It’s Photo Walk Friday!!!!! Whoo Hooo!!!
It’s finally here—-my 2nd Annual World Wide Photo Walk is tomorrow, and by tomorrow night more than 30,000 photographers around the world will collectively have taken literally millions of photos as part of their local Photo Walks. That just boggles my mind!
Here’s a few last minute Photo Walk things:
(1) Walk Leaders: Make Sure You Watch my Video
If you’re leading a walk, I made a special video (Called “A Special Message from Scott”) to help you make your walk a success, and there’s some VERY important info in that video, so please make absolutely sure you watch it before your walk. You’ll find this video when you log into your local walk page.
(2) Matt’s Workflow Video is Live!
We’ve now posted Matt’s Lightroom Workflow videos, including a video on how to upload your photos for the contest. Here’s the link.
(3) 30,000 and Counting!
By the time you read this, we’ll be well past 30,000 registered walkers. I’m lovin’ it!!!!!! What a great Saturday we’re going to have!!!!
(4) Get a Group Shot Right at the Beginning
Don’t forget to take a group shoot before you head out for your walk (it’ll be much harder to corral everybody after the shoot, so get one right before you head out).
(5) Don’t miss My Other Post Today about Something Very Special for All Walkers!
It’s way cool, and we’ve never done anything like it before.
(6) This is The Gear I’m Taking on My Photo Walk
A Nikon D-5000 camera with just one lens; an 18-200mm f/3.5 – f/5.6 VR lens. I’ll have my Hoodman Loupe with me; my Rapid Strap, and my Epson P-6000 will be in my camera bag for on-site back-up. That’s right—I’m travelin’ light, baby!
(7) Wear Really Comfortable Shoes
You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you wear shoes that make your feet happy.
(8) Charge all your batteries tonight
Don’t forget to charge your camera batteries, clean your lenses (and sensor), and make sure you’ve got an empty memory card and a back-up.
(9) The Most Important Thing Is….
That you all stay safe. Look out for each other on the walk. Drink plenty of water beforeh and during the walk. Keep an eye on your gear at all times. Don’t go into scary-looking areas, traipsing down deserted alleys, or anyplace that looks unsavory. Don’t get distracted by shooting—you don’t want to bump into, or trip over, anything. Get some great shots, and I’ll see you back here on Monday for a recap of the event.
A special thanks to our wonderful sponsors who made all of this happen, and to all the photographers around the world who volunteered to lead walks, and my humble thanks to you all for being a part of his historic photography event;
All my best,
-Scott

Is there a way that I can download your video guide? At the moment we do not hold the event here in my city. But I think it can be very useful for a photowalk I’m planning to do with my students. Thank you.
Really looking forward to the walk….
Just wondering about your decision to replace the D300 with a D5000…. What made you decide to switch? I have a D70 and I’m looking to upgrade to the D300, is there any reason I should consider the D5000?
Thanks
Hi Mike:
You’d have to go back a couple of weeks and read about my trip to Tuscany. The whole D-5000 story is in there.
-Scott
Mike, have a look at this earlier post:
http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2009/archives/5202
Scott talks about the D5000 about 1/3 of the way through the post.
can’t wait for tomorrow! it’s raining hard here now and i hope it stops tomorrow so we can enjoy our walk…
Looking forward to it, even if we have wonderful liquid sunshine here in Brighton!
I can’t wait, we’re supposed to get a little rain just before the walk starts, then clear up with temps in the 70’s. Great for Ohio in July.
I’m really excited, but our local weather says thunderstorms all day tomorrow T.T. I’m worried about what’s going to happen if that comes true; I for one haven’t got any special gear to use in rainy conditions.
I’m heading out with my D5000 and a 35mm f1.8, default Nikon strap. I don’t have any good zooms yet (I do have the 18-55 my camera came with; I’m debating whether to bring it along or not), so it’s gonna be all prime for me. No funds to afford any of the other items Scott is carrying yet, and beside I don’t want to go and buy a strap without being able to try it out first.
How do other people handle white balance and ISO on the D5000? I usually leave WB on auto and ISO wired to the Fn button. I wish I had a good way to control WB too, but if I set it on the screen I chronically forget to change it because it takes a bunch of button presses. The one feature I want from the D90 is a pair of dedicated WB and ISO buttons.
