It’s Embarrassing Photo Thursday,” (Plus Some News Stuff)
Happy Thursday everybody. I’m back from three-days in the Florida Keys as chaperone for my son’s school trip to “Sea Camp.” It was three solid days without my laptop, without meetings, without working. It was awesome!
OK, about this Thursday’s Embarrassing Photo: I really can’t explain it. I can’t explain our hair. Why we were dressed that way. Or how we got gigs, or dates, or paid our bills, etc. but somehow, we did. Hey, it was an 80s disco band. Not much was expected of us.
The band was called “7th Avenue,” named after Ybor City’s main drag–7th Ave. (From L to R: Drummer Randy Wheat, Bass Player Mark Southwick, Lead singer Chris Denham, Me [yes, I'm actually wearing a square-ended, knit tie from "Chess King."], lead guitarist Tony Llanes [of Big Electric Cat fame], and lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player Jose Herrera). Now, once you stop giggling, we can move onto the news:
- Tom Rocks The House!
First, a big thanks to Tom Opasinski for his thought-provoking blog post yesterday, that had everybody talking. I thought his message was really insightful, and from reading your comments, you guys got a lot out of his article as well. Thanks for making him feel so at home here on the blog. - New Online Class from RC
Kelby Training Online just released another online class from Web Guru RC Concepcion. This one’s called, “Dreamweaver CS4 for Beginners” and if you ever wanted to finally get up to speed with building Web sites from scratch, you definitely want to check out RC’s class. Here’s the link.
Which Monitor Do You Use To Tether? - I have a question for you guys. You’ve probably heard about me shooting tethered directly into Lightroom on my laptop, but my question to you isn’t about shooting to a computer. Instead, this is for people who use a large TV or computer monitor in place of the LCD monitor on the back of their camera (so you’re taking a cable out of your camera, and going straight into the monitor itself—-not into a computer).
My questions are:(a) Which monitor have you found works best
(b) How are you connecting your camera (RCA jack? HDMI cable? etc.) to the monitor.
I want to try a different set-up for a change, and any advice you guys could share would be greatly appreciated. - Is it a photo, or a fake?
AutoDesk (maker’s of 3D CAD software) has a very cool promo-site where they show you different images, and they have a little poll where they ask you to choose which images shown are real photos, and which are 3D computer generated (and both are really there—it’s not a trick). It’s kind of fun, and kind of amazing at the same time. Here’s the link.
- Only Four-Spots Left For My Landscape Workshop in Savannah
Remember the landscape workshop I mentioned on Friday, coming up in Savannah, Georgia? I just learned that there are only four-seats left, so if you were planning on being a part of it, I’d grab one of those seats today. Here’s the link to my post with the details. Hope I’ll see you in one of those four remaining spots.
That’s it for today, gang. I’m really beat (it was a nine hour bus-ride home last night), so I’m keepin’ it short today, but I’ll be back in full swing tomorrow! Have a kick-butt Thursday everybody (and stop snickering).

Real or fake was interesting and more difficult that I thought it would be. Scored a 7 out of 10.
I did some shooting with Sony A700 where I had it connected to my monitor in a pretty strange way. The Sony has an HDMI out along with a video out and both display exactly what would be on the back of the camera.
I connected the video out from the camera to a eye tv hybrid made by Elgato. This allowed me to see what was on the back of the camera on my apple cinema display. This was not the same as tethered shooting with the Sony A700 could do when attached by a usb cable.
What this did allow was screen captures of the camera LCD using snapz pro x.
Regarding the Dreamweaver CS4 class: ahem…”Thank you thank you thank you thank you!” I’ve been needing that class since I’m new and totally lost on that interface.
Shooting tethered to a monitor? Please do inform us, I’d like to check that out.
Picture- circa 1984? It’s so cool that you are still playing with some of your friends from those days.
You need to do an “Embarrassing MP3 Thursday”. I’m dying to hear what Jose’s hair sounded like in the studio…
I took the CG or Real test and got 7/10 which I am happy with, I was going to go in more detail but realized I’d be spoiling it for the people who hadn’t tried – however I was really surprised at a few (I only judged by thumbnails)
A good outcome is with t a HDMI cable. I use it with my D3 and it looks great. It plugs into a Sony W series 1080p LCD television and with a bit of tweaking of the colour settings the images look great. Also, just connecting the TV to the computer as an external monitor and tethering with lightroom through MountainStorm tether you can see them large and quickly develop them instantly to decide if you want to change what you are getting straight from the camera.
The real / photo test is pretty cool, aren’t 3D graphics just getting so cool!
Hum, I actually think Im gonna try this dreamweaver thingy again. I used it a bit before it was part of the CS package (It was standalone for a while, waasnt it? Oo) while I was still in school. Hated it then. But I hope its improved a bit since those days ;=)
Do you have any old photo that is NOT embarrassing? LOL
Sadly, no.

