Thursday News Stuff & My Most Embarrassing Photo Yet!
Hi Everybody. It’s Thursday and that spells trouble, as I unveil my most embarrassing photo ever. This was me, just three years ago, tipping the scales at 315 lbs. The shot was taken in Paris where I was accepting an award for being the world’s largest, I mean, best-selling author of computer books that year.
Below is a shot of me now (taken at this past Boston Photoshop World, where I’m posed with my friends Corey Barker, Terry White, and RC Concepcion), after losing over 100 lbs. on a strict diet (I tell people it was a low calorie, low carb, low taste, low fun diet).
Anyway, it took a long while, but I’ve kept it off for nearly two years now, and I feel dramatically better, and after having my yearly physical this past week, I was in such great health that I told my staff that if I suddenly show up dead, they better start a murder investigation, because it won’t be from natural causes.
Anyway, the diet thing is on-going and I plan to lose a little more (I’ve actually lost 8 more pounds since the photo above was taken), but I’m glad my “Jabba The Hutt” stage is behind me, and now it’s time for some news:
Thanks to Jon-Paul Douglas
Just a quick word of thanks to Jon-Paul for his excellent blog post yesterday. Having such a varied line-up of guest bloggers really expands the range of this blog, and I’m very grateful to have artists like Jon-Paul sharing their thoughts, ideas, and images with my readers.

My Take on the New Wacom Intuos 4 Tablets
My buddy, famous Landscape photographer Bill Fortney says that he’s gotten to a point in his career where the quality of light is so important, that he’ll look for great light first, and then once he finds it, then he’ll find something to shoot. I’ve gotten to a similar point in my photo retouching, but I just realized it the other day when I had to retouch a photo, and I was working at a machine that didn’t have a Wacom tablet attached. I really needed to have the image retouched right then, but I would rather wait until I could get to a machine with one of the new tablets, then even attempt to retouch it with a mouse. I now have the new Intuos 4 Tablet at my office, at my secondary office at our photo studio, and one at my house, and if I’m not at one of those three places—I’m not retouching anything. I’ve had a tablet for years, and I used to pull it out for serious retouching tasks, but since the Intous 4 tablet came out, I now use them all the time, and yes—the 4 made that big a difference. Also, I now carry the tablet with me on the road (Note to any camera bag manufacturer: I’ve got some great ideas on how to design a camera bag that would accomodate a laptop, an Intous 4 tablet, and all your camera gear. I’d totally endorse it, so give me a shout if you’re interested).
Great Book on Black & White in Photoshop & Lightroom
Last week I came across a book I hadn’t seen before on creating Black & White images in Photoshop and Lightroom, and so I took the book home for a quick look, and I really liked it (I’m a sucker for black and white—especially black t-shirts–wink, wink). Anyway, what first caught my eye were the great images in the book, and while I was admiring the images and flipping through the book, it finally dawned on me that one of the co-authors of the book was none other than Adobe’s own Senior Photoshop product manager, Bryan O’Neil Hughes. I don’t know how I missed that (and I later found out that the book isn’t brand new, even though it was new to me). Anyway, Bryan is a really great guy, a great photographer, and now he’s got a really great book (co-authored with photographer Leslie Alsheimer). The book is called “Black & White in Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom” and here’s the link to it on Barnes & Noble.com, and Amazon.com.
That’s it for today folks. Check back tomorrow for a first-look at some new technology for taking your existing studio gear out on location. Have a great Thursday everybody!

Congrats on the battle of the bulge. Food consumption is one of the hardest mental challenges to overcome. I think that being overweight is really a sign that someone has what I call “amplified taste-bud syndrome”. After all, if food tasted as as good as it does for us, everyone would be fat.
I’ve got some “modern technology” tools and tricks to get your studio gear on location and it’s all available at Home Depot. It involves a pickup truck, a bunch of tie-down straps, bungee cords, duct tape, plastic rolling tool boxes, rope and an assistant to follow you in case something blows out on the freeway.
Mega congrats. on the weight loss. We all need you around for a while!
That’s so great. When you can look back side by side it must really feel good. Very cool.
Congrats, we can use you as a source of inspiration for the weight-loss as well.
Anywho, I was wondering about your thoughts about the Olympus E-P1. DSLR capabilities in such a small size. Do you know if Nikon is gonna get on that? Cause I’d love a small dslr I could casually carry around with me all the time.
