists of people who steal shit, but I wasn’t aware that Mr. Kelby is listed on those too
cheers from Germany,
André
You Bum, I missed you by one day. My family was out there in that area Saturday for a PBS special at CranBrook. But Detroit has a real cool group. Do Detroit are more “Please”
Thanks
Jason
Scott,
Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come to Detroit!
I wish the instructors and professors I had growing up used the same teaching methods you use. It makes for an enjoyable, easy to follow learning experience! Awesome class!!
Thanks!
Thom
LOL – T.W. is a class act.
Since I don’t have a deposit on the line, I’m going to steal that one for our next house guest.
First thing i noticed: Allmost no Fruit in the Basket, just Sweets…
Terry’s note is quite fantastic. I might have to steal that idea – ooops will that be $5 Terry?
Drat!!!
I was driving back from Baltimore and missed the whole thing!
I’m so upset. I will have to catch the next one.
To be honest, I didn’t even know you were coming to Detroit, you sly little devil!
Scott, I love what Terry did for you in his suite! Lynn and I always put out a basket of goodies for our house guests, but from now on I am sure that we are going to adopt Terry’s idea. Cool. Thanks for sharing!
I recognize those prices… the bars in Mandalay Bay! I saw someone pay $8 for a half bottle of water!
Scott, Thank you for visiting MacGroup Detroit for our meeting this past weekend. Your great presentation on Portrait Retouching in Photoshop brought the house down! You sure know how to make learning painless, fun and memorable. That hour and a half was packed with an approach to retouching capable of doing powerful things to an image, but amazingly simple to accomplish. Thanks!
Why aren’t those snacks Michigan made!?
Thanks for using the photo. Sorry I didn’t have any more real U.S. Flag jackets for you (like the last time) – but Terry outdid EVERYONE with the “snacks,” etc! Your continuing sense of good humor always shines thru in your writing and presentations – keeping you at #1.
Thank you for visiting! MacGroup Detroit is happy to have you back any time.
