Winning Entries From Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk Announced!
This was incredibly hard. Even harder than I thought.
Last year it was really tough coming up with my finalists and winner, but this year’s judging was more than just four times harder—not just because four times as many people participated—but because the sheer quality of the shots this year was just over the top.
There were so many amazing, intriguing, fascinating, and just fun shots, that it made going from nearly 900 shots down to 10 finalists and one winner incredibly challenging. But, instead of keeping you waiting; let’s get to the winners, and we’ll talk more in a moment.
First, the 10 finalists (who all win the following prizes):
OK, folks, here we go (listed in no particular order):
‘Newcastle Baths”
By Sam Wong (Newcastle, Australia)
The colors in this one just blew me away. I love the still water, the sky is amazing, and the location is eerie and beautiful at the same time. The leading lines in the photo work so wonderfully well, and while I’m not sure where it was taken, I’d love just to see it in person.
‘Purple Lady’ (above)
By Saz80 (London, England)
When I look at this image, I just want to know her story. She looks like she’s led a fascinating life, and has amazing stories to tell. I love the flower in her hair, the look on her face, and the wonderful lighting. I even love the coffee cup—it all adds to the story. The colors work so well together and the composition is spot on. The shot, and the subject, have an awful lot of character. I wish I had taken it.
By Frank Thys (Brussels, Belgium) above
This is one of those images that I fell in love with the first time I saw it. The overhead viewing perspective is just great, and the fact that you don’t see anyone else really makes it interesting to me. The shadows are great, the colors are great, the whole thing just works. Love it!
‘Vannlilje / Hot and Cold’ (above)
By Sevinove (Bergen, Norway)
This is as beautiful a flower shot as I’ve seen. There were a lot of flower shots entered in the competition but this one stands alone. The light is perfect. The water drops—fortuitous. And the composition—-on the money. Absolutely beautiful. The photographer should sell it as a poster.
‘Newspaper Light’ (above)
By Jeroen Idema (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
This is another one I liked instantly. Trying to lead the viewer to look where you want is always a challenge, but the the color (or lack thereof), and the strong leading lines really make the man on the bike stand out even though the brightest part of the photo (which usually draws the eye first) is behind him. Really nicely captured.
By Marcllus (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) above
I just flat out love this shot. The way the soccer (footballs/futballs) are all in the air at the same time, and nearly at the same height, under incredible light—the whole thing looks staged (but you know it wasn’t). Even the lens flare works in this image—the whole thing just works. You keep looking at it and looking at it (stop looking at the woman’s behind in the center—–this photo is not about that!). It’s about capturing a moment in fantastic light, which the photographer did brilliantly.
‘Pouting’ (above)
By Sudiruabdullah (Brunei)
For me, this one is about color and composition. I love how this one is composed—-drawing all your attention right to the subject, and you lose nothing because of her small size in relation to the overall image—her expression is crisp and clear, and her outfit is priceless. Nice subtle post-processing.
‘Path to Paradise’ (above)
By Rsuello (Cebu City, Philippines)
There is just something about the shot. Again, really strong composition, great color throughout, and the fact that you see just part of the subject, (which I love) made this one of my favorites. The juxtaposition of the elegant marble and the torn shorts and bare feet make you wonder what the story is (and who the subject is). Really nicely done.
‘Caught on Tape’
By Gtilute (Pittsburgh, PA, USA)
The s-curve leading down to the subject would almost make a great shot in a class on photo composition, but what I really love about this is the subject’s body position. At first glance, I thought it was the photographer (since he’s standing in front of a tripod), but if you look closer, he’s on a skateboard. That doesn’t take away from this wonderfully composed shot. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the person in the foreground on the left, but even with that, it was one of my very favorite shots right from the beginning. Great eye to capture this one.
On the Marina
By Son Papdi (Chennai, India)
I have no idea what this cart is doing by the edge of the ocean, and maybe that’s what I like about it (of course, besides the composition, color, and nice post processing). As I narrowed things down, this one just kept making the cut again and again, and well…here it is as a finalist. I really like it on every level.
And now….the Grand Prize Winner, who will win all of these incredible prizes:
And the winning image is:
‘Can’t stop smiling’
By Ajummumo (Amphawa, Thailand)
Her wonderful smile draws you in. So does the color. The composition. The story waiting to be told. The perspective. The sharpness of the image, and the warmth of it all, and how well all the different colors and shapes work together to create my very favorite image from the walk. I love it–love it—love it!!!!!!
Way to go Ajummumo, and a big congratulations on being the Grand Prize Winner for the 2nd Annual Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk!!!!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Tomorrow I’m posting a series of other images that, while they didn’t win a prize, are so good that I felt that needed special recognition. So check back tomorrow to see some other amazing shots from the World Wide Photo Walk.
A special thanks to all our sponsors for their gracious support and prizes; to our Walk Leaders who did such an outstanding job giving of their time and talents, and to the wonderful photographers from around the world who created such inspiring, creative, and beautiful work.