Hey Scott, as a large man myself trying to lose weight well done buddy thats awesome,
maybe your next book should share some of your dieting secrets as it’s a complete minefield out there !
Congratulations on the weight loss, Scott!
Please be sure to give us a heads up on the camera bag if a manufacturer contacts you. I look forward to the day I can carry one bag instead of ten.
Hey Scott, Congrats on the weight loss. I have personally lost 61 lbs in the last year with another 20 to go and it truly is amazing how much better you can feel without the extra weight to carry around. Now it means I can carry more gear on shoots!
Perhaps a photowalk\weight-loss plan combo is in the works?
Looking good SK! Keep up the great work. Certainly not easy to stay disciplined during a diet. To lose over 100lbs is a fantastic accomplishment. Take the rest of the day off!
Eagerly awaiting for Digital Photo 3 book!
-Bob (Boston)
Congrats on your weight loss keep it going. I would have to loose as much as you did just to get to your starting point. If you could find the time to share with those of us who are more gravity challenged how you are doing it that would be great. Thanks
2 Things:
1) Leslie Alsheimer is not only a wonderful photographer, but a wonderful Photoshop teacher, and ardent devotee of Mexican food and drink, who was an instructor in Santa Fe Workshops Digital Lab. I learned a lot from her there.
2) Congratulations on your extraordinary discipline (no surprise) and weight loss. Obesity is associated with inadequate sleep, and reading the times on your posts and trying to imagine what your schedule looks like, makes me wonder about your experience with this. How much/when DO you sleep?
Congratulations Scott! You look great. I know how hard it can be to loose weight (even a little bit) and the fact that you’ve lost so much is inspirational and very well done. I’ve been watching Photoshop User TV and I actually also noticed that your skin has become much healthier as time (and weight) has past. Again congratulations, good on ya!
CONGRATS on your wait loss! That’s awesome. I have been using tennis to lose wait, I am terrible, but it’s fun at least.
Looking forward to the Black and White book being added to my library. Black and Whites are my favorite!
Congrats on the weight loss! You are looking great. Very inspiring to me. I am currently on a weight loss journey myself. I’ve lost 22lbs. Had gotten up to 275. I’m trying to get to 220. If I can do that and keep it off for 6 months- my wife said she would buy me a camera. Pretty good incentive- but man its tough. Your story is encouraging to me. So, Thanks!
As a person who has lost 75 pounds and have kept it, well at least 60 of it, off from more than fifteen years I understand your struggles and congratulate you. It’s not a “diet,” it’s a “change in lifestyle.”
I love the work that you and Matt are doing with “D-Town TV.” Thanks so much for all of your hard work.
Hello,
Congrats for your weight loss ! You look more as before now…. It is always pleasent to hear such good news !
fred
Congrats on the weight loss … your blog hit home for me. I am currently on my weight loss journey. Almost a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes … thus my life was dependent on losing weight and keeping it off … to that end I’ve lost more than 60 lbs. My diabetes has been under control for quite awhile now. I got a dog (a beagle) and we walk every day at least once. I feel very well. And I happier with my life that I’ve been in a very long while.
Black and Whites are my favorite as well … although I don’t wear black … as I look as if I’m going to my own funeral. Also I’ve never before responded to someone else blog.
congratulations on your weight loss. Agree, its a life style change. Hubby has lost 80 lbs and I have lost 40. Still more to go but am glad we have made the change.
Congratuations on the weight loss. Photography is easy, losing weight is hard. But you’re Photoshop Man, how about a picture of how you’ll look next year!
and here I thought you were just photoshopping yourself in every shot. Congratulations! And thanks for doing D-Town TV.. I’m just learning photography now, and its really helping me out.
Great job at losing the weight Scott!
Hey, in regards to the Wacom Intuos 4 making such a big difference, could you elaborate on why the 4 is so much better? I have the Intuos 3 and I agree with you that retouching without a tablet really stinks, but I don’t see why the 4 would turn you into a soul tablet retoucher? I mean the buttons having a screen is really nice, but after a day or two of buying mine I knew what the buttons were and I don’t even look at the tablet while working so I don’t see that making a huge difference. And, I don’t even think I am using all the levels of sensitivity so the increased sensitivity doesn’t seem like a reason to jump from the 3 to the 4. These are reasons why I have decided to sit on the 3, but I was hoping to hear why you thought the improvements were worth the upgrade, and why they impacted you so much that you don’t retouch without now.
