Photo Walk Stuff (and a quick Q&A)
Hi gang: The dust is finally starting to settle from this week’s walk, and amazing images are being submitting to our contest, and on our flickr groups (see yesterday’s post for info on our flickr groups for walkers) Note: The image above is from the Gainesville, Florida walk, led by the wonderful Laurel Housden.
First, a quick little video from my walk in Ybor City, Florida:
Now, onto a quick Photo Walk Q&A:
Q. Will we be able to see the contest images for each city?
A. We just got that feature up and running! You can now go the World Wide Photo Walk site, click on the Cities link up top, choose the city you want to look at, and the uploaded contest photos from that city will appear at the bottom of that page (click on the Thumbnails to see larger images).
Q. When’s the deadline to upload our images for the contest?
A. It’s July 25th at midnight EDT.
Q. Can we really just enter two photos in the contest?
A. Yup. Really.
Q. But I can’t narrow it down to just two.
A. That’s not a question, that’s a statement.
Q. OK, “What if I can’t narrow it down to two?”
A. You must. It’s your destiny.
Q. Do I have to enter the contest?
A. Absolutely not—you don’t have to enter—it’s totally optional, and just for fun, so if you don’t want to enter, don’t upload photos to the World Wide Photo Walk city page—just do the flickr group thing instead. Also, if you think at any time you might whine about who your leader picked as the winner, don’t enter. We have a strict no-whining policy.
Q. Will photos uploaded to the flickr group be entered in the contest?
A. Nope. The flickr groups are just there so you can see what everybody else shot in your city, and around the world.
Q. When will the Grand Prize winners be announced?
A. On August 17th.
Q. Will I win?
A. Probably not.
Q. When can we vote for the People’s Choice Award?
A. As soon as we get that ready to go. Keep an eye on the World Wide Photo Walk site for details.
Q. Do you care if we use Photoshop or something else to edit and otherwise beautify our photos?
A. Not at all. Beautify away.
Q. Who is going to choose the 10 Finalists and Grand Prize winner?
A. Me
Q. Looking at your own portfolio, Scott, you seem to favor Landscape photos and Sports shots, and people shots, and Bridal shots, and commercial shots, and urban/city shots, and stuff like that. Would turning in one of those type of shots increase my chances of winning?
A. No. What will increase your chances of winning will be turning in the very best photo of all the photos entered.
Q. Last year’s winner had a bird it in. Will you be choosing another shot with a bird in it this year?
A. Yes.
Q. Really?
A. I have no idea. I’ll look at all the local walk winners from around the world, then I’ll narrow it down to 11 finalists. My favorite one of those 11 will be the Grand Prize winner.
Q. That doesn’t seem like a very fair way to choose a winner.
A. It does to me.
Q. But that makes it just your opinion?
A. Hey. you’re right.
Q. But what if I disagree with your choice?
A. You can petition the Rules Committee.
Q. Is there a Rules Committee?
A. No.
Q. But not everyone will agree with your choices, right?
A. Not everyone agrees with anyone’s choices on anything, but I’m pretty sure I know at least 11 people who won’t complain one bit with my choices.
Q. I’m not sure I like this.
A. Then don’t enter.
Q. You’re serious, aren’t you?
A. Absolutely.
Q. You’re mean.
A. My daughter tells me that when I put her in ‘Time Out,” so this isn’t the first time I’ve heard that.
Q. Should I just enter the contest, let the chips fall where they may, and just have fun with the whole thing?
A. That’s what I would do. I’ve entered contests before, and didn’t win, and yet I’ve gone on to live a productive and happy life.
Q. OK, thanks for letting me get all that off my chest. Ya know, when it comes down to contests, people tend to get all crazy and everything, and their emotions sometimes get the best of them. Sorry I was so harsh before.
A. No worries. At the end of the day, I’ll be as fair and objective as I can. I take this stuff seriously so you don’t have to. Remember, this whole thing is supposed to be fun, so just let it be just that. The Photo Walk wasn’t about the prizes; it was about making new friends, and enjoying being together while we make photos—something we all love doing—and that’s exactly what happened, all over the world, at once.
Q. You’re absolutely right.
A. That’s something I rarely hear. Thanks!

Hilarious (Self) Q&A
LOL Funny, very funny (and I agree with all the things you said)
ok so you answered many questions. but one question on a serious note is..
What if people from the walk i attended have submitted more than the 2 images we are only allowed and they get picked by the leader as having the best photo of that walk?
Hey Scott,
A couple of questions;
1. The weather was awful in England this weekend will this be taken into account when you are judging?
2. I’m not as good a photographer as some of the post on here so will there be a special category for out of focus badly composed shots?
