Late-Night PhotoWalk Update
Hi gang, and greetings from my hotel room in Denver.
Just a quick update on what’s been going on, because I know a lot of you have questions about cities, sign-ups, and stuff.
First off, things have been crazy on a scale we hadn’t anticipated. Our first problem arose when we learned that we had over 20 million inquiries on the PhotoWalk web site in the first 24-hours. We weren’t fully prepared for that flood of traffic, and neither was our hosting company, and we are struggling to keep the backend working properly, and we’re patching and fixing things as we go. The good news is: we already have thousands of people signed up for walks, and new walks coming online daily and….
….well….just thanks so much for your patience through all these growing pains.
Last year, by the day of the actual Photo Walk itself, we had 236 active cities. We had more than that in our first day this time around (we have 316 active cities as a write this, and more than 340 walks already approved).
That brings us to the reason for this post: if you go to a city page that says “Page under Construction,” that means that we have approved that city’s leader request, and we’ve sent them an email with their user name and password. However, nothing further happens until that leader updates their city page with a description, starting and stopping times, the location on the map, their photo, the meet-up restaurant and all that stuff.
So, at this point, we’re not in control of when that city is available for sign-ups—the leader is. When the leader completes the info for their page and hits the submit button, that’s when that city “goes live” for sign-ups.
Also, there are some cities that have been approved for walks, but since their city hasn’t “gone live yet” other people have requested to lead a walk in that same city. I’m waiting a few days to see if the original leader gets their page up and running. If that city start to fill up fast, I’ll release the next leader request for that city.
Also, anytime a city fills up, we start looking for other people requesting to lead a walk in that city. If we have one; we release it (like I did yesterday with a 2nd walk in San Francisco). A number of cities have their first walks already full (like Washington DC, Portland, Guadalajara, Mexico, Baltimore, Detroit, New York, one of the Chicago walks, Philly, Ybor City, FL, Atlanta, Oklahoma City, Portland-Washington Park, Stockholm, Sweden, and Austin, Texas).
A number are getting close to being full, like Vancouver, London, Laguna Beach, Brooklyn-Coney Island, Boston, Tarpon Springs, FL, Bangkok, Falls Church, VA, and a few more, so if you want to participate, make sure you snag your spot soon!
So that’s the late night update. Thanks to everyone who has been so patient through this. We are making progress every day, and we’ll be adding new features, bells and whistles once we get everything settled down.
-Scott
P.S. I’ll have some cool news about some new prizes, new sponsors, and other stuff on Thursday, so I’ll talk to you then.

Scott- I recieved the email with a password and username- but my email also saids
NOTE: This does NOT mean your location has been approved. Your request will be reviewed and we will contact you when approved. Thanks!
Am I approved or not???
Hi Richard,
Mine said the same thing, but when I tried it for my PhotoWalk city it worked. If you’re a PhotoWalk leader from last year I would try it for your city and see if it works. They were having trouble with a PHP script that when you tried to register it returned an error that your PhotoWalk city and state where not entered. It sounds like your past that part so try to setup your city.
RC did a great video on setting up your PhotoWalk city that should help once you get into your city. Take a couple of minutes and watch it, it really helps.
Gotcha- Thanks!
I got one for ya: I did some snooping on http://worldwidephotowalk.com/ and checked if there was a Cincinnati photowalk in the works (Since I’m in beautiful Dayton, Ohio Columbus, Cinci, Louisville, and Indianapolis are all doable for me). There appears to be a Cincinnati page set up, but not yet approved. Does this mean a Cincinnati photowalk is forthcoming? Cincinnati is my first choice, but I don’t want to wait for Cinci and have other cities fill up, only to find out there will be no Cinci-walk.
I posted this on PhotoWalkPro too. I’m hoping the answer will be “There will definitely be a Cincinnati photowalk, just keep checking”.
I have been checking for a Cincinnati photowalk as well, since I live just outside of Cincinnati and there are so many things to see and do in and around this city – so much that we didn’t do last year!
SCOTT how about adding a 2nd day like sunday for us wedding photographers who are making our living on Saturdays. It would also help other large cities and if its for a fund raiser why not get more to take part ??
I would be interested in leading one on Sunday in the E TN Knoxville area…