I am taking just my Nikon D60 and the Nikon 35mm f1.8. I am going prime time tomorrow.
HI Eli:
Great idea!!!! I almost decided to shoot my 50mm f/1.4 all day. If it looks really cloudy, I probably will.
-Scott
Thank You!! I was inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson so on my D60 I get like a 52mm equivalent. Tomorrow is dedicated to him and no cropping of my images will occur!! It will be one heck of an experience
Scott,
I’m getting an incorrect url error when I enter my city in the Lightroom export dialog. I’m entering madison-wi-usa. Is there something wrong with the authentication portion of the plug-in?
I’m having the same problem with pittsburgh-pa-usa.
I tried everything, then I reset my password and tried again and it work. Good luck.
I am SOOOOO excited about this walk! I just bought a new lens and had it overnighted to make sure it was here on time. I got it yesterday and I plan on spending all day today playing with it so I am ready for tomorrow!! Way to bring the world together, Scott!
Hi Scott,
Can’t wait to meet you and take some great pictures tomorrow! My daughter and I are both signed up for your walk in Ybor.
See you soon!
Tamara
Hi Scott,
It may have been covered and I may have missed it. What is the timeframe for uploading pics after the walk. I can’t wait till tomorrow here in Chicago and Monday to see Matt’s Lightroom Extravaganza!!
Cary, you have until next Saturday, July 25th at 11:59pm to upload your photos to the photowalk website. Check out http://worldwidephotowalk.com/blog/2009/07/15/the-big-e-usa-today/
We’re ready to go here in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA and excited about the walk. Thanks for organizing this great event!
W
Scott,
I’m getting the same incorrect url error for pewaukee-wi-usa in my Lightroom dialog export as well. Sounds like a pattern here! Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Mine worked yesterday, but not today! Problem at mission control?
FIXED!
Scott, you screwed me up with your post title today. I got so excited, I skateboarded all the way to the starting point of the Photowalk in Buffalo. When I got there I realized that the walk doesn’t take place until tommorow.
It’s finally come! I have waited a year for this!!!!!! I just created some information that I hope will help photowalks that haven’t started yet.
How to Avoid a Complete Worldwide Photowalk FAIL! http://is.gd/1CkXV
Damn I wish I was coming with you guys. Maybe you can organize a winter one a few months from now?
Have fun
Hey Scott looking forward to walking with you again this year. Last year was over the top fun, met some really nice people. I’m going crazy trying to decide on the lens, like you I want to travel light. I just have too many lens that I love
At this moment I am planning to use the 18-200, or maybe the 20mm, or maybe the 50mm, don’t want to forget the 24-70mm. Guess I’ll see whats happens in the morning. See you out there.
So I just practiced uploading a picture from Lightroom and hit export thinking I could just delete it from my account on the Dashboard Media area. It says I can’t delete it. Does that mean the random picture I just added has to be one of my two for the photo walk which I haven’t even gone on yet? Anybody make this bone head mistake like me?
Yes I did the same thing………
my group leader could remove my photo…
Got back from the local walk a bit ago, and have been sorting through photos. It’s so hard to pick 2 to submit. We had a great time and I’m hoping we can get a local group together from this. Thanks for setting it up, you rock!
Question: any rules about how manipulated our submissions can be?
I’m the leader for the St. Louis walk. Everybody keeps asking me why we can’t view the images we upload. All we can see is a little square-cropped thumb of the image we uploaded. It would be nice to be able to view everyone’s images. So what’s the deal? I looked through all of the instructional videos and notes, but can’t find anything on this. Thanks!
I’ve also heard of a couple problems where people have uploaded the wrong image or too many by accident and they can’t take them back down. Can we get a delete function, or at least a way to say ‘look at these two, the rest were an accident’?
Hello Scott,
I attended the Photowalk in Birmingham, Alabama today led by Jeff Rease, who was very informative about our plans for the evening. I am not sure how many we had in our group, but we had a great time. Weather was perfect and I am sure there will be some great photos. I am so glad I was able to attend and plan to do it again next year.
