Making Photographic History
Well, it’s in the History Books now, but this weekend’s Worldwide Photo Walk, by any measure, was a really amazing event. To have that many people (final count: 32,000+ registered walkers), all sharing a social event of this scale, and taking millions of photographs, is just a very special thing to be a part of—just ask anyone would joined one of the 900+ walks around the world on Saturday. Just….wow!
On Sunday, I ran into one of the participants on my Ybor City, Florida walk, and he was going on and on about how much he enjoyed the walk, and how surprised he was at how much he enjoyed it. He said he had never done anything like that before, and really didn’t know what to expect. In fact, he said he really wondered what all the fuss was about, but now he knows. That spoke volumes. You can read about it. See pictures of it. But you just have to do it once, and then you “get it.” Now, he totally gets what all the fuss is about.
One of the most exciting things for me, was watching our Twitter group (hashtag SKPhoto) and Tweets from walkers around the world during their walk. I Tweeted a number of times during my local walk, posting photos and comments, but just sitting there at the restaurant afterward, and seeing posts pop-in with comments as walks were starting or ending all over, was just incredible. Almost kinda surreal as it was all happening in real time.
My local Ybor City event was a blast. I had such a great group—just the best folks, and although it was fairly hot in the sun, we had lots of overhangs and balconies along our route, and some non-expected cool breezes that helped a lot, and really made for a pleasant walk, considering we were talking in Florida in July. (The group photo at the top of this post was taken by Erik Kuna).
RC Concepcion came along to help me out, and he was really helpful (he did a mini-session on shooting for HDR), and he got some great shots himself, borrowing an SB-800 flash and setting up shoots along the way.
I hardly took any shots at all—I spent most of my time visiting with walkers in my group and answering questions, and it was just as well, cause the few shots I did take were pretty lame, as is evidenced by my Lightroom grid above (click on it for a larger view. Please don’t chuckle). But it didn’t spoil my day—I had such a great time.
Our ending spot was The Spaghetti Warehouse in Ybor Square, where we had one long table for 50 set up just for us. The restaurant really rolled out the red carpet for us—they were fantastic—very accommodating, and the service was excellent! We spent about two hours sharing stories, photos, laughs, and lots of great spaghetti!
Anyway, it was just such a kick to think that the same thing was happening, had just happened, or was about to happen all over the world that same day, with photographers all sharing in the experience.
SPECIAL NOTE: Tomorrow I’m doing a Photo Walk Q&A for everyone who walked in, or led a Walk, with lots of info on stuff you guys want to know, so make sure you check back here tomorrow for LOTS of new details, and contest info, plus where to see lots of really amazing photos.
- My thanks to everyone who attended my walk, and who participated in other walks around the world.
- A big, big thanks to the volunteers who organized and led walks around the world (We couldn’t have done it without you).
- Also, a thanks to my book Publisher Peachpit Press, for their major support of this event, and to all the sponsors who pitched in to make this something very special.
Hey, whatdasay we do this again next year!

Scott,
Thx so much for having the idea of the photowalk and the initiative for putting it together. It was an amazing day for me, and I believe for a lot of people. I had to be out of the country for work, I am in Hyderabad, India. So I signed up for the walk here. WOW, I got to see things that I would likely never have seen. I meet a group of people that were just amazing. They have a Photography Club (you can find them at FLICKR, http://www.flickr.com/groups/hpc/) not only are they great photographers, but really nice people. They welcomed me in. Thx Scott for the brilliant idea and thx for the people in the Hyderabad walk.
Cant wait till next year!
Tiago
Thank you Scott. I’m proud to be part of this piece of photographic history.
Looking forward to 2010.
Ian
All those in attendance on the Photo Walk I led here in San Francisco (North Beach) had a great time, myself included. Thanks for putting this together. Until 2010!
Scott and group,
Thanks for putting on the Worldwide Photo Walk. This was my first year to participate, and I am looking forward to next year already, with a goal of owning a DSLR by then.
I was in the Ann Arbor, Michigan group, and loved seeing parts of a city that I love that I’ve never noticed before. We’ve been enjoying the most beautiful weather, here, too, and Saturday was no exception.
