David Maynard Shows How to Use Honl Flash Modifiers System
You guys have heard me talk about the Honl Flash Modifiers again and again here on the blog, in my Digital Photography Book Vol. 2, and in my annual Gonzo Holiday Gear Guide, and now you can see them in action. Commercial Photographer David Maynard stopped by the Kelby Training Studios, and I asked him if he’d do a live demo for my blog, so he took five minutes with my buddy Dave Cross to show us how the system works.
If you’re at all into off-camera flash, this will definitely be worth your time.

Lighting is about control and the Honl range give great control in a small package. Great gear for Speedlite location (and studio) work.
Gentlemen!? No thank u to the beautiful woman in the back?
Let’s see… a black camera, a black flash, a black Honl accessory and oh yes, a black shirt. Oh yes that will work.
Not!
A quick correction from the video…..HONL is at http://www.expoimaging.net (not .com as is said in the video).
Hope that helps.
He actually said expoimaging.net or expodisc.com. Either one gets you to the same site
Man, with that open shirt and all that jewelry I was expecting David to sound like one of those New Jersey D-bags. All he needs is the fake tan and spiky hair.
OK guys, It cracked me up at how bored the model looked the entire clip. Almost like she was wondering why she was even there.
Then I realized she wasn’t ever introduced, he didn’t even call her by name, but simply kept referring to her as “the model.” Dave doesn’t bother to acknowledge her in the intro or closing thanks either.
Remember guys, she’s a person, not a decoration.
She does look pretty bored, since she most likely doesn’t understand what they are talking about on a technical level, but she is paid talent… just doing her job. Us knowing her identity does not play a role in the video. I’m sure they were cordial with her off cam… anyway, my point is the focus of the video was not her.
Thanks for the good information! I’ll check out the Honl site. Somebody get the makeup person to at least towel off David…looks like he was sweating profusely!
LOL! My thoughts exactly. Maybe some makeup so that his skin doesn’t look so pasty.
That aside, excellent video. Thanks gents.
Nice video. Seems i saw this on PSTV?
On a side note. I have been trying for two days to watch the introduction video on the Digital Photography Vol3 book and the intro video just sits there and spins and spins and spins and never starts.
Looks like Dave was either going cold turkey to shake an addiction or coming off a 24hr bender, man that dude was shiney, hard to concentrate on anything else.
If he wants to save some strain on his shoulders and neck, maybe he should remove some bling. He could carry at least 2 more speedlights, and a softbox without all the gold.
Why does Dave (Cross) look like he’s wearing his pajamas? Great video though.
When are the results of WWPW going to be published. Its pass deadline.
I read where photographer David Maynard stops by off the street to see you and Dave Cross, does you a favor by giving your readers his experience with the system, and they throw together this short instructional video and all your readers got out of it was what they thought of his appearance? Cold turkey?,24 hr/bender?,shiny dude? pajamas? New Jersey D-bag?. And what the hell is in the water in Atlanta?
This was a really helpful post Scott. Thanks so much for the useful info.
Really great post. I have been using speedlights for studio for about a year now and have not really noticed a loss. At times the recycle will get you but for on location shooting it is great. Definitely will be looking into the Honl system. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for posting the video, Scott. I’m working on building a minimal lighting system, and this was helpful.
Folks, keep in mind that David Maynard might be a reader of this blog. The mean, superficial, and offensive comments aren’t necessary. Would you say this stuff right to the guy’s face? Most likely not.
David understands he had to have a certain look for his brand of photography. A little bling or over the topness goes a long way with seniors, a younger demographic or on an editorial fashion shoot. If you are not up with current trends as a fashion photographer your will loose credibility and respect from people that need to trust you before you pick up the camera.
Shooting people a lot younger and holding on to your cleintel means some consideration to your appearance as part of your brand. Like it or not but chances are you don’t “get it” regarding the business side if your making fun. When your on Scott’s site teaching make fun all you want, those comments are ignorant, rude, dis-respectful and more than anything possible reasons for someone to pass on teaching us something in the future.
Great post, something i’ve been looking for a while, so i don’t have to carry around a lot of gear. awesome, thanks for sharing. kudo’s to steve, good points on marketing to your market and staying up to date with the trends. the appearance of David and Dave doesn’t take away that this is a great product and has value to some of the other photographers out there, all haters should stay off this site and go somewhere else.
Wow, I’m in awe of all the commenters that are so familiar with the Honl system that they can ignore the content and focus on the appearance of the video.
The guy is wearing jewelry. Dave is in comfortable pants. Did this somehow detract, in a meaningful way, from the message of the (free) educational content?
If any of the detractors feel they can do better, please point me to your blog (and leave the comment section open).
As for the Kelbytraining group: thanks for the video. It was great.
Hi Scott,
I’m big fan of your blog, sometimes teach me something truly useful. Thanks!
I know I’m just a fan, but I wanted to know if you can make a critic about a picture I took, it would mean the world to me:

There it is. It’s going to take you 2 seconds. I really hope you can visit and say something about it.
Grettings from Peru!!!
Hi Jano:
It’s a wonderful shot, and I love the name—-it fits perfectly. Great perspective and composition, and you captured a very cute moment indeed.
Well done!

David did a great job. the video was very helpful. the fw fools that worried about his appearance are out of their minds and focusing on the wrong issue.

Cool video, I do a lot of studio stuff, without my own studio (yet) so this is awesome. I wish there were also portable video lights like this but hey. Cool system.
Oh, and I’m 26 and Dave’s shirt is awesome, definitely help build raport if I was being shot or working with him, they say portraits reflect the connection between the subject and the photographer at that point in time.
Scott, Thanks as always for sharing more great info. I use some HONL gear and its a great asset for wrangling in some creative lighting ideas. I love the control this gear gives you.
Thanks again, nice competition as well!
Cool
Most of them don’t have to be displayed at 100% but at the size i decide in the embed codeAnd how google treat the associated flashvars ? ,