I see a book in the making, a collection of the finest images of the walk…
I’d definitely buy THAT book!
I would buy it too! Loved the images!
That would be an excellent book – depending on the included images (hint hint! LOL) I would buy one too! *grin*
In all seriousness, congrats to the winners – there is no doubt in my mind that these really are the best of the best! Kudos to everyone for the accolades, and thanks to Scott and everyone at NAPP for their help in getting this event going. Our local photowalk group has continued ever since the inaugural one last year and I’ve made some very good friends from it!
Last year I made a book of the best of Amsterdam
That was nice for all the walkers
So walkleaders there is a nice job to do

Gorgeous shots and congrats to all the winners!!! I just LOVE pics that pull you in and make you want to know more and these are all a feast for the eyes and imagination! Love them!
What a job you had picking them, Scott. I don’t know how you did it. And also want to thank you for the opportunity to be apart of this. It was a wonderful experience!
Very nice work. I was one of the nearly 900 people whose photo was judged and considered. I can see that I was in very fine company. It was a wonderful experience and I will see you all next year.
Wow, breathtaking images! I participated in the Ottawa, Canada walk and had a terrific time — even if you didn’t choose my work of art as a finalist. *grin* I think “Pouting” and “The Path to Paradise” are my favourites of the finalists.
Fantastic pics, so pleased with being involved with this – these are really in a world apart – thanks for the energy and contributions.
The winning image is fantastically awesome in every way. I had a terrific time on my own little Photowalk, connecting with other local photographers and I look forward to doing it all again next year! Congrats to all the winners!
Wow…wow…wow!
These are so absolutely incredible.
I agree with the suggestion there’s a book in there, somehwere!
Okay, I get the picture…. I can take a hint!!! It is obvious now why my photo was not chosen. It is obvious that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” : )
Man those are awesome!!! Mine is crap, nice but crap none the less, compared to any one of those. Wow!!
I think that you put each photo up on the wall, turn around and toss a dart. That is the only way that I can see to fairly choose the best one. They are ALL the best. NO, seriously, everyone of them. Did I mention that I my stuff is crap? : )
Congratulations to all, even those that were not chosen. What a wonderful time I had and will definitely be there again.
Next year in Jerusalem!
hey, Scott, thanks a lot!!! wohooo!!!
Congrats bai!!!
Your the best Master Ronald!
Everybody that took part in the Photowalk is a winner. Just to have the chance to get together with others who share an interest in photography made it a winner of a day. The photos are the icing on the cake. Well done, Scott. It’s only because of you that so many people had a chance to take part.
Congrats to the winner and the honorable mentions of the competition! These are really amazing shots!
Congratulations to all the winners and to the no winners too.
Great images and congratulations to the winners. Thanks to Scott & Co. for the Photowalk oppoortunity.
Please, please, please!!!!! can you make the next one for a 2 day event: Saturday OR sunday?? I’m a sabbath observer, and no matter what week of the year it is, can’t do it. I’ve also seen someone comment about being a wedding photographer and never being available on saturday.
Great pictures.
Fantastic images and choices. Congrats to all the winners, and thanks Scott for putting this together.
I’m very proud to see one of the pics of my walk show up here. The photographer is a really lovely guy and clearly is very talented as he produced many great shots.
Is that rope tied to that kid in a boat. I know what she’s saying: I’M ON A BOAT!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7yfISlGLNU
All of the photographs are wonderful. I definitely have to participate next year!
My favorites are the winning entry, the soccer game, and purple lady.
OFF-TOPIC
I am loving the 3D class on Kelby training! Please ask Corey to do more of them! By any chance is their a 3D book coming?
Debbi
Beautiful shots. I love that they’re truly worldwide. And I’m proud to have been but a small part of this remarkable venture. Good work, Scott, and good work all.

The next to last sentence on Scott’s comment puzzles me: Is there a person in the foreground on the left? Maybe I need new glasses!!!