Thanks for all that you do for us photographer and artist types!
Brooke
What a wonderful morning! – The Early Bird group gathered at 4 AM to get the first sunlight, and everyone thougth that it was a wonderful way to start a saturday i july. Due to the early hour we had to “bring our own” – we ended at a terrace with a superb view of Stockholm where we had coffe a talked for over one hour. I’m sure that we’ll do it next year again. Thanks to Scott, Brad, RC and everyone else involved in organizing this event.
Our pictures will be found here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/earlybird2009/
Wow Carl,
What an excellent idea to start at sunrise.
Mike
looking forward to 2010! it was a lot of fun last weekend!
Thank you Scott.
We had a great time but we all get wet in the rain by the end of the walk. But it was fun.
Can’t wait till next year.
Hi Scott,
Had a great group of people join me again this year in Stirling, Scotland. Cool to be part of such an amazing worldwide event. Already looking forward to next year!!!!!!
Scott, I led the Cincinnati leg. Great time! Met a lot of cool people and made some new friends. Like you I didn’t take many pictures, I spent most of my time conversing with the rest of the walkers. I got some comments through the WWPW website from people that wanted to attend but because they were wedding photographers they couldn’t(Saturdays are always busy for the wedding photographers). Next year could we maybe do a two day Saturday and Sunday, or possibly do just Sunday? Just a thought. Thanks again!
Such a wonderful event you’ve put together. Thank you. Can’t wait for 2010 Photowalk.
Hey Scott,
got a couple of questions about submitting photos ( no I don’t need help uploading them, I watched the videos that make it a no brainer..lol ).
My questions are:
I read something that said a maximum of 2 photos you can upload for the competition, but I have noticed some participants in the walk I attended have uploaded several more than that ( I want to remain eligible for any prizes cuz they are all way cool )
and I have way more than 2 images I would consider entering if that’s permitted.
The next is, what if by chance the walk leader doesn’t meet the August 1, 11:59 EST deadline? Does that take us out of the competition completely and is that a separate thing from the rest of the competition? ( In other words a photo could win leaders best pick and any of the other prizes as well and if the leader messes up we’re still ok for the rest of any other prizes )
I know that lightroom is the preferred method for preparing the images, but how much photoshop and to what extent? ( like can we put a multi photo layout together, or just do some minor color correction and filtration )
If you can please post something here and/or on the photowalk site that would be great!
hey , maybe even speak about it a bit on this weeks psutv episode, you know the fine fine fine…. well you get the idea.
Thanks so much Scott for everything you do in and out of NAPP
Ron
P.S. we need to get Matt to do another steam tutorial
In Matt K. tutorials on how to upload your submission he says that we are allowed to only upload one photo.
I am confused because here in this article by Brad Moore on July 14th, 2009 at 5:28 pm (http://worldwidephotowalk.com/blog/2009/07/14/updates-announcements-tips-etc/#more-434) he says to upload two images.
Please clear this up for everyone because people are already submitting 2 photos and the deadline will come quickly.
Thanks so much.
Daniel
You’re only allowed 2. Walk leaders will just delete any after the 2 and arent putting any effort into which they delete. So, i’d recommend -you- choose for them by only having 2.
Your leader will have the pic set before his deadline. That’s why we have great walk leaders present. I wouldnt worry about that. i’d focus on getting the best 2 images you think are possible.
Insofar as Photoshop? You can use whatever tool you have at your disposal to make the image the best image to win. If you think stiching multiple images will do that, then feel free to do so. So long as its just two.
Me personally, as a walk leader – if I see a multi shot image come up in my city, I’m going to hit delete as FAST as I humanly can. To me, if you cant tell me what you want to say, I dont want to see it – harsh huh..
So, if I’m doing that.. you should expect others to think similarly.
Good luck!
RC
Scott,
Thank you for setting this up! I think the best part was actually hangin’ with my friends and my bro’. With work and my family I rarely find time to meet with them (I only get to see my best friend about 4 times a year!). So I may or may not have gotten any good shots, but I can say that I had a great time and that it will be something I will remember for a long time. Thank you again!
