Don’t Follow Me On Twitter….
….if you’re looking for tweets from me like, “I just dropped my son off at soccer practice” or “Listening to “Precious” by Depeche Mode while retouching pictures.” (Sorry RC—I couldn’t help myself).
I want to use my Twitter account for something different.
- Sometimes I have something I want to share, but it’s a day or two before I can blog about it (for example, one day Larry Becker called me to let me know about a site that was selling 8GB San Disk Extreme memory cards for $89, but they were offering an $89 mail-in rebate. Basically, they were free! We bought a bunch). I was dying to tell everyone, but by the time I could blog it the next day—they were gone.
- Sometimes I need input on an idea and I need it really quickly.
- Sometimes I need your opinion on a training class I’m thinking of doing, or something I want to add to a seminar or workshop, or something I’m thinking of adding to Photoshop World, and I need a direct connection for feedback.
- Sometimes I need to get the word out about something and I need your help spreading the word.
- Sometimes I want to find out how you feel about a particular topic I’m thinking about blogging about, or writing an article about it. Sometimes I want to gauge the general feeling about a controversial topic I might be tackling, and want to hear what you think before I make it public.
But for this to work, it has to be a two-way street, right? So, for your help and input, here’s my end of the deal:
- I’ll give you advance notice on all sorts of things I’m working on, including new seminars or online classes I’m developing; when books are hitting stores, or which books I’m working on, or when we’re considering a city for a seminar, or anything cool coming down the road.
- I’ll give you the inside early notice on anything where I wouldn’t be violating an embargo or an NDA (non-disclosure agreement).
- I’ll keep an eye out for cool deals, great photography, special deals, or anything else that I think you’d want to check out, and I’ll share those with you.
- You’ll learn things on Twitter before it goes live on my blog, and I’ll discuss things that aren’t necessarily right for the blog.
- I’ll respect your time and won’t abuse this pipeline between us. My tweets will be short and sweet, and to the point.
I also won’t be tweeting every day, or on any regular schedule at all. When I’ve got something to share, or need your input, that’s when you’ll hear from me, so I won’t become a high-maintenance twitter nuisance.
One more thing: I won’t be able to answer Photoshop questions, or photography gear questions, or stuff like that on Twitter (so, I’m not starting a help desk, Q&A line, or anything like that), but I will do my best to make sure if you do follow me, I’ll make it worth your while.
Now you know the scoop, and if that all sounds like something you’d be in to, I invite you to follow me by clicking here.
Hey, by the way; at lunch today, I had a really great whole grain bread (just kidding—-that was a “Stunt Tweet,” just to see if you were really paying attention).