Scott,
Just thought I’d let you know, no hitches or hiccups for folks signing up in Prescott. While your new site got slammed yesterday and you had some back end work to do, those registering here have been very pleased with the new setup. Many of last year’s participants are coming again, so I’ve gotten a ton of private e-mail about your new Photowalk site. All positive!
Thought you might like to hear a positive comment as you work through the issues that are caused in large part by the popularity of this event! Thanks for pulling all of us together again!
Hi Scott,
Got your note about being the leader again for Knoxville, TN. I filled out the form…but have not received any log in info. I’ve written LeAnn several times but just not had any response. Because I was the leader last year folks are already calling me asking when the site will be up and running…HELP! I can’t do a thing until I get the log info. Any chance you could get it set?
Thanks,
Steve Chastain
Knoxville, TN
Just a quick question, my city isn’t on the list, but when I try to apply as leader it states that the city is already taken – how does one find out who the leader is/applied and how does one get on the list in case that city doesn’t “go live” in the next few days?
Cheers!
Applied as leader for a city where there wasn’t a photo walk last year. Got two e-mails: One to verify, and one that said the walk was reserved. I got some log-in info, but when I try to log-in it says that the location hasn’t been approved yet. It’s been a couple of days now, just wondering if there’s something I have to do I haven’t done.
Hi Scott-
I just noticed that there are now three walks in Washington, DC. Is it possible to un-register from one and switch to another? Also, I signed up for the Washington, DC walk yesterday, was sent an email requiring that I register and create an account, but never notified if I actually made it, so how do I tell if I’m registered for the walk, or if the walk filled up before I registered? Also, the first link to the DC walks is broken and resulting in a 404 error.
Hi Mitch,
The system has a limit of using your email address only once. If you can, apply for the walk you want using another email address. Then email the leader of the walk you don’t want and ask him/her to remove you from the walk. I’ve been able to do that fro several of my PhotoWalkers.
Hmmm.. i signed up on Monday for Columbus OH and received confirmation , etc.. even talked to the leader.. and now I went back to check to see how many ppl we have signed up and it’s gone.. just the night walk for Columbus is showing.
Hi There,
PLEASE list the walks by COUNTRY, STATE, & CITY!!!! It is way to confusing to have to look through the entire list. Especially for us waiting for a local city to open their site or a new local one to be added.
THANKS
Hi Scott,
Thanks for doing this again, I am please to be doing the walk in Fort Myers, Florida. I have an issue uploading my info and have emailed Tommy M. 3 times with no response. I am sure he is very busy. My issue is there is no longer a page to fill out my location info. It was there and when I redoing some of the entries it went away. Please see if someone can help me so I can start getting people excited about this as I am.

Thank You
Scott: What’s going on, as when I registered for the NYC photowalk I received back from your office a link to click on that had my user name on a blogger account page called Dashboard?
Never found out if this meant I was or was not registered for this NYC Central Park photowalk or why did your office sent me an e-mail about a blogger account with my user name? I wrote back, but never received any answer to this confusion of communication.
Can you unravel this mix-up?
Could you find a leader in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul?
Thanks.
Thanks for the update. I tried to access the site and got literally nothing, not even a site-based error page, just my ISP giving me suggested web addresses.

You would not believe how pumped up the city of Georgetown, TX is about the walk happening in their town. They want to help out and that can only mean an even better walk.
Hey Scott,
I was just curious when leader applicants would be told if they were approved or not? I got the same e-mail as many where I am given a username and password with a not saying that just because I got that info does not mean I am approved. Also when I click on the link it tells me the city has not been approved yet. I am really looking forward to WWPW and want to know when or if I can start promoting a photowalk for Frederick, MD.
Thanks.
Hi.
I signed up for my city, got the screen that said I’d be sent an email to activate my account, and nothing has come through. I tried to email the leader to see what to do, and after hitting submit on that page, I just get a large error message. I know how quickly these cities fill up, so what to do?
I’m glad I waited a bit to get my walk site set to go live. Looks like I got in after the big slam.
Everything went smoothly for me, right down to adding the map. The video was very helpful in getting things set up.
My only question is, how do we see who has signed up for our walk?
Thank you.