3. I didn’t even attend a photowalk on Saturday, am I still allowed to enter?
Have a great day
haha… what a funny post… i wish i entered…. maybe next year…
i hope people didn’t actually ask you these questions…
What is a preferable size, quality, color space etc. for those two photographs?
What is the maximum resolution we can upload?
Hi Willie:
I’ll check with Brad. Same thing on David’s post above, and let you know here later today.
-Scott
I believe the upload on the site limits to 1MB
Any news on this? My main concern is that the photos I uploaded were cropped into a square.
hey Scott,
I found it!
so did you get the info from Brad?
we are all uploading for the contest and would love this info asap.
LOL! Thanks, a good laugh was just what I needed!
Hey Scott,
Thanks for giving me a good belly laugh first thing in the morning.
The list looks like the guy asking & answering himself.
“The man who talks to himself is surely speaking so someone with a sane mind.”
See ya,
Mike
What a great post to read first thing in the morning. I can’t quit laughing!
Scott, I had a fabulous time on the walk on Saturday. Thank you for organizing it.
You are too funny!!! Thanks.
Hey Scott: Very funny post, it reads like a stand up comedy routine. Thank you and to all that help for organizing the worldwide photowalk. Also for the free month of Kelby Training, great idea. Claire
boy that was blunt?
“Will I win?”….. “Probably not.”
Then again chances of winning the grand prize are 1 is to 64,000.
hmmm, I think I’ll buy a lotto ticket
Actually the odds are 2 in 64,000 which is really 1 out of 32,000. But if you really want to get technical, then you must win your local walk before going against the other local winners. That means 2 out of 100 (1/50) multiplied by 1 out of 900 which equals 1 out of 45,000. So, you are still less then your original estimate of 1/64k. Oops, is my nerd showing? Great post Scott. I hope I am that one in 45k.
Scott, that a great! HAHA.
On a serious note, I have the same question as others did about image size/resolution. I uploaded all my phtos (well the good ones) and then I’ve been looking at them and deleteing the ones just don’t feel are up to par but I noticed that some have been cropped and it’s cut off parts of my image.
You are too funny! I’m going to enter two photos even though I’ll probably not win:)
You crack me up Scott… Though it’s a little sad that most if not all of these questions would have come up had you not posted them….
You have developed a gift for Q&A-ing away the whiners in advance.
I did find myself looking at the sky between building searching for an large bird, but the best I got was a helicopter. Not impressive.
We need more Q&As.
They’re just too funny. Maybe a bi-monthly Q&A session with Scott. Qs and As all written and responded to by Scott……
Thanks for all the updates on the photo walk. You’ve answered a ton of the questions that I’ve been getting in e-mail, so hopefully all the walkers here will stop by and give you a read.
That was good for an early morning chuckle
I do have a question though, if the file size is limited to 1mb each, aren’t panoramic shots going to be too small to be accurately viewed?
I loooooooove these Q&As. But whiners will still whine. Oh, well!
Scott, we still have one more question that current subscribers to Kelby Training really want to know:
Q: Are current, faithful, loyal subscribers to Kelby Training able to use the code you gave us for a free month of training. What we really want to know is if we use our code will we be saving $17.95 next month.
A: What I’ve learned is that there sure are a lot of Kelby Training subscribers who are cheapskates.
However to answer the question that’s burning in all of my financially pinched subscribers hearts…
yes. just go to keby training, go to checkout, and input the code that you get off the photo walk. Once you complete checkout process your subscription will be extended by one month.
worked for mine.
I wonder who asked You these hard question
Anyway I was part of downtown Tampa group and I want to give a credit to our young leader Brad Moore.Everything was well organized and we had great ending in Museum of Photography(free pizza included).I was surprised how many interesting photo-ops are in downtown.I think when you walk with camera world around you suddenly look more interesting. Thanks so lot for making last Saturday memorable!
Great Q & A. I just wish I could do this with some customers!
classic “Scott Kelby answers”! love it!
Thanks for telling it like it is….in a funny…but serious….way. Your skin must be the thickest in the world! I cringe at some of the stuff that’s posted here. You are just a super cool dude!
Well said. Great ‘Interview’. Now, you’re going to pick my photo, right?
Scott, where’d you go? You were… uh, right there just a moment ago… Scott, Scott, Hey Scott… its really good… Scott… Oh Scott…
Thanks Scott that was the perfect start to the day.
What’s this about a bird? The photo have to have a bird in it?
” Q. Last year’s winner had a bird it in. Will you be choosing another shot with a bird in it this year?
A. Yes. “
He’s joking. Last years winner had a bird in it so Scott was demonstrating some of the ridiculous questions he gets. It’s sarcasm. You do not need a bid in your shot. Unless maybe Scott really likes birds… hmm…
How can I send you send our group shot from the Santa Monica Group? We are in front of the Camera Obscura in Palisades Park.
