Friday Wrap-up & Other Stuff
Jun. 12
1:26 am
Hi everybody. It was a late night at the studio tonight (just getting home at 1:00 am. Ugh!), so I’m gonna make this one short and sweet. Here goes:
- McNally’s New Site Rocks!
Joe McNally just intro’d a whole new look for his portfolio site (link) and his very popular blog (link) and I think the site designer did a fantastic job on both (and an especially tidy job in tying all of Joe’s many projects together in one central place). One thing I particuarly like about his new site (besides the amazing images of course), is that his new site doesn’t hijack your screen by expanding to full screen size (resizing my browser window without asking is a pet peeve of mine, which almost bugs me as much as a site that plays music without asking first). Anyway, love the new look of both the blog and his main site (shown above). Big kudos to his design team. - Catch my photography interview over at PhotoFocus.com
I did an in-depth interview about my photography with Scott Bourne over at PhotoFocus.com, and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable written interviews I’ve done, because he posed some questions that really made me think and reflect on where I’ve been, what I’m doing, and where I’m going with photography, and I’ve gotten a lot of really nice feedback on the interview so far. Here’s the link to check out out. - Part 1 of our Special Series on Digital Camera Lenses
Matt and I launched the first of a four-part series on lenses yesterday on D-Town TV (the weekly show for Nikon DSLR shooters), and we are so psyched about the great feedback we’re getting from our viewers (especially about our explanation of full frame versus cropped frame camera bodies and which lenses work best with which). If you haven’t caught this week’s show yet, here’s the link (you can watch it right online). - We Blew Past 12,000 Photo Walkers!
First, I want to welcome the great folks at LensBaby as official Worldwide Photo Walk sponsors (thanks you guys!). Now the news: back on Wednesday night we blew past 12,000 walkers for my 2nd Annual Worldwide Photo Walk. Get on board right here. - Great Photo Retouching Before/Afters
RC Concepcion is running a commentary on photo retouching today over at Layers magazine, so I thought I’d feature the top notch retouching of Richard Ray Ruiz. Very nice stuff, and not overdone. WARNING: Just so ya know, there is some fashion-style nudity in a few of the images. Here’s the link.
That’s it for this Friday folks. I hope you guys have a fantastic weekend, and I hope to see you back here next week—-I’ve got some reviews on some pretty cool new stuff that I want to share. Take care. –Scott

Cool stuff, thanks for the links to your interview and the retouching before/afters!
Scott – Your interview with Scott Boune was great. I’d love to see the photo from Mt. Haleakala. Thanks for being you.
Thanks to you Mr. Kelby for taking the time to answer the interview questions. My audience really appreciated the fact that you took the time to give each question serious consideration and that you provided such open, honest and well thought-out answers. It was a pleasure.
Hi Scott,
What does having all these big name sponsors mean to us Photowalkers? Will there be giveaways or something?
Thanks,
Mark
Thanks for the link to the Richard Ray Ruiz website, -such a unique and interesting use of website technology. Most people hide “before” shots, he uses them to spotlight the final images. The way he has it set up, you can choose which images to view (or not). And what a difference a re-touch can make! …makes me reconsider some of my images.
The more I think about this, the more I see it as a fantastic marketing tool. Kirk Tuck wrote a post about how sometimes digital equals “free” in the minds of clients (especially commercial clients). Because there are no film or developing costs for digital photography, clients sometimes think “what are they really charging for?”
Richard Ray Ruiz has found a powerful way to demonstrate the value of his services. I am not suggesting that everyone should run out and copy his website or technique. Find an equally unique way to show the added value that you offer as a professional photographer or designer.
Great interview – lots of great advice in there.
Photowalk site suggestion but I can’t find anywhere on the site to email.
Can you have a “remove from this walk” link so that when someone wants to remove themselves (for whatever reason) it’s an easy process. The walk I signed up for is full now and I want to sign up for another in my area instead…but there is no easy way to remove myself from the first walk so that I can sign up for the new one…and open a spot for someone else who may want to join the full walk.
Thanks!
Shawn, you can contact the group leader (there should be a link under their photo) and tell them to remove you. They have the ability to do that.
Scott, that was a terrific interview!
Thanks for the link. I really enjoyed reading it.
Have a great weekend!
-Mark
Scott, I really enjoy the D-town stuff, but the problem is, I shoot with Canon! Is there a comparable show for Canon users that you know of?
Hi Scott,
I haven’t received the last couple of your posts via the RSS feed (Wednesday’s “Guest Blog” is the last one in my reader). Has something changed on your side?
-Don
Scott –
Not sure how many people did the same, but I’m actually signed up to attend two photowalks in the same day – one in San Jose in the morning, and one in San Francisco in the evening. Don’t want to waste my chances.
Well, would have loved to sign up for a PhotoWalk, but of the two of most interest to me – one says “we’ll have a discussion and decide when we’re going to walk” and the other says “maybe in the evening”. As a person whose wife works (and who I drop off and pick up from her work on Saturday so that I can have the car) it’s a little hard to decide if you want to “commit” to a Photowalk when the leader can’t even pick a time. Sorry.
Hi Scott, just wanted to say a huge thank you. A friend of mine recommended your book ‘The Digital Photography Book’ so I went out and bought it. I have always wanted to try DSLR photography but have been afraid to try. Your book has been an inspiration and I can’t wait to have a go now, Keep up the good work ~ best wishes Vanda x