Hi Scott,
Nice job on keeping the weight off mate…I am trying to do that as well, so far 25lbs down after 6 months, quite a few more to go!
I love the idea of a bag which can carry a laptop, wacom tablet and a DSLR! That’s what I carry everyday and it’s a nightmare! I have my laptop and tablet in soft neoprene cases to try and help from being banged about; I use a Jansport ‘laptop’ backpack which I then filled with padding from other camera bags so my D80 and SB600 don’t get banged up. It’s not ideal, but it’s the only way I can carry all that gear on a regular basis. Would love to hear any ideas on a better solution!
Way to go Scott!! Occasionally I’ll see an older photo of you and just remark to myself how different (i.e. good) you look now. Keep it up! We all want you around for a long time to come to help us with PS.
Scott,
As many of us are fighting the battle of the bulge (and if you are not now, you will be when you get older) the question arises: Did you lose all that weight by the described above diet alone or were there other components mixed in such as exercise?
Congratulations on all of your successes!
Gary
Way to go on the weight loss, Scott. You should be very proud! You look great, too.
Scott, Congrats on the weight loss – like several above have mentioned this is a grand accomplishment and is very difficult to do.
I think the comment above about creating photo walk/fitness walks is an awesome idea!
I think you should reach out to the folks at Think Tank Photo for your tablet/laptop thoughts. You have already spoken highly of them and they have the pulse on what photographers want.
Scott…
Congratulations on your loss! (boy…that sounds weird!).
Way to go!
Todd in Chicago
Congratulations on your health! I battle my weight, too. With the arthritis, acid reflux, and sleep apnea, I believe it’s time for me to decide between the doughnut and death.
You continue to inspire me.
Scott,
Any chance of posting how you have your Intuos4 configured? What is each button mapped to, how do you use the command dial, and what about the on-screen command menu?
Thanks in advance.
Congrats on the weight loss. It takes a lot of self-control and determination to, not only lose that kind of weight, but to keep it off as you have.
You look great Scott!
Hey, that’s you with our very own Mike Vacarro. : ) Congrats on the ongoing weight loss! Love the shot with you and the gang at PSW.
A huge congratulations to a small(er) mr. Kelby. I am always impressed, when I see before and after pictures from people who have made major changes to their lifestyle. It’s not an easy thing to do, and staying with it is even harder. You look great now, I might add. Healthy and happy.
Thanks for continuing with great resources for all of us, and inspiration in many areas.
Anyone else having trouble seeing episode 17 on DTown?
Dude! That harsh direct flash in that first photo…….where’s David Hobby when ya need him?
Congrats on the minus 100!
Well Scott, congratulations on losing that massive amount of fat; still a way to go though – keep at it!
I have to say, that whenever we are Stateside, I am English, I am always shocked at how grossly fat many Americans are. Now obesity is becoming a real problem here as well!
At the end of the day keeping reasonably fit isn`t that hard. Eat properly, the correct amount, & exercise. Easy! It becomes hard though when individuals become addicted to low quality food and TV/computers!
Untreated they die, miserably!
Anyway, well done and all the best.
You lost a person…amazing! Your children will thank you.
Scott – nice work on finding Leslie and Bryan’s black and white book – it is one of the best out there that I know of. While Bryan is a great guy, I just wanted to make sure your reader’s know that Leslie wrote the book and very little of it is actually written by Bryan – maybe 20 pages or so. Leslie is a genius when it comes to black and white and her black and white prints are far superior to any others I have seen anywhere.
Congrats on the weight loss ! (We should all quit reading a zillion blogs and go for a walk for an hour a day…)
Liked the note on the BW book – what’s the current thought on a B-size and smaller printer ala the Epson 2200 I used to have ? Best inks/permanence etc. Maybe a post on that front would be of interest ?
Thanks for all your blogs – I learn something every time …
Great job on the weight loss, Scott. Little people live longer… and we’re going to want you around for a lot longer! We’re behind you all the way on this one, buddy!
Hey, can you give a little more detail on how you lost the weight? Going through the same problem and not making any progress…
Thanks! You look great by the way!