Thanks, Craig Mohr
Funny stuff. I can tell you that all the people on my walk seem to feel like winners already. I continue to be moved by the pure joy I saw on everyone’s faces. People were smiling, laughing, and getting to know each other. Those types of experiences aren’t for sale in this world. I plan to write a longer post about this because I just can’t stop thinking about how great the whole day was. Thanks to the folks at Kelby Media for sponsoring the idea. And prizes? Who knew there were prizes
Thanks for the great start to my day – I needed that laugh! I think you should have a “Top Ten” question/answer segment once a month.
Definitely your best self-interview yet!
Hilarious!
Scott,
Great post. I always enjoy your humor. Thanks for the free month of Kelby Training (I am a subscriber, great content presented well). I had a wonderful time on my photowalk in Cincinnati with David Ziser. The prizes had nothing to do with my joining a walk this year. Thank you for organizing this and lets do again next year!
Hahahaha….Scott, do you have that kind of inner monologue going on inside your head all the time?!
Thanks,
Thomas
Great Q&A, Scott! Now, my question…do you really hear that many voices in your head?
Sorry, just had to ask…. {grin}
Q. Will I win?
A. Probably not.
Priceless…
Thanks for another great year of Photo Walking, Scott. 3 cities down, 47 billion to go. You’re going to start working on the 3rd Annual as of Aug 18, right? ;^)
I led the walk here in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. What I was wondering is how folk that didn’t offically register can upload their pictures to the offical site? As this is restriced to two images per user then I can’t upload the images on anyone’s behalf. Can anyone help?
Thanks Scott to you and your team for hosting the event. This was Shetland’s first participation in the event and, based on the feedback I received, I’ll definitely be signing up again next year.
I’d also like to add that my photo walk was postponed due to terrible weather here in the very north of Scotland! As a result, I rescheduled to Monday evening. I had one cancellation from the original walk; however, he then made the rearranged date. Unfortunately I deleted his registration upon being informed of his inability to make the walk. I really need to get him signed up and registered again so that he can upload images.
Ben, If I understand things correctly… If they are not registered then they cant upload to the site. However, you can create a Flickr group (its free) and anyone you choose to allow into that group can upload photos there. Our town, Burnsville NC US, has set one up already. I will be uploading a top 10 list of my photos there. This will give us a chance to view more than the top 2 from everyone.
Thanks Alicia, I am just a bit disappointed for those that were not officially signed up and won’t be in contention to win the local prize. Despite many reminders by myself, some participants didn’t get round to signing up prior to the walk. In hindsight I should have registered on their behalf.
Note to self: Photoshop a bird into the photowalk submissions…
Great Q&A, I think better to read as I pray for the work day to end…
Hey, here’s a link to our group photo from the Fairhope, AL location:
http://wat23.com/wwpw_group.jpg
Thanks Scott! Had a great time. Realized there may be some creative juices still lingering somewhere inside (deep)! Looking forward to next year. I do not envy the selection(selectors) process! have fun!
Absolutely love the Q&A’s!

(Boston)
For gods sake, Scotty, thanks for beaming me up! I really wanted to do nothing but shots with birds in them, but then I remembered Moose’s blog about getting a new lens coating…icky!?!
But deep down, I was thinking…where can I hire a few good birds that will fly where I want them, on command!? I could hear Yoda chuckling, “smart you are”! Yeah…that’s the ticket.
Long story, short…it just didn’t fly. And boy am I glad since you won’t be picking a bird pic anyhow. Whew!! Dodged that one.
Just loved your Q&A!

(San Diego)
I have a technical question. I convert many of my photos to what I consider art with photoshop. Will this type of photo be seriously considered in the competition, or should I stick with just a photo? When converting to art, I only take out any distracting items such as electric lines, etc. just the same as I do my photos. There have been no major alterations to the photo itself.
SK likes birds????!!!! ZOMG I tossed the ones with the bird in the bin! *goes to pull them back out*
Whew! – HERE they are!
LOL
Scott, that was a totally awesome Q&A. I’m still grinning. Thanks for driving the point home in a fun way.
Hi Scott,
Not sure if anyone else has suggested this already but how about putting a selection of the best photos from the competition and/or the flickr group into a book? Proceeds could go to your charity. Could be a great memento for those of us who took part in the day (even if our photos are not included).
Rich
Scott – or anyone else who knows the answer:
I led the photo walk in Peoria, IL – 46 hearty souls who had a great time. Two of which want to submit pictures of people they encountered on the walk. No model releases of course. Let’ just say they submit them – and I pick them as the winning local image. Any issues with the lack of model release?
Thanks – we had a great time.
“Q. Will I win?
A. Probably not.”
That’s really funny text! I like that!
