Thursday News Stuff (& Yet Another Embarrassing Photo)
Hi Gang, and greetings from Savannah, Georgia where last night we kicked off the Great American Photo Workshop that I’m doing with Bill Fortney, . We’ve got 35 photographers here, and tonight we did slideshows and some presentations to get things rolling, and this morning we’re heading out at 5:20 am for a sunrise shoot. Can’t wait!!!! If I get anything decent, I’ll post one tomorrow.
First, before we even attempt to describe what’s happening above, how ’bout some love for my man Vanelli, who came through with a wonderfully informative special guest blog and mini-tutorial yesterday. Way to go, V. You nailed it!!!!
Now, to the photo above. That’s me at 16; a junior in High School playing at a Pep Rally for our football team (so it had to be taken on a Friday). I was playing the coveted “Timbale/Bongo Combo” and we played cadences that the cheerleaders would dance to. The guy standing behind me to the right is Dean Amicone, a great drummer who later wound up playing in my band, once I switched full time to playing keyboards. Hey, I do want to thank you up front for not poking fun at my hair, acne, or Chicago t-shirt (I was a big fan of Chicago’s drummer; Danny Seraphine).
Weird Ironic Thing: So I scanned this photo to take with me up to Savannah to post today, and at our meet and greet last night, one of the students comes up and he’s one of the other drummers in that same high-school drum section. In fact, he was probably standing a few feet from me, playing snare drum, at that exact moment. Eerie! Now, onto the news:
- Catch my Telephone Interview at Photoshop Creative
I did a telephone interview that was recorded live with the Rosie Tanner over at Photoshop Creative magazine in the UK, and the interview is now online. It was taped right after Photoshop World in Boston, and we talked about a wide range of things, and I’m already getting lots of email feedback on it. Here’s the link to listen in. - Something New is Coming Monday from Adobe and GridIron. Get on Their Free Webinar This Monday!
You guys have heard me talk about “Flow” (the amazing software from GridIron, which we featured on Photoshop User TV). Well, this Monday GridIron has got John Nack (Adobe’s Principal Product Manager for Photoshop) on board for a free online Webinar they’re holding as they unveil something new, and you’re invited to attend. Here’s the link with all the details. - My CS4 Book for Digital Photographers is now available on Kindle
No one’s more surprised than me (plus, it’s optimized for the new larger Kindle edition). Here’s the link. - Incredible Workshop Opportunity: Greg Gorman and Katrin Eismann
There are only two spots left for what has to be one of the most fascinating digital imaging workshops of the year, as famed celebrity portrait photographer Greg Gorman, and the Photoshop Diva herself, Katrin Eismann, team up for a workshop out a Greg’s Mendocino, California studio. The students get to work with Greg on shooting, lighting, posing, image processing, printing, and critique. Katrin will be showing Lightroom and helping students with their digital imaging processing. Its a creative powerhouse kick in the pants on personal vision and passion! The workshop is a soup to nuts experience of photography, vision, fine wine, and gourmet meals prepared by Willie the Swiss chef. Here’s the link with the details (this is a workshop I definitely would kill to attend!). - Photoshop World Registration Now Open!
OK, I guess it already opened a few weeks ago, because we not only have hundreds of people already signed up (and the conference isn’t until October), but some of the pre-conference workshops are already selling out in advance. So, come on down to Vegas Oct 1-3 for three career changing days!!! (Note: the Mandalay has cut us some incredible deals on hotel rooms—it’s NEVER been less expensive to come to Photoshop World in Vegas than it is now!!!). Here’s the link to the Photoshop World Web site with all the details, class schedule, instructor roster, etc. Hope to see you there! - Answers to your Tuscany Photos questions:
The font everybody is asking about is called “P22 Cezanne Regular” and it’s from a font studio called “P22.” You can find the font (it’s around $20) right here. Also, I made the photo book using Apple’s free photo app; “iPhoto.” I used the built-in template (Apple calls them Themes) called “Contemporary.” I don’t have the printed copy back yet, but I’ll let you know how the Spiral Bound looks and feels (the regular soft-cover perfect bound one’s I’ve done look just great!). Also, it was asked: “How much was it to rent the Ferrari for the day?” I made my wife promise to never tell me.
That’s it for today folks. I’ve got a 5:00 am class landscape shoot, and it’s already really late (or early), so I’ve got to get some shut-eye. Have a really wonderful Thursday and I hope to see you back here tomorrow!

Hey, I think I’m the first to comment here. How cool is that?!
Nice photo Scott.
…but really I just wanted to be the first commentor.
Ha!
Love that photo Scott.
I write a little tribute to you on my blog today – take a look when you get a spare second. You can find my blog in my contact details I’m leaving with this post.
I meant to say “I wrote”, of course.
that makes you second now
Always enjoy your flashback images as I am about the same age as you and these all bring back memories. Fond memories of marching band, enjoyed Chicago, clothing, hair styles, etc..
Thank you for sharing the Tuscany photos. I am presently living 7 hrs. north and that’s a longtime dream of ours to visit this region some day.
Have fun at your sunrise shoot.
Great flashback photo.
Scott: No more Twitter posts? Should I delete it from my daily favorites?