Being temporarily bed-ridden, unable to sleep, and overmedicated this week has led me to think…
…you know, I would really find it interesting to see you guys shoot with P&S’s or maybe even disposables, and try to work your photoshop skills on bad but not unfixable images (I guess that’s not very clear though, oh well).
I’m a huge fan and read, watch, attend, and most importantly buy a lot of your stuff, but, it gets kinda boring seeing you guys “correct” pictures that were already 7/8/9’s out of 10’s and taken with high-grade digital SLR’s and such equipment.
Also, j/k.
Luv,
Matt
This is great news Scott. Having followed your Twitter for some time, I’ve wished you used it more regularly, sounds like you will be now. Looking forward to it.
twiddley diddley dee, twiddley diddley dee
tweet, tweet, tweet tweet
Good thing I have it set up so your tweets go to my cell phone.
Scott Kelby got me to give to give into the Social networking craze! Nice Job Scott!!!
You’ve hit the nail on the head there Scott – if more people used Twitter as you are planning to then I think it would become an even better resource.
Luckily I’ve managed to find a good few people to follow that do just that.
Looking forward to your tweets!
Forget the tweet Scott- move on with your life. In the end- twitter is only going to waste your time. I feel sorry for people who follow people on twitter. Are their lives so empty they need to know when people they admire eat lunch and go to the office? I can see for a major event twitter having a function for say reportage- but on a daily basis- get a life folks!
Richard,
You missed the entire point of Scott’s idea for utilizing twitter. He’s taken the twitter opportunity & transformed it into another (yet quicker) means to stay connected with people like us. Microblogging (Twitter) = quicker info/tips/ideas, etc. No standard, “what are you doing right now” jazz.
I like the idea you will only tweet when something twitter’s your imagination. You wouldn’t want to become a tweety bird.
Scott, I like your Twitter strategy. Only a stalker needs to know you just dropped your son off at soccer practice.
Will there perhaps be a Twitter scoop for Mondo Monday’s big news?
Scott…one thing guys like Zack Arias and Chase Jarvis do is set up a public Facebook page that is tied in to their Twitter account.
That lets people like me that don’t use Twitter to still receive the updates via Facebook.
You may be interested in using Tweetlater.com for scheduling some of your tweets. You can also use that for blog posting. I have a M-F tip schedule that I maintain that way. I also use it when I want get the word out, but might not be around to tweet it.
Nicely done. I like to use Twitter to stay plugged in without having to surf the internet and read 15 blogs – I do enjoy blogs, but I still need to have a productive work day each day. Thanks!
Yeahhh Twitter, hmmm…Another one bites the dust…I personally can’t get into it. I don’t have enough time to do real life things let alone add another cyber task to my list of online activities. There’s nothing short of life or death announcements that warrants me to follow someone on a Twitter feed. If I miss out on some discount special or don’t know that someone else just did some random meandering action of life, I don’t think my world will end. And in turn I don’t see how anyone’s day would be enhanced by knowing my every moments whereabouts or activities. I guess I just don’t get it, all this instant technology news confuses me, reliable sources are hard to come by because of it…the media has gone insane with shock reporting. No one knows what is fact and what is just tabloid drama. I personally yearn for simpler time when I didn’t have a cell phone attached to my hand or the instant need to look up something at the very moment I think of it. In fact, I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t look at a computer or my phone after a certain hour (unless the phone actually rings anyway or I need to get in touch with a loved one) I do love being able to communicate with people all over the world but at what point do we shut the technology off and just be human. Where does one draw the line? For me, email and text messaging is enough to keep my head spinning…so I have to put the breaks on the Twitter. (I also think its amazing we as a world have become so dependent on technology that at the simple loss of electricity or battery power would be useless. That fascinates me the most. And yes I’m guilty of being techie addicted, I have an iPhone
But that’s all I really have so I guess I’m not that techie…anyway..)
I love ya Scott and I do check the blog regularly during my working hours when I’m usually in front of this Mac graphic designing my butt off, but I’ll probably just wait for the blog updates. Good Luck with the Twittering! I’m sure lots of people will gain from it.
With all the FB and Twitter stuff, people are on the computer all the time; and I mean all the time.
Does anyone use the phone anymore, or meet in person? How about sitting on the front porch and relaxing with some lemonade like they way back. Life is only different today if you make it different.
Try calling someone today, or talking to them face to face vs. email, etc…. You might you have lost a bit of communication skills via all the desensitized musings of electronic babeling (I didn’t misspell babel by the way; I spelled it that way for a reason).
I use Twitter and Facebook from my iPhone. I’m not one of these “must post every single little thing I’m doing” type people, but when something worthwhile posting presents itself I’m rarely sitting in front of my computer
Scott, I’ve learned a lot about how to market my work in a fun way from the way you have done your blog. It’s basically a big commercial for your workshops and books, but you have such a great personality and you give out lots of great content, so nobody minds – perfect! I definitely buy your books over the competitors because I feel that I know a bit about you from your blog – and as you know, we all like to purchase things or services from someone we know and trust. You will find in time, as I have, that you can do the same thing with Twitter. I’m sure in no time at all you’ll be dazzling us with with your new-found Twitter skills, and I hope you will share some of them with us!
I think that’s a much better use of Twitter anyway, at least for someone in your position.
Thanks, and I’ve been following for a while now.
I’m glad to hear that you are going to use Twitter, and use it in a reasonable way. People seem to think that the only thing you can do on Twitter is talk about what you are eating, where you are going, etc. I would much prefer if more people used Twitter the way you describe. I don’t mind the occasional ‘useless’ tweet, but I prefer the more useful tweets.
Thanks!
That’s great! Twitter is a great tool to send info quickly. Short + Tweet = Sweet! Don’t follow me unless you want to read about my BM! Ha,ha,ha…
Scott,
Will you update your blog to have a Twitter side panel like on Terry White’s blog? (I am sure he will set it up for you if you ask nicely, but you may have to wait until your next big TW gift
That way the tweet can be seen by all blog readers without having to set up the twitter bit…or is that not the point??
Hey Scott,
If I could Twitter I would have you check out this extraordinary photo taken with a Canon 5D and a 5″ telescope of the shuttle.

All the best,
Brian
I look forward to this since I’ve been following you for a while now. Now if we can get Matt on the bandwagon …
Matt jumped on the bandwagon, Barbara

Got you. I mean.. i follow you…see you in Vegas

Scott:
Can you “Tweeter” tiny little photos rather than just words?
Since my mother always told me that “a picture is worth a thousand words”
maybe we can save time shooting back and forth tiny little photos as the
new phototweets, just click!
Scott,
Since I know you have the iPhone, do you use twitterific? If so what are your thoughts on that app? I didnt really care for it too much, but they just changed it for the better with the newest update and its much better to use now.
I was already a follower and saw the tweet earlier
As a twitter virgin, I find this temptation alluring hard to resist.
But then I think: Scott’s trying to seduce the rest of you at the same time. And that makes me feel cheap and used.
I don’t know what to do.
I want my first time to be special!
So cool to find you on twitter. I 1st heard about you from Mike Downey. I really enjoy your Lightroom book and I’m looking forward on reading the “Digital Photography Books” cause I’ve been looking for such kind of books for a few weeks.
Thanks!
Hi Scott…. I’ve got a question for you and couldn’t find anywhere to email you. And I hear you say a lot on photoshop TV that you read all your comments.. thought I ask a question here… could a spiderlite work inside of a westcott 40×40 apollo? Thanks much… great news that you’re tweeting now!
yeah, stoked you are on the twitter! it’s a good way to connect with people and share something really fast. you can find me @bradyoshiro look forward to your tweets!
Scott,
Great idea! I’ve already been following you on twitter, but I’m looking forward to the info!
Have a great weekend,
Stephen
Scott,
Being a photoshop guru, I think you need to purchase and wear it on the show! Especially if you play Guitar Hero (and who doesn’t?).

I don’t represent these guys or anything, I am a big fan of Penny Arcade, and they use photoshop for all their artwork.
You have some good strategies for using Twitter, I use my account (@jeremyschultz) to show my personal side and also to share quick tips on a variety of design apps like InDesign and Painter. A lot of Twitter users seem to tweet about Twitter itself, which I think is missing the point of marketing and promotion with the new social media.
