How I Display My Prints
Since I ran that video clip about my Sports Shoot Contest, I’ve had dozens of requests about how I hang the prints seen behind me in my office (above), and I actually did a little blurb about them already (they’re from IKEA, and they’re called “Klang.” If I remember correctly, which I seldom do, they’re around $14).
But I’m still getting lots of questions, and here’s why:
- You can only get them (Klang) at a physical IKEA store (they’re not available online from IKEA.com)
- Without seeing what a “Klang” actually looks like (my prints cover them up), it’s hard know what you’re looking for if do you go to the store.
Luckily, Matt had one still in its wrapper, leaning against a wall in his office, so I borrowed it for the photo you see above (Note: I know you want the caption to read, “That’s me holding Matt’s Klang” but it’s not gonna happen). Photo by RC.
In that photo, you can see what Klang looks like, and behind me you can see how I’m using three of them. This is different than it’s used in the store, where it’s used as a ledge or shelf with a raised front edge. This is how Matt uses his Klang. (I know—that sounds bad, too).
Anyway, I hang mine higher up the wall, and then use clips to hold the prints in place. That way, I don’t have to mount or frame my prints, and I can swap new ones in/out quickly. Matt puts his lower on the wall, then mounts or frames his prints, and puts them on the ledge where they lean against the wall. Both styles work great—it’s just down to personal preference. Hope that helps.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr … hoped that I read ur blog before I went to IKEA store today … I got my living room from there today and I just finished assembling them an hour ago … but it’s ok … my next visit I’ll buy it and put it in my living room … very nice idea Scott … it looks better than Matt’s idea and cheaper (but don’t tell him) …
and as u said u can swap them very easily … thanx for the tip
best wishes
Ghassan
damn, I was in Ikea Saturday buying things to hang prints… didn’t see this.
You’re a funny guy! Matt’s Klang must be about 30 inches long, thats impressive!!! lol Thanks for sharing.
this profile looks exactly like a PVC profile from LEGRAND. So if you don’t have an IKEA store next to you maybe you have a hardware store so ask for PVC cable management pofile. The profiles are in all sizes.
hope this helps!
Alex
curious gadget … too bad there’s not an IKEA store in Missouri …. at least not according to the IKEA web presence … geesh!
But what I want to know is what kind of guitar you have in your office?
Not sure of the specifics, but I’m pretty sure it’s a Schecter Hellraiser. No clue which one though
Hi Scott,
I like them! Great idea.
Can you take a quick snap to show how they get mounted to the wall. Or ’splain, please. See you in Orlando at your workshop.
Best..
Michael
These look like the aluminum picture rails that you see occasionally. If so, you might be able to do something similar with rain gutter: http://duaneco.blogs.com/duanecoblogs/2007/01/index.html
Hey Scott:
Perhaps you might give consideration to someday doing an on-line demo about the correct way to mount prints. For example, do you dry mount them before matting? If not, how do you mat them – using acid-free tape, for example, to hold them inside the cover mount? I’ve never seen anyone go into this subject in any detail, and it might be appropriate to do so. Many thanks.
You might like to check the Walker Display Systems. Same basic concept but smaller and with a ton of options for framed prints and large (30×40) prints. I use a setup of them in my studio so I can reconfigure my portrait walls with only one set of holes at the top of the wall. Getting ready to put another ceiling suspended version in and maybe some for this brick area I have at the studio.
IKEA — FTW!
I love IKEA.
I went to IKEA yesterday and asked about these, and they claim they are no longer carried in metal, but now have a wooden option. The front ledge, though, is quite thick.
Very clever way of displaying prints (either way really…) I like the idea of putting work up without having to mat/frame it first – gives a chance for review before spending the big bucks! Always the innovator! Thanks Scott!
Hey Scott, Im gonna save you a trip to Ikea! Check these out at Ikea online
they are called RIBBA PICTURE LEDGE $14.99
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50152595
Actually if you search Ikea under “Pictures and Frames” You will find a bunch of them starting at $9.99 – $14.99 they come in Black and in White
As Scott mentioned, they don’t have them online, although they use to be. I also read somewhere that they were discontinued? Flashbacks to the IKEA Jerker desks which I own two of. Anyhow, here’s a search that offers some alternatives in case you can’t get into an IKEA to look first hand: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=picture+mount
Most of the results would probably be used as Scott describes how Matt uses his Klang
Sorry – See Joe P. has already posted about the RIBBA ledge.
In looking at the links posted, these are only available only and not for web orders. Which means a 2.5 hour trip. Argh! Anyone have any online retail stores that might have them?
Tom
IKEA also has a set up that uses two small wall mounts and a wire in-between. There are additional little clips that you can get to hold your photos to the wire. The set is called DIGNITET and is located in the curtain rod area (even though the description states that it is for photos and art). If you get this, don’t forget the screws as they are not part of the set.

Thanks Ken—This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!!!
My wife and I love IKEA. I dont ever remember seeing those but they look pretty sweet. I have been wanting to do some wall mounts for my Fighter Pics. This would be perfect
do the clips come with Klang? or do you buy them separate? if separate, what are they and where’d ya get them?
thanks!
loved the humor today
I LOVE Ikea and I love this solution for displaying prints. Thanks for the tip!
West Elm offers something similar in metal on its website since the IKEA ones are no longer.
Clips are binder clips that you can get in the office supply section of any store. Another display idea I’ve seen is to mount a decorative curtain rod to the wall and use the curtain rings with clips on the end to hang the pictures. Great to have display options that you can change out quickly.
Now can you tell us how to get one of those Gitzo caps?
Those Klang are EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for to to display my prints on my very blank wall without having to frame them all. Thank you!
That was just too funny! Thanks for the laugh. (And the picture of Matt’s Klang!)
can u plz email me ur photos.
Thanks,
Ray
Well, crap. Now I’ve gotta take a trip over to the new IKEA in Tampa. I am soo totally disappointed.
Great idea… thank you for sharing your Klang experience with us all.
Hi Scott,
Like you I found an Ikea solution for hanging my prints. I found these flat metal bars at Ikea (they are not in the online catalog) and use tiny magnets from the container store to hang up my prints. The magnets are gentle on the prints and make swapping pictures out easy. I have included some links below for examples of the setup and the magnets at The Container Store.
Cheers,
Edgar
p.s. Had a ball at the Worldwide Photowalk and even managed to be lucky enough to be selected as a winner of the Charleston, WV walk.

Are the prints mounted on anything? What keeps them from curling at the bottom two corners? Love the idea!!!
I love the hanging them up and swapping them out idea. I’ll have to pick me up some of those.
What an awesome tip. I’ll be just down the road from IKEA all weekend.
IKEA does not make these things any more! Save yourself a trip and learn from my boondoggle. In fact, several worker drones insisted that there never was such a thing despite me showing them Scott’s photo with “KLANG” clearly written in unmistakable IKEA font.
Nice set-up! Those are great
Scott,
Is that a mandolin or a guitar behind you? What do you play?
Alan
Sorry, i see that was asked, (and answered) already. Thanks!
Pretty nice idea !
Stephanie Barnard u looks awesome.