I am thrilled that you are now offering Dreamweaver training! Thank you Scott! And hey, as for the band pic – you were the best lookin’ one in the bunch. By the way, you didn’t mention what instrument you played or if you were a singer in the band.
Susan
Over at “Raisin Toast”
http://raisintoast.typepad.com
Hi Susan:
At that point, I was the keyboard player, and I sang a few songs as well.
Later, I started playing rhythm guitar and keyboards and switching between them depending on the song.
-Scott
That’s really great, Scott! What fun that had to have been. I loved the 70s and 80s. I was the “Dancing Queen” with Farrah Fawcett hair. ha ha. Oh, by the way, just wanted to let you know that I am having a contest on my site today and tomorrow for a new AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens. I hope that you and your readers will pop on over and enter. The more the merrier.

Wait a second here….7th Avenue? Not the “Miami Heat Wave” 7th Avenue? Tell me it isn’t so….That song was a classic! Was that the same band???? This I have to know.
-Bob
(Boston)
Bob:
There were no “hits” for us; we were just a local band trying to pay the rent. The Ybor City area is a Latin community just outside downtown Tampa.
-Scott
mmm.. Columbia Restaurant, Adam’s City Hatters and Guavaween – you make me miss FL.
Hey, in 20 years you’ll probably look back at photos of yourself and your band today, and feel like you have similar “embarrassing” images to share. Times change. Its interesting that we find our current habits the normal ones. “I can’t explain why we wore those black T-shirts with suit coats!”
Tethering: Nikon D2X via USB to Mac laptop into Lightroom through Nikon Camera Control 2…
OR
Canon 5D to laptop via Firewire using Canon’s EOS tethering software. Set your export folder to “Pictures” in Bridge, then you can bypass the Canon software and do initial edits in Camera Raw.
Or you can use Phase One’s Capture One Pro, which is one of the easier programs to use.
Hi Ben:
That’s the thing—I don’t want to thether to a laptop—I want to come straight from the camera to a monitor—no computer at all.
_Scott
Scott,
Do you still own all your clothing from the 80’s. Members only jacket I can except remembering but who would ever remember the Chess King clothing stores!
Hi Joe:
It was a nationwide chain of “cool” clothing stores for men, and every “pop” band and local DJ bought at least some of their clothes there. I dated the Asst. Manager of the Ocala, Florida store for a while, and she got me discounts on the clothes, so I was pretty much, “Chess King” man in the early 80s. It wasn’t a pretty sight.
-Scott
Chess King is where I got my first pair of Parachute Pants and Parachute Jacket. I still have a Chess King Sweater. It is still cool to wear Chess King clothing!
I got 7 of 10 …seems to be a trend
Marc
I always thought square knit ties were cool…really. I miss ‘em.
I got 7 out of 10 right on the CG or Foto. I wish they would show you which was which…
They do. After taking the quiz, there’s an option to see which is which. I got a 6/10 just from looking at the thumbnails, but I was a little surprised which I got correct and which I got wrong.
tethered shooting
in studio i use a projector and throw an enourmous image onto the wall, models (and kids in particular) love it for the instant feedback
Ever think about a small dvd player monitor, not sure if that would work but would be cool!!
Hi Scott. Can I print this photo and show to my client what to not wear during a photo session?
It’s look like you want to make this shoot harder and more challenging for photographer.
I want to look away but I can’t!
you should canvas wrap then and sell them, they are classic
Eric
Well, Bill and you both had good things to say about an eagle photo I took back in December, AND I just happened to be driving by Savannah a couple weeks ago and said to myself, “hmmmm, I should stop there soon for some landscape photography”, AND I used to have family there going way back. Guess all that means I’m supposed to sign up for the workshop, so I did!
I use a 5D Mk II in LiveView mode, hooked up via HDMI to a Sharp 32″ 1080p TV. Works really well.
… and I managed 8/10 on the CGI/real challenge.
You look less 80’s than the others. The only obvious hint of 80’s is the hair and the tie, other than that you’re looking pretty hip. It would be fun to hear some of your sounds from the 80’s.
Glad you didn’t make it big time in the music industry or none of us would be where we are with our photography:-)
Looking forward to meeting you at your Portland Oregon Lightroom seminar.
I just purchased a 19″ Samsung LCD tv and a 25 ft. HDMI cable to hook up my D3 for instant gratification. Works great!!
Love the 80s photo, and the funny thing is that you could still wear those clothes today (but i hope the other guys burnt theirs)
I took the CG/Real test and got 8 out of 10 right. Much harder than I expected, though!
Tethered shooting:
D300, live view – HDMI cable – Viewsonic VX2640w
Great visibility for composing, focus & white balance.
Sure beats 3″ VGA
Had it been 20 years earlier, I’d be screaming at your concerts. LOL.
My thanks to Tim, Dave, Tamara, and Iain: Looks like I’m going to go the HDMI route on a regular TV monitor.
Appreciate the advice very much!
I’ll let you know how it goes.
-Scott
Wow just did the foto or fake thingy and got 10/10. I don’t know what I am looking for and really just looked at the photos briefly so I guess I was going mostly on instinct. Only 2/4 on the next round though so maybe it was a fluke. Neat exercise though and wow can people create some amazing images.
I need to ask a question of Matt K What is his email address. I am trying to load his Camera Raw Presets into my camera Raw preset window. I have little experiance in doing this. This is the only way I could think to get this information. Sorry for the inconviense.