Scott, I hope the Savannah workshop is a great success. My good friend and photography mentor is enrolled (he’s from Ohio) and I can’t wait to hear about his experience.
Amazon is kidding, right? I was ready to get the Kindle edition until I saw the $31 price. I already have the hard copy, great book btw, and would have added the digital to my Kindle for quick reference if it was the more usual $9.99. Oh well.
Congrats for your Tuscany photo book! Coming from an Italian fan, this should have a special taste…
Now, question-time! (I’ll try to be concise):
1) The eternal JPEG vs RAW debate. In this case, JPEGs payoff seems really rewarding. I’m still “studying” your CS3 + Camera RAW book: my feeling is that since then Lightroom made JPEG post-production much more effective. Am I wrong? What workflow would you suggest to an amateur learning photographer?
2) Only one word: ROME! The more I read and know about you, the more I’m sure you’d really enjoy some days here in the Eternal City… Some spots seem to be there on purpose, just to be photographed! I really hope someday you’ll find the time to come, it could be a memorable workshop for you, your wonderful staff and your Italian followers! (Most importantly: I’d give you hints to taste the best food you could ever eat…)
Think about it!
still wondering how you posted the “pages” from the iphoto book, are they just screen captures of iPhoto, or do you get a digital version on the mac until the hard copy arrives.
Anybody can answer this PLEASE
Hi John:
I just make screen captures in iPhoto of the actual pages I designed for the printed book.
-Scott
thanks Scott, appreciate the personal response
also, if possible, can any one tell me what program creates that cool display he used which adjusts to the size of every page as it comes up?
I would be so appreciative, thanx.
Hey Scott (Mr. Musicman…….)
I work at Purdue University, and having read most of your books and your site daily it just now dawned on me that we offer special summer guitar making classes that you might be interested in, check it out at… http://news.uns.purdue.edu/hp/FrenchGuitar.html and
http://www.wlfi.com/dpp/news/local_wlfi_westlafayette_students_build_guitars_at_purdue_20090618
They offer both high school student and adult classes. It just seemed like something you would enjoy and be interested in.
Jim
Hey Scott, Great interview with Rosie at Photoshop Creative. (don’t you love her accent?)
Can I be your “Photoshop stalker” buddy? hunh? Please? Please? we could hang out. and go to lunch! and go on photo shoots. and any number of other things that could keep you from doing your job. Wouldn’t that be great! Call me!
Can’t wait to see the site you chose for Sunrise pictures … always looking for the perfect spot on the coast. Hard to top the driftwood beach on Jekyll, but that’s a little bit of a drive.
Enjoy Savannah!! Always something interesting to shoot– and eat. The Crab Shack and Uncle Bubba’s are hard to beat.
Hi Scott,
I’ve read your first digital photography book and found it helpful and entertaining. Thank you.
I’ve been scouring your site to find help with software. If I buy photoshop, do I also need bridge. What is lightroom and aperture? If I am only ever going to buy one program, what do you recommend?
Thanks,
Emily
Hi there.
If you buy Photoshop it comes with Bridge. Bridge can be used to sort you images but it takes photoshop to edit them.
Lightroom can be used to sort your images and you can edit the images as well. You don’t need Photoshop to run lightroom and you don’t need lightroom to run Photoshop but they do work together.
Aperture is an Apple only program that has a similar tool set to lightroom.
If I were to pick one program to use for my images, it would be Lightroom.
You can download a free trial at Adobe.

Dear Mr. Kelby
I would like to start off with saying that I loved reading both of your “The digital photography” books and I love your humour in them as well.
Now for my questions.
Your work really inspires me to take shots like yours. The only problem is that I’m really having a hard time understanding which setting to use for different scenes Example: which recipe of aperture, shutter and iso to use to complete a perfect shot without taking 5-6 trial shots. So is there a book that you could recommend that could help me out and do you personally have any tips for me? Also I was wondering if you had any plans to do a photography workshop shooting class anytime in Ottawa, Canada? Last but not least would it be at all possible when you have a moment to go to the website that i’ve posted and see what you think of my pictures?
Yours Truly,
Andrew George
Andrew,
I would highly recommend (I think Scott would concur) that you pick up Bryan Peterson’s book, “Understanding Exposure.” It deals with the exact type of information you are looking for and is considered one of the best books available on the subject.
Like you, I too am in Ottawa and would love to see Mr. Kelby bring his show to town. Even if he has to send hometown boy, Dave Cross in his stead…. we’re not picky.
Is it hot down there or WHAT?! I just got back from New Orleans last night and I nearly died. Hopefully going out at sunrise wasn’t as hot for you (that’s when the fish bite too!). I can’t wait to see your pictures. Even though I’m a slow riser, I find sunrise images to be magical. By the by, nice hair.
I plan on getting a similar cut before school starts! (No, I’m not poking fun at you. Definitely not!)
I went to Boston Photoshop World for the student scholarship. Hope it’s not weird I’m postin’ now 3 months later! Had a great time and learned a lot. I love reading your blog as well.
Hey…it was always the band that made the cheerleaders look good. If it weren’t for us, they wouldn’t have anything to dance to.
It would look better with an owl, though Scott.