Kindest regards,
John
That was HUGE fun!! Thanks for organising it
Hey Scott,
Thanks so much for putting together this worldwide event that brings so many of us photographers together for something we are so passionate about. It was fund and I’m looking forward to next year.
-Sincerely,
Mike
Thanks for putting this together Scott. I had a lot of fun. After participating, I understand why you scrutinize potential photo walk leaders. A good leader won’t necessarily make the walk a success but I can see how a bad one could really torpedo it. Anyway, thanks again, let’s get the 2010 date on the calendar ASAP!
Regards,
Wade
Thank you so much for making this an annual event! The Baltimore Walk was alot of fun – check out our group picture – http://www.flickr.com/photos/staciephoto/3733633644/in/pool-scott-kelbys-worldwide-photowalk-baltimore.
Looking forward to 2010!
I got to be a Photowalk subject! I ran into Craig Mohr (my first Photoshop teacher, years ago) and his walk on Santa Monica Pier. Hiis Walkers took lots of photos of my dogs and whatever cute kids happened by. It was great fun to be on the other end of all those lenses.
Scott, thanks so much for organizing such a great event! Our little town of Blue Ridge, Georgia had 50 photographers roaming the streets taking amazingly creative shots and enjoying each others company. It created quite a stir in the community and everyone was incredibly supportive. Being a part of such a huge event was a terrific experience.
Like everyone above, Scott I want to thank you for putting this together. I did the Cleveland Industrial Flats walk and The Walk, Leaders and other photographers were great. My wife did not register – but I talked her into coming the day before… She had maybe the best time of everyone there and informed me on the ride home, “I now have an official hobby!” (I’ll have to upgrade her camera) haha
Thanks Scott for such a great time. I did the Sarasota, FL walk and had a ball. Not only do I want to do another walk next year, I want to see our camera club do a monthly walk with various venues. We did a couple but until someone tries it – they have no idea how much fun it can be.

(Mo2vated)
I was unable to participate this year, but I am so hoping to be a part of number 3.
We walked in Boothbay Harbor,Maine, but it poured early and we even had thunder and lightening before the walk started which put a ‘damper’ on some walkers. Only 3 showed up!! Still it was fun and I think we all got a few shots worth keeping. Visit my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/cokids/photowalk. I’m sure there’ll be more shots shared, but I don’t have them yet.
Beth
Great time again here in Prescott AZ. I can’t believe how many folks came out in the summer heat for a walk with other photographers. This event amazes me.
Like you, I took very few photos. More visiting with other walkers, answering questions, etc. Looking forward to seeing their results!
We’re posting at http://www.flickr.com/groups/azphotowalk/
Thanks again from Albany NY. We had a great day, tons of fun, great people. Bigger and better next year!
Hi Scott, just a short note for being the organiser of this. I led the London Southbank Photowalk and had an amazing turn out for the day – 35ish people started, a couple arrived late and even after the break 20 people stayed on for twilight. Group shot for the second half is here: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/london–uk—the-south-bank-of-the-river-thames-en-uk/?attachment_id=53
Dave
Hey Scott,
Despite the bad weather for Galway on the day, we still had enough of a turnout that they all want to do it again.
I’ll certainly be up for leading again next year, but with the addition of ideas from other photo walks this year. It really was good for a mix of getting out there shooting and meeting other photographers. There is a camera club here, but they’re not active in the going out as a group sense, so a photo walk is the perfect compliment.
As with others, I set up a Flickr group to show our rather wet photos
http://www.flickr.com/groups/galwayphotowalk
I went with shooting on the G9 for the day, leaving my 5DII in the bag.
Thanks again,
Sean
Hey Scott,
It was a real pleasure to participate in this fantastic Event, even if the only time it rained in Quebec city in the whole weekend was the time our photowalk was taking place (and it was raining cats and dogs). Still, almost everyone who had signed up showed up and participated in the photowalk! It was a blast! Thank you so much for this incredible event!
Hello, Scott…..
I have been unable to join the Photowalk last year or this year due to long-planned family vacations (which required at least 6 months advance reservations). Would it be possible for you to announce the date of the 2010 Walk early (like, this year), thereby facilitating vacation planning? I don’t want to miss another, and I’m sure others are in the same boat.