It might be your monitor. I first viewed them on an uncalibrated laptop and had the same thought. Then, when I viewed them on my home system with a calibrated monitor, you can see the person in the lower left foreground. It’s probably not your eyes.
I’m glad you mentioned that. My wife and I were just saying the same thing.
Congrats to Gtilute! I wish I could put a face to the name from that day. It’s a proud day for Pittsburgh… A super bowl win, a Stanley Cup win and a WWPW finalist all in the same year. Who would da thunk it?

These photos are just stunning!
What a wonderful blog post. Such a treat to see such amazing photos.
I couldn’t help but notice that only one of the eleven photos was from the U.S. whereas I suspect that the majority of “Photo Walkers” hailed from the U.S.
Kind of makes me wonder (as an American) why this is the case? Certainly not implying that Scott has a bias for international artists – I know that isn’t the case. More wondering why our country and its people and compilations didn’t seem to provide the same quality “artistic canvas” that the rest of the world does. Just interesting to note I guess.
Hi Matthew:
I had no idea which shots where from which country when I viewed them. I purposely wasn’t able to see the entrant’s name, city or country—just the image so I could base it solely on that.
Hope that helps.
-Scott
Yes, given that you come off as a very even-handed person I assumed as much. Which sort of makes the outcome very interesting (at least to me but I am a nerd). I would guess a high percentge of your entries were from U.S. photo walks but over 90% of the winners were from a different continent altogether. Don’t get me wrong as I love the photos (my favorite country for vacation is Thailand so I loved the winning choice as it really captures the gentle nature of the Thai people) and personally prefer the types of photos you chose, I just thought it was an interesting result.
yes, I noticed the same “International theme” running through these selections (which I just love!). These shots are just amazing, shows me how far I have to go as a photographer…kudos to all the winners (and I am sure so many more — what a job to narrow down to these).
As far as the International flavor. Living overseas myself, if I look through my shots, more keepers are from overseas than in the States as well. The colors, the culture, the people, in other places are just so intriguing. Colors alone in most other countries, just come through. And the people’s faces just beg to tell a story. Maybe it is just the “common” factor for us raised in the North American culture…when we are encountered with the different colors, architecture, lines, faces, etc., we are just drawn to them.
Anyway…great job to all, and thanks Scott for sharing!
My daughter participated for the first time. We were so excited to know that she placed 1st in her group!!! I know I could not have judged these photos. All are truely AWESOME!! Congrats to the winner!!
I’ll be hones here. I’m not that impressed. The shot in Rio by Marcllus in undeniably the best shot out of this set. An image you cannot ignore, it hits you immediately and you remember it for a long time after.
Everything else is just… I don’t want to say boring but, unimpressive I suppose. I’m reading most as snapshots with long lenses of things that are moderately interesting. Throw in a couple wide angle shots with pretty light, voila, winners.
What I’m trying to say is basically. With 900 photographs to choose from. I should be stunned by each winning image. And I am not.
Hi Samuel:
I’d be happy to give you a critique of your images from the walk.
-Scott
I suggest next time do away with the photo contest and just do a book of top 100, that will save you (Scott) a lot of headaches.
Mike I think you’re on to something.
Scott this was my winning submission from the New York City Lower Manhattan walk.

This was my other submission.

And just because I can share. Everything within this set was captured on walk day.

Hey Scott
If you want to make a enemy have and share a opinion.
If you want 50% of the people to hate you, run for some type of office.
But if you really want 99% of the people to to think your a absolute idiot, and throw in the same amount of loath and hate.
Judge a photography contest.
Please count me in as one of the 1% who would like to thank both yourself and Jeff Revell for all your time and effort, for a whole bunch of people to get together, for only the the love of taking pictures.
Scott’s a big boy. I’m sure he can handle a little criticism. He has more than enough praise from this event and knows full well how important he is to the photography/photoshop community.
So at least in my case, it’s not meant to imply that I “loathe and hate” him. Merely, I’m disappointed in the final turnout, but love that this event existed in the first place.
wonderful photos; I’m sure it was tough to choose. I can’t decide which one I like best. thanks for a great day.
Great pictures!!!
Unfortunately I didn’t participate. I will never will, but it’s not about wining, it’s participating and meeting cool people.
Looking forward for the next one. Great job for everyone!!!
Great picks one and all Scott! Sorry to read the sour grapes comment above. I think most will agree, the images are good ones indeed.
Thanks for putting together another fun walk!
I scanned down the list and thought, yes, those are from really talented eyes–the kind of shots that I keep wishing I can take someday. Then I checked back and was delighted that so many came from countries where it is very difficult to get noticed, let alone get encouragement. I hope it inspires some of them to develop their talent. I suppose it might be very difficult to publish a five- or 10-shot portfolio from each of the winners so we can see the rest of their work?
Thanks for putting this World Wide Photowalk…Scott. I really enjoyed it. We had so much fun with our photography group. Hope to do this again next year. =)
Beautiful picks Scott! Congrats to all the winners! I hope to join a group next year..if there is even one in my town. But again gorgeous pictures!
So glad to know that the photo “Can’t stop smiling” get the grand prize! I will call ojummumo immediately to let her know she is the 2nd. Scott Kelby worldwide photo walk winner.

