My Book, “The Digital Photography Book, Vol. 3″ is in Stock at Amazon.com
I just took a look, and sure enough, it’s there (early)—my new book, “The Digital Photography Book, Vol. 3″ is in stock at Amazon.com (well, at least it was last night when I wrote this). Plus, it’s only $16.50. (Cheap!) >> Update: it’s now only $14.99!
If you want to see what the book is all about, I did a video about what’s in this volume (which is all new, from the ground up), over at the World Wide Photo Walk site (here’s the link; watch the video on the home page called “A Message From Scott.”).
I got my first copy late last week, and I was really excited. A big thanks to my amazing in-house production staff (including my in-house Editor Kim Doty to whom the book is dedicated); a hugh high-five to my awesome assistant and digital tech Brad Moore who helped with so many of the production and product shots, and thanks to everyone at Peachpit Press, including Ted Waitt, Scott Cowlin, Sara Jane Todd, and Nancy Ruenzel.

Even if I don’t win my city’s photowalk contest (which I certainly tried my hardest to do!) I fully intend to buy this book. The first two taught me so much! Thanks!
Same here! I don’t expect to win anything, but with my luck if I bought it first I’d end up winning a copy, too!
Amazon emailed me the other day with estimated ship dates at 7/27 and again tonight indicating it had indeed shipped. Looking forward to it. Its all good…
Excellent! I can’t wait to read this one – probably in one go.
Great news!
I ordered immediately, the first two volumes were a very pleasant and informative read.
Ordered- and got it for $14.99! Guess I twisted their arm-
Have to wait another MONTH before Amazon.co.uk will ship
Tony
it’s $14.90 now! just ordered my copy
Hey Scott,
Ordered my copy a week or so ago from Kelby Training. Can’t wait to get it.
See ya,
Mike
FedEx is delivering my book from Peachpit Press TODAY!!!! Wahoo!!!!
Great! But not great for me! I am a missionary in Russia and to get it shipped here takes a long time and is costly…I have been looking at the other option of Kindle books (on my Ipod Touch)…and wondering what it is that drives books to go to Kindle version (is it number of people who show interest? If so, how many?) I see the other 2 volumes have Kindle versions, would love to get the text of the 3rd edition quicker through Kindle….but I may just have to wait a bit…. patience is a virtue!
Thanks so much for all that you do for us Scott…it is a blessing to see someone so willingly give of their talents and to help others in their photography….your blogs and books have been a huge help to me in my venture in photography (at the amateur level)….
Looking forward to see the 3rd edition, whenever I get my hands on it

I live in Cyprus and I have purchased all my Scott books at http://www.bookdepository.co.uk All books are sent free post all round the world so give them a try. By the way I do not work for them or get commision (see I talking Scott talk now).
Can anyone out there answer me this, I’m having problems getting the Down and Dirty first and CS3 editions, are they being reprinted?
Scott, I can’t wait to get your book the end of this month. You are my inspiration! I want to add something and not sure if this is the right place. I participated for the first time in the national photo walk. I enjoyed it so much so that we are all hoping to go on another walk with our group. I do want to suggest that maybe the next one can be done in a photo book format? I think it would make a great coffee table book put together by you with the world wide photos in it. You know like ” A day in the life of the world wide photo walk” etc. What do you think about this?
Hey Scott can’t wait for the new book. Any idea when it will be released for the Kindle?
Thanks
-Scott
I’ve really enjoyed the first two! I gave the first one to a cousin and the second needs retirement from extensive use. So I just ordered the whole set on Amazon! Thanks for writing such great books Scott!
Hey Scott,
Like I said above, I can’t wait for my 3rd book. Is there any way that those of us who bought all 3 books as they came out could buy a sleeve for them?
Thanks,
Mike
As a matter of fact, there is! >> http://www.kelbytraining.com/product/scott-kelbys-digital-photography-library-slipcase.html
Thanks, Got the sleeve ordered and since the book wasn’t shipped yet, Kelby Training will ship the 3rd book and the sleeve together. Saves me money, and makes me appreciate NAPP, Kelby Training, Scott Kelby, and everyone of his accociates that much more.
YOU GUYS ROCK, SEE YA IN 63 DAYS FOR A PRE-CON AND THEN PSW…Can’t wait!!!!
Mike
One more thing. I really enjoyed the Photowalk here in Oklahoma City. Richard Trawick is one heck of a walk leader.
Hi Scott, I just noticed that on the WorldWidePhotowalk website, after I log in, the “Media” button is no longer available. Was this done to prevent folks from submitting photo’s after the deadline? No worries if that’s the case, I just wanted to go in and see what my fellow PhotoWalkers’ submitted for the contest (some of them may not have posted their entires on the group Flickr page).
Hey Scott – off topic of this post, but a question. I came across part of the MPix pro user agreement in another forum. Specifically this part –
You certify that you own all intellectual property rights in Your Content. You hereby grant Miller’s, our affiliates, and our partners a worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free, nonexclusive, sub licensable license to use, reproduce, create derivative works of, distribute, publicly perform, publicly display, transfer, transmit, distribute, and publish Your Content and subsequent versions of Your Content for the purposes of (i) displaying Your Content on our Site, (ii) distributing Your Content, either electronically or via other media, to users seeking to download or otherwise acquire it, and/or (iii) storing Your Content in a remote database accessible by end users, for a charge. Doesn’t this seem like a rights grab? It sounds as though they gain permission to use your images for stock purposes (…accessible to end users, for a charge). Any comments on this? This isn’t 100% normal is it?
Paul,
See the last few comments under Scott’s post about mpixpro:

The wording has been changed.
Awesome Dave, thanks very much.
Scott, when your book’ll be translate for Polish photographers? Have you got information?
Scott,
Have you thought about spiral binding (like the special CS4 book) all three volumes together? that would be awesome as my vol 1 and 2 are rather dog-eared at this point… and please at least offer (even at a premium) spiral binding, makes working at a computer so much easier while referencing the books.
thanks,
Joe
Wow Scott… didn’t know you jammed to Britney Spears during shoots… LOL
Looking forward to reading this book, no doubt, but Amazon is balking on their pre-order price guarantee. So far, I’ve still been charged the higher amount.
Mr. Kelby,
when translated it Someone in German language?
I have the first two books (and many more of you).
I already have a lot of you learned. Thank you very much.
Greetings from Germany.
Going on a helicopter tour of Maui/Kauai in the month of August 2009. I can only take one lens, for safety reasons, for my Canon 5D Mark II. Which lens do you recommend? Any camera settings or filters do you recommend since both tours are during the 11am-1pm time frame.
Thanks for your help
Hi David,
I am just now able to use a 70-200mm f2.8 L IS lens. This is an excellent lens especially since you won’t be interested in any kind of macro from a helecopter. I would maybe take a polarizing filter with me since it’s in the middle of the day.
Hope this helps.
Mike
I did the Kauai helicopter tour in May. I would not recommend the 70-200, even with IS. The grandest part of the tour are the incredible vistas you see. These would be lost with a big zoom. Use a smaller one. I used my Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, which worked very well. Some other recommendations: read the helicopter photography primer at http://www.naturescapes.net/062004/ej0604.htm. If at all possible, go with the doorless helicopter–no worries about reflections. I wish I had used ISO 400 instead of 200. Even at 1/4000 of a second, the speed of the helicopter, combined with the wind grabbing the camera led to many blurred shots. I started with a polarizing filter, but quickly took it off because it cost me too much light. Kauai is mostly overcast, and there was little actual sun during the 60 minute trip. Try to get on the right side of the helicopter, since the tours go clockwise, and you want to be facing the Na Pali when you reach them.
Add the 1.4x or 2x extender if you need greater reach. You will lose an f-stop or 2, but these extenders are amazing. I have used them both on my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, with excellent results.
Congrats Mr. Kelby! Your previous volumes have put me on a path to changing my professional life. Much appreciated! I look forward to reading this volume. Oh, and Get McNally to write another book too!