Thanks for all you do….
Hey Scott,
Our Oklahoma City walk was complete awsomeness. Robert Trawick made us all feel like a million. He even got some models to be strategically placed along the route. Good for the models, photographers, and portfolios for each. I’m sure all leaders were very good, but I want to extend an extra waytogo to Robert and his sincere love for photography and making us all feel welcome.
Thanks,
Mike
Next year is on as far as I’m concerned
Scott,
Thanks for setting up this second World Wide Photo Walk! The Cincinnati group had perfect weather for the walk. The temperature was only 72 degrees. For a Saturday in July, what more could you ask for?
The walk went well. This was my second one and I brought my son to share in it all. He was pleasantly surprised by the whole event and really got into it. It was fun for me as a dad to see what he would find interesting to shoot. I think he got better shots than I did too! I know we’ll be back.
David Ziser set up another good route in our area called Mt. Adams and finished at a good restaurant too! David went out of his way to ask the restaurant to open for lunch, just for us. That was the icing on the wedding cake;-) His wife, LaDawn, helped out with keeping us moving along or we would still be out there. They made the walk!
I’m like you, I took a few lame shots and did more visiting. Thanks again for the opportunity! Now I have to sort through shots to find a couple to enter.
Larry
Great weather for us this year! Low humidity and 85° in late July in Alabama??? Couldn’t have been better! We had a great group of participants and I look forward to seeing their photos. Thanks Scott!
Scott, thank you so much for doing this again this year. The photographers in Salt Lake City had a great time, and we had a HUGE turnout! Looking forward to next year.
Here’s the group shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicolesy/3732434465/
You could probably get people signing up right now – so many walkers asked if “I’d be doing this next year” of course I’d be honoured to lead another walk – but I told them the decision was up to you “Head office” down in Florida.
Well Scott,
As usual, your “lame” shots look better than my “competition” shots. Oh well, it was still a lot of fun.
Cheers,
Karl-Franz
Congratulations on a huge success, Scott.
I led the Southwestern UK Photowalk. We had storms all week and it was wet and windy for the walk itself, numbers were pretty thin as a result! That is except for two last minute additions who signed up the night before – my fiance and our dog! She’s never picked up a dSLR before and I lent her my old d200 for the afternoon with a 24-85mm and jammed it into P (first time i’ve found a use for P!). That was the first time we’d ever taken photographs together and she really enjoyed it which is just awesome. BIG thumbs up!
Looking forward to next year,
Cheers,
Matt
Thanks for doing this again, Scott! I participated last year too, and really appreciate Laurie Excell as a photowalk leader. Generous with her time and her advice. Can’t wait for 2010!
Rachel
It was awesome Scott! I have got to get my stuff together 2010 I am going to apply to lead one of these walks! Really a great time here in Philly! Thanks for organizing it man!
N.
Scott,
I can’t believe you put those photos out there, I would be embarrassed too. LOL Great shots.
Count me in!! I will echo what @RachelH said about Laurie Excell. Her walk was so awesome that I hear that those that went on Scott Bourne’s walk are posting on OUR site!!! ; )
It was a wonderful time. I was originally scheduled to attend and then had to back out due to tendon surgery on my foot. The day before I thought to myself “Self? I think you could do this from your wheelchair!!”
So, I showed up thinking at least I can stalk from a distance and catch a “contact high”. I was immediately beckoned by those standing on the corner to come on and join them in awaiting the arrival of Laurie.
There were the quick “Hey! what happened to your foot” questions and then it was all about photography, cameras, etc. Laurie arrived and greeted us all with a smile that it was a good thing that we were outside and had sunglasses on. It was wide and bright!!
We promptly got ready for our group photo and I had a plethora of people offering to help me through the gravel to get to our spot. It took awhile to get everyone situated and I was glad that I was sitting down. : )
I thought that it would be the last time that I would see any of them, that they would be charging off leaving me in their digital dust. No so. I met some of the nicest people to ever carry a Nikon. That is saying quite a lot since I was one of the only people carrying a Canon!!
