What I Learned About Lightroom at Joe McNally’s Workshop
Do you have something that you really want to learn in Lightroom? Great. Hold that thought in your head right now (we’ll come back to it in just a moment).
While I was down in St. Lucia, teaching my Lightroom session at Joe’s workshop, I had to smile a number of times because I realized how much different teaching Lightroom is from teaching Photoshop. I think the reason is; Lightroom is just so much easier, that the questions I can answer in one quick sentence have a bigger impact for Lightroom users than they do when people ask their questions about Photoshop.
Here’s what I mean:
When I do a Photoshop seminar, people often come up to me before class and ask really broad questions like, “Are you going to teach us Curves today?” or “Are we going to discuss Color Management?” or “Are you going to go over Selective Color?” But in Lightroom, since it’s so much easier and intuitive, the questions are much more likely to be little things that people are stuck on, because the big things are pretty easy. Usually, they just want to know how to do one certain thing—-like does a particular shortcut exist for what they want to do, or is there a fast way to do a particular task, and once they learn it, it’s like it made their whole month. You can see it on their face (and then you can see it on mine).
I see it again and again. I saw it for four days at my Savannah Workshop last month, and I saw it a half dozen times in my class in St. Lucia, and when people got their answer, they were so genuinely happy—-because that was “that one little thing” that was driving them crazy.
I remember one question where the guy didn’t like using the Gradient Filter tool in Lightroom 2 because he couldn’t get it to draw in the straight line from top to bottom—it always rotated left or right on him as he dragged it, and was there any possible way to make it go straight? There is. I told him to hold the Shift key before he dragged. He tried it right there on the spot, and he just got the biggest grin on his face. So did I. Now, he’ll actually start using that feature, and I think that’s really cool.
Things like this happened again and again in the past few months, and I love being able to help out with stuff like that. I don’t always have the answer, or sometimes the answer is “Sorry, there’s no way to do that,” but more often than not; it can be done, it’s just not real obvious (like flipping the crop ratio from horizontal to vertical—-you guys who follow me on Twitter know what I’m talkin’ about).
Now, back to that thought you’re holding
If your “thing” is something like that, today I invite you to post your question as a comment here on my blog, and if I know the answer, I’ll post a reply with it. Someone else might beat me to it (it’s a work-day for me, so I’ll be pretty busy), but I’ll be checking in quite a bit during the day, and if I can help open a new door, or a new feature, or just make something easier for you today, I’ll do my best (by the way; this offer’s only good today; Tuesday, July 14th).
Don’t forget; don’t ask big broad questions, like “What’s your workflow for portraiture?” or any question that starts with “Is there a way to write a script that….” But if you’ve got something like, “Is there a way to keep the White Balance tool from snapping back to it’s holder each time I use it? (another question from the past few workshops), then I’ll try and tackle those (by the way—there is; just click on the White Balance tool, then in the Toolbar below the main Preview area in the center of the screen, turn off the checkbox for “Auto Dismiss” as seen below).

Scott,
I have looked everywhere….In , lightroom, in the print module, you select 3 pictures for a template, How can you rearrange the pictures. They go into the template in the order they are in the filmstrip view. Am i missing something?
Use quick collections and you can the rearrange on the filmstrip by just dragging the photos to the order that you need. this also works for web and slideshow as well.
Trying to figure out how to change identity plate that ends up on the photo when exported. It shows up either on the image or on the print of the image. Can not figure out how to make it larger…driving me crazy!! Have tried the Library Module, Slideshow Module and Print Module…Help?
You can’t apply an ID plate on Export. However, there is an export plugin that is great for applying a customized watermark on export if that is what you are after:

The standard set-up for my catalogs is “Back up catalog: never” and “Automatically write changes into XMP”.
I would like to have these settings, each time I start a new catalog. Can I do that?
I working with lightroom 2.4 and have multiple photos imported on a daily bases. I have the need to make copies of photos to be moved from an external hard drive to the desktop. Is it possible to do this with out having to export and if so can the file size be change easily
Are you importing JPEGs or RAW files that you want to copy/move?
If you want to change the file size you need to do it through export (or print to file). No other possibility for that.
Also, please elaborate on “the need to make copies of photos to be moved from an external hard drive to the desktop”. Copy or move?
We are importing JPEGs.
What I would like to be able to do is move a photo or photos in lightroom from one file to other without having it no longer in the original file, basis of the need to copy. What we are trying to do is us a desktop file to store photos that will be up loaded to flickr. However we need to keep the original photos on the ext hard drive for archive purposes.
You might want to try this handy Lightroom to Flickr plugin. It allows you to automatically load images to Flickr, into required sets etc with or without saving a copy to another folder. http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/flickr
I have my Lightroom Library on an external Hard Drive and then I have an additional hard drive that I want to have a backup of my Lightroom Library. However, I am finding that the copy of Lightroom shows the ? on all the photos. Is that because initially the link to the photos was on the first external hard drive and not the second external hard drive? How do I make an additional copy of my Lightroom so that when the first hard drive fails I will still have a copy of it?
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHEDDING SOME LIGHT ON THIS FOR ME!!!
I had a similar problem.. 1st make the backup drive mirror the external drive i.e. same folder names etc. and if you have named the drive make it the same also. If your ext. drive is, let’s say G:Cindis external make sure that the spare is the same drive letter and name. (you will need to disconnect the original ext. drive. This solved my issue. Hope it helps.
Scott—
Please help. I am desperate. I have been unable to get help from Adobe or Kelby Online training to which I am a subscriber.
I am using Lightroom 2.0. Attended your seminar in Denver. Very helpful. I shoot with a Nikon D90–in RAW—and download to LR from a card reader. JPEGS download fine. NEF (RAW) files do not. The preview pics are grayed out, and when I attempt to *Convert to DNG and import* I get the error message *Files Unsupported or Damaged*. Yet the same files download fine to the Bridge, Picassa, and Photomechanics. What gives here. Please let me hear from you. I will convert my monthly Kelby Online to an annual, anything—-but I cant wait until October to corner you in Vegas. Plzzzzz help.

You said that you use Lightroom 2.0 and the Nikon D90. D90 support isn’t available in Lightroom 2.0. It is supported at Lightroom 2.1 at least. I recommend you update to the latest version of 2.4.
Here’s info on the Lightroom 2.1 update that supports the Nikon D90:
The Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 2.1 update includes these enhancements:
• Additional camera support for the Canon 50D, Canon 1000D (Digital Rebel XS/EOS Kiss F), Nikon D700, Nikon D90, Sony A900, and more
• Several corrections for issues introduced by the Lightroom 2 release

What version of Lightroom? Have you tried converting to DNG using the 4.6 DNG converter?
NEF or DNG? This one’s been bugging me for a while and is really an opinion question. I have about 8000 Nikon NEF images in my growing LR library. Should I convert them all to DNG files? Is there an advantage one way or the other? Adobe would, obviously, like me to change, but is it worth it?
And thanks, Scott, for your blog and this opportunity!
The 2 main advantages as I see them to DNG are:
1. The filesize is typically smaller than the raw files (both Nikon or Canon) about 1 MB per picture in my case (Canon EOS 5DII)
2. What I really like is there are no more xmp sidecar files to lose. All the lightroom edits are included in the DNG file so when you copy them to another machine/library you don’t lose any of the editing.
I’m using Lr 2.4 and in Matt Kloskowski tutorial i saw he has collections in all modules but i cant see my collections in dev mode. In the rest of modules i see it only in dev don’t.
Thanks for answer.
I’ve tried printing from LightRoom (2.4) several times. However, the results are less than desirable as they are always different than printing the same images from Photoshop CS4. Basically the colors are off and the pictures are muddy compared to PS prints. I’m using the same profiles and settings in both. What am I doing wrong??
Yes…me, too. Did you get a response, Kyle?
I print from lightroom and I’m not having problems.
1.Are you printing from the same workstation on both programs?
2. Is you monitor profiled?
3. Are you working from a laptop or stationary workstation?
4. Are you printing with both programs in the same light?
5. Are you using soft proofing?
6. Are you letting you printer choose the profile or are you using specific media profiles?
7. Are you choosing the same printer resolution perameters?
Every choice makes a difference concerning the results. Double check each and every parameter of you print module as compared with CS3 or CS4 … to insure apples and apples etc… as far as workstation, profiling, module parameters.
I have found that I need to print sharper that my monitor shows … but this common due to restrictions of almost all monitors. I have found I need to over saturate a tad as well for the same reasons. I use a macpro and if I were using a higher end monitor this would not be as necessary in all likelhood. Let me know if this helps at all.