I just bought volume 2 yesterday when I saw it at our local bookstore here in the Philippines. I cant wait for volume 3. Looks like a great book that I am having my two graphic artist read through it to sharpen their skills.
At the risk of sounding greedy, I don’t want to be…but I was curious as to what happened with this: http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2009/archives/4570
I was wondering the same.
Thanks,
Dwight
Good work on the book Scott, i just got my copy today and finished reading it another great book.
Contrary to what Scott says in Volume 3, Canon does not allow 5 shot automatic exposure bracketing. Only 3 shots can be done with AEB. Anything more than that requires manual changing of exposure. I wish Canon would fix this. Surely this could be done in firmware?
Scott:
Just got your book # 3. Love it.However on HDR your instructions on how to get a Canon (atleast 40 D) to take 5 shots is not workable. You ask that one should press the mode button but the camera has a mode selector but no button which can be pressed!!
Love to be able to take 5 AEB shots. Anything you can suggest?
Still waiting for my free copy (from scott) wink! wink! ; )
Just got my copy and it’s great!!
Also attended the worldwide photo walk. Submitted my two photos, but so far, our leader has not chosen a winner.
I’m reading Digital Photography Book 3-What a great book! I use Imagenomic’s noise reduction for most of my images and see that you recommend Nik Define in book 3. Do you find that one program works more efficiently for specific applications?
All three books are excellent resources and I take them with me on photo trips–Thanks for writing such great references!
Scott,
I want to thank you very much for another very well written book. I have all 3 volumes plus the CS3 and Lightroom 2 books, and am a member of both NAPP and Kelbytraining. I’m about halfway through Volume 3 and THANK YOU for the chapter on the truth about lenses. Thanks to the passion you guys have shown for your craft, you and McNally are costing me a fortune in new gear! But its all good and I’m very happy with my new (refurbished) D700.
One quick question if I may. I note that you endorse B&H Photo. Is there any functional difference in your view between them and Adorama? I know McNally endorses them. But I frankly didn’t have a great experience with them recently. I’m sure its just an isolated instance. But what do you think of B&H for lowbies like me who don’t often get the “pro” treatment?
Thanks again for your great books and training.

Hi Scott,
I just purchased this book from Amazon (UK) and read it uninterrupted last night, except for a 10 minute interval when my 14 month old son decided he wanted to be awake, rather than asleep!). I must say was a fab book it is too and follows volumes 1 & 2 perfectly. I’m just a beginner/amateur, so the chapters on studio work and sport photography are not so relevant to me….yet. The last chapter showing recipes for certain types of shot is probably the part I will read again & again and refer to when I need to. Any plans to release a book just crammed full of recipes? I would definitely buy it!
I remember that you were polling people for ideas of what they’d like to see in volume 3, but at that time I couldn’t think of anything. However now that time has passed how about a book dedicated to post-processing and workflows? I’m still getting myself in knots trying to find a suitable workflow from RAW to final image. Also, I’m on a tight budget and can’t afford expensive software like Photoshop, so would like some recommendations for ‘free’ or ‘cheap’ software I could use as an alternative. I’ve tried a trial of PhotoMatix Pro for HDR and very much like it, but are there any ‘free’ alternatives out there? All that sort of stuff.
Anyway, good with the books and I look forward to Volume 4 !!!
Regards
Darren
Scott,
Congrats on Volume 3! I hope there will be several more volumes in the future. The tips are fantastic and I love your sense of humor. The bit about the National Geographic photographer and the tripod in volume 1 still cracks me up when I think about it.
Just got Volume 3 delivered from Amazon! I’ve been printing out all these articles the last few weeks on how to do product shots. Haven’t really been satisfied with any of them. I should have known you would have a whole chapter devoted to it! Lot of great stuff I’m going to start using immediately!
Thanks

i am a chinese reader, i have The Digital Photography Book, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, i very like your style.
i want to know when will see the new book for chinese reader? thanks
Scott,
On page 185 there’s a small tabletop tripod. I can tell it’s a Manfrotto but which model and ballhead do you use on it?
OK. OK Scott. Enough is enough!! Having read your Lightroom 2 book which is truely excellent I decided I would buy all three of your Digital Photography books. So here I am working my way through book 1 when I find the first jibe at doctors. Then I get to chapter 10 and the entire intro is about rich docs. Give us a break!! Here in the UK we have the wonderful socialised medicine (better know as the Obama Plan – haha) which isn’t associated with the mega-salaries of your lot. Leave us poor docs alone and do us all a favour and lay into the bankers
PS Keep up the good work
I am fairly new with Photoshop. In fact, I am in my computer most of the time studying these videos I found. Your book will definitely be added in my library. Don’t you just learning?!