When we got to our lunch pub I looked over everyone’s photos and thought, “I was right with them. How could I have missed seeing that?” It was so great to see what you had just witnessed through different eyes.
This year was a photoroll, next year it’s a photowalk!!
Scott,
Again what an amazing event, and I was honored to be such a small part of it. I will echo what many are already saying here, that we were all in the same spot looking at the same thing, but we all have different vision. I had to blog about it here:
http://frankwisephotography.blogspot.com/
After the official walk ended, many of us hadn’t had enough, and continued on. For 9 hours. In 100 degree weather. And not 1 complaint, we all had a blast, layghed, talked, shot, and repeated. An amazing day.
Thank you again, and see you again next year for the official walk. But we here in Los Angeles decided that we would make this a Bi-Monthly event.
Frank
Hey Scott,
Can we use your Photo Walk Logo on some of our images? I’m thinking that I’d like to do some gallery style prints using that logo as part of the image.
Thanks!
Dave
DITTO Scott!
Another fabulous success!! I was on the Chicago-Michigan Avenue walk for the second year with our great leader Dan Ablan. Fun had by all!
Also, we had a “mini-photowalk” within the main walk; a total of 7 family members joined in for this years walk….what a blast!!!
Another idea….I bought one of the t-shirts for the event which dontated $5 to the Springs of Hope orphanage. Hmmmmm…..started thinking…what if everyone bought a shirt next year? Let’s see….simple math….32,000×5=$160,000 for some charity! You can really turn this into a powerful event with far reaching goodness! Something to think about for next year.
My hat off to you and your team for putting this on.
Cheers….
Todd in Chicago
Salud! from the land of Tequila and Mariachi!
I had the opportunity to lead once again the Guadalajara-MX photowalk, what an amazing event, our city walk was a blast!
Thank you Scott. I’m proud to be part of this piece of photographic history.
Here’s the group shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/benolivares/3734958505/
I SO wanted to do one…in fact, I had one of the ones in Washington all picked out for my daughter and I to do together…but schedules changed, and we had to be gone last weekend…
Next time, though, for sure! Glad everyone had a great time.
Mike
I was very disappointed that I had to miss the walk this year but my wife’s cousin’s daughter was getting married (I know that sounds distant, but we are pretty close to her cousins). so I go to the wedding thinking that I won’t get much more than some shots i can send them, and it turns out the Groom is the videographer for Clay Blackmore, and Clay is there shooting the wedding at 1:00, and all through the day up to the recption at 5:00, and then the entire reception until 10:00. It was so great to see a pro wedding photographer and his crew in action, how he set up shots, and what he was looking for. We spent some time talking, and he was so gracious. He was over six hours from home, and made it a very special day for all.
So even when you think you might miss opportunities, new opportunites open up.
Bill Bogle, Jr.
This turned out to be a pretty nice event for me. I could’ve gone to Orlando, but decided to join the group in Mt. Dora, FL. Yes, it was hot & muggy, but we got a few cool breezes and made use of the shade. Our leader (Stephen Berger) was friendly and engaging. I got a chance to meet and talk with some nice folks. Out of all the shots I took, I think I only have one or two that I really like. That’s OK, though. It was fun for the social interaction, and it’s always good to let your creative eye have some practice.
My only regret is that I sold my DX gear and my 18-200 lens a few weeks before this event. A mid-day photowalk doesn’t really need fast (and heavy) glass when I’m mostly shooting at f/11. Live and learn, I suppose.
I dont think I’ve ever seen so many photographers at one table. Its awesome to witness
The Binghamton, NY walk was featured on our local news – here is the link http://www.wbng.com/news/local/51106952.html
and scott is the embed HTML for it
the HTML didn’t show up in the comment if you want the embed HTML just email me at matt@matthewcard.com
Congratulations on a huge success, Scott. – It was an awsome event here in Binghamton,NY and Vestal, NY
Scott,
I had a blast. My first Photo Walk and I will be there next year. Like you, I didn’t get many images because I was more interested in talking with the folks in our group. Thanks for all of the hard work that you and your staff put in to planning this walk.
Ron