All of a sudden when I highlight several images to make a “global” notation (like a rating or color code) only the one I am actually on responds to the command. How do I enable the multiple image response again?
Make sure you are in Grid mode, Madeleine. If you make these changes by selecting photos in the strip across the bottom, only the first image will accept the change.
I’m trying to use the skin softening tool in LR2 and it’s leaving a big red bullseye on the photo of my client. I’ve used this tool before and haven’t had this problem. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing incorrectly?
Hit the O key to ‘remove’ the ‘overlay’
I have had a chronic problem with the Lightroom slideshow module for months, with regards to adding music. I have posted request for help with this issue on forums with out success.
After adding my images to the slideshow I select the soundtrack, which takes me to the music folder and then to my itunes folder, there I find a list of various albums with a plus(+) icon beside it. I click on the icon and it disappears, but the album title remains instead of a list of the various songs. I click on the album which then appears in the soundtrack field, where I imagine the song would be and still no sound no music. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you can offer, thanks.
Best regards,

i neglected to mention after my last selection I then start the slideshow, and still no sound no music, thanks again.
How can I print an 8×10 or 8.5 x 11 in the LR print module? I don’t see that size choice available. I also want to be able to print borderless from LR.
Thanks in advance!
It is there but you HAVE TO BE IN DEVELOP MODE and choose CROP … it is an ASPECT parameter … so you have to use the drop down to choose an aspect to crop to. This is one of the failures of Lightroom HELP …. jeez … can’t believe they don’t include this basic information. It was a head scratcher for me too, but I stayed with it.
I am having a problem with adding a soundtrack to 2.4 as well. Waiting for help!!!
I’m having the problem of adding music to slideshows in LR 2.4 also. My nephew who works in the computer field said that music I buy from itunes is coded someway so it won’t work on something that might be published.
I found if I use music off a cd that I burned to my pc it plays, but the song was over before the slideshow was. Help.
I also bought some loop music that I can’t get to work.
Anyway have any ideas how to help?
Hi,
I have learned to work with lightroom. It took me a while to skip the traditional Zoombrowser and windows systematic, or rather, non-systematic way of building a library with my photo’s.
Lightroom 1.2 had the ability to make web slideshows. Now when I want to do that with LR 2.4 the program ends responding and closes.
What to do?
Kind regards,
Johan Bonefaas
by the way, the website is being rebuilt at the moment.
Hi, I have seen that when I shoot in JPG/ RAW then make my edits and export to JPG or TIFF and then send my images to a lab they come back dark. On the other hand, the same JPG images not handled by lightroom come out fine, true colors, density, etc. Is there a bug you are aware of in Lightroom2.4 or an adjustment I am missing. I have my monitor calibrated correctly so that isn´t part of the equation. (even if it were all my prints would be dark, not just the RAW files). Thanks!
I have just loaded LR 2.4. I use a Canon 20D. When I click on a raw image in LR it says that the image is OFFLINE or MISSING. What does that mean? I can’t use any of the adustment tools.
I can’t find an answere anywhere.
Please I need to know ASAP.

Hi all. I realize it is WELL past the date of the initial post, but I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this one. I exported to jpeg using a max long side dimension of 3000 pixels. The RAW files I did this to came up at the expected 3000 x 2000 pixel dimension. The dng files (exported to jpeg), however, came up at a very strange 3000 x 1993.
Anyone know why this is?
Is there a way to run more interesting slideshows directly from the slideshow module? It would be great to have a scrolling, or conveyor style (Even airtight autoviewer) to choose from. This would be used in our live tethered even photography where photos are instantly projected as shot. Any ideas?
I started to learn Lightroom sometime ago, then I tought to myself: I already use PhotoShop, so why use Lightroom? I thought that I was duplicating lots of things. But after seeing so many people using it, I wonder if should use either or. Is there a specific reason (technically), that I would benefit from Lightroom more than Photoshop? I use the later strictly for photos. Any help would be appreciated. Best regards.

Hi Scott,
is there a way to watermark pictures which are exported through the Web-Module when using one of the Airtight Flash galleries?
The HTML Gallery has the feature in it’s preferences but the Airtight galleries don’t. Quite odd, isn’t it?
Best regards
Aaron
In light room I am getting an error message that states general photo-4JPG IS OFFLINE OR MISSING.
How do I correct this and rename the photo?
Hey W, I used to have that problem as well when I would move photo’s to different folders on my hard drive. If you right click the photo you will see the option “show in explorer”. After clicking on it you just locate the original in your hard drive and you’re done. Hope this helps.
For clarity, you right click the photo from inside Lightroom, not your hard drive.