Wow Wow, from Thailand. Yeh, way to go
I love all of Scott’s choices. Great shots from a great photo walk!
Hi Scott,
I’m from Newcastle, Australia and am blown away that a photo from from our walk ["Newcastle Baths”] got into the top 10!. It mind boggling actually …
Newcastle is situated around 160km north of Sydney and is Australia’s 7th largest city. The Newcastle Ocean bars is a much loved spot for photographers from around the area [trust me; just search for "newcastle ocean pool" in flickr]. You mention “I’d love just to see it in person” – next time you’re in Australia email me and we’ll work something out
cheers,
Stewart
I was at that shoot with Stewart and Sam. I am stoked to know that a Newcastle photographer has made it on the world map in the Scott Kelby photo walk.
Well done Sam and well done the other winners including number 1!
As Stewart said, come to Newcastle we’ll show you around.
Fantastic! A great day, a great learning experience and cannot wait for next year.
Thanks Scott. You rock!!!
It is wonderful to know so many people around the world can see the beauty in it. Now we just need to expand our numbers.
Thanks Scott,…….Thanks Laurie
May your eyes never dim to the wonder.
Sonja
We all won by participating in this experience – a gift to us and greatly appreciated. Not to mention the free month of Kelby Training – this has really been a blast to watch (informative and hilarious, too) and I will be signing up in the future!
Hi Scott,
Is there a way for us to see the 900 shots? I want to appreciate more of these great shots by people all over the world!
Thanks so much for sharing…wish I could organize a walk in my town…is there a way I can do the walk next time even if not a part of an official “walk” and submit photos?
http://worldwidephotowalk.com/2009-photos/
Congratulations to all the winners! All the images were amazing and being part of the photowalk is a great journey itself. Thanks Scott for sharing your vision and the stories behind each winning photograph. Looking forward to next year’s Photowalk!
What the hell…it’s amazing!
Congratulations to all the winners. They were great and unique images. Thank you Scott and all the others involved, for organising such a successful event. I thoughly enjoyed participating.
Very nice shots indeed! I can’t help but notice that the shot form India has a dust spot mark on the right middle of the image… Quite obvious!!! Still a great image but not a pro finishing.
Nico
Sorry I meant left side ! Oupssss
To all participants and WINNERS congratulation..
Joining this world wide photowalk is blast for me meeting new friends and seeing the world differently is a good experience.. I would like to thank Scott and everybody that initiate this photowalk..
More shooting

Hi Scott,
I would like to congratulate all the winners! I didn’t win the photo contest but being part of the worldwide photowalk and being part of the history is something! Looking forward for next year’s Photowalk.
Scott, well done and what a great idea! I have been to both walks in Stockholm and have learned so much each time, not only about taking and finding the photo, but sorting, evaluating my own work, plus post processing (sometimes in too much of a hurry!); a big bonus is that I have met some great people that all have a common interest.
I feel that the competition is just a foot note on the event; and too bad some people seem only interested in the prizes; it was made very clear how you would pick the winners and I am slightly embarrassed that some people would question your picks… I mean it was your event, your name is up there at the top of the page!?
It was fun to see that you and I picked some of the same top images, and I look forward to the people’s choice. I suspect that many of your picks will do well here also. Particularly Brazil.
Catching candids of people like these led to some great photos, but I have a question… In use like this, are model releases necessary?
Hi Scott
It would be great if the results could be posted on the main PhotoWalk website. I know a lot of my walkers will be looking there – and I only discovered you’d posted the results here by accident.
Stephen
They were posted there at 12:01 pm yesterday. It’s that big ribbon at the top that says 2009 Winners!
-Scott
Wow … Great choices, beautiful photographs … glad YOU had to make the decisions and not me … lol … this was a wonderful experience, can’t wait until next year … sign me up!
