New Online Class from Joe McNally: “Photography with Just One Light”

If you’ve ever wanted to work lighter, faster, and more effectively lugging around less gear, don’t miss Joe McNally’s just released online class at Kelby Training Online on how to get studio-quality lighting on location with just one light.
Here’s the list of segments in the class (which is already getting rave reviews!!!!).

I watched it last night. Great video!
I watched it as well. I am curious. It is only one light? But his onboard flash (master) is firing as well in most of the scene’s. This is firing as well as the off carmera flash. This would make it two flash photography?
The on-camera flash he is using on the D3 is acting as a commander unit only (even though it looks like it is firing). Later, in one of the videos, he switches to a D700 to show there is no difference in using the built-in pop up flash as the commander unit.
So it really is one flash.
I’m not sure specifically how the Nikon wireless system works, but if it’s similar to the Sony/Minolta system, the on-camera flash fires before the exposure and send a coded signal to the off-camera flash. The on-camera flash therefore should not be part of the final image, so the final image is being lit only by the off-camera flash. I haven’t watched the class yet but I will soon, and I’d bet this is what’s going on.
3 cheers for Erin stepping up to model in the rainy woodland location segment!
Great class. My request would be to add a chapter when one is shooting without the assistance of a helper both in studio and on location.
It’s a great class, although the latter segments were more videos of Joe shooting vs. explaining how the lighting was setup. The title would be more accurate if it was “Shooting with one light and two assistants” !
What a fabulous class! But … I definitely agree: need an added segment on “Shooting One Light SOLO”!!
Sigh… I was trying to avoid this. But I just can’t pass up McNally’s classes. Yeah, yeah he’s brilliant and insightful, etc. Problem is, every time I read Scott or McNally’s books/classes/blogs etc, 3 things happen in short order:
1. My eyes glaze over in a trance-like, Pavlovian state
2. Amex and B&H/Adorama/Amazon do a happy dance as I submit my online order (mind you, I have no memory of the event)
3. My dear wife gives me the stank-eye as UPS knocks on the door with shiny new gear.
So once again unto the breach! Let us hope my marriage can survive my education!

Funny thing, I have the same problem!
and I thought I was alone on this… LOL
Same here too.
Like a 10 year dreading that ‘let me have a word with ya’ scenario. I have to sneak my toys into the house from the car when everyone is asleep. Immature but necessary
I think the class didnt quite go up to the same level as the other classes, i was expecting a bit more. Joe is a flash master and i just dont think that it was up to his usual level.
I hope there will be some more classes with Joe soon. Or some classes with some other photographers that you have in your line of people connected to Kelbytraining.
I, for myself, would like to see some more photoshoots with big flash, like the Elinchrom Ranger and alike.
Dont get me wrong, i like all the tutorials of image tuning and so on, but i would like to see some more photograping classes.
Why is this new news? This particular video has been available on Kelby Training since August 6th. Scott, you’re a little behind on your updates.
Sorry, misplaced my last comment as a reply. See above.
I’m a Kelby Training subscriber, and love these on-line tutorials. Thanks!
I’m curious to know though why only 3 or 4 segments of a much longer list of classes get uploaded? Joe’s latest class shows 18 segments, yet only 3 can be viewed. Same thing with Laurie Exel’s sensor cleaning class (only 3 of the 10 segments are available).
It sounds as though you aren’t actually logging in to the Kelby Training site properly – as you are only seeing the first few “preview chapters”.
Be sure to login, go to the Online Training option in the top menu, then click on the big green Access Now button on the right – you should find all the chapters of a class are available.
Hey Andy!
I’ve logged in the way you suggested (and I know I’m logged in because I can view my account info etc… and the LOGOUT option is up top) but I still only get the 1st 3 lessons… I’ve not been able to view all lessons for months now even though my subscription is valid.
I’ve tried in both IE and Firefox, and from work and from home (on 2 different laptops as well as my PC.)

Standby… my bad! My NAPP membership is valid, but my on-line training has apparently expired (D’uh!) I didn’t know the two were separate (I extended my membership at a NAPP seminar last year and I guess I assumed that extended the on-line training as well.)
Thanks for the kick in the pants…. I’m off to renew.
John
Hi Scott,
Great Site – Hay can you possibly give (throw us a bone) us some taste – flavor – something of what might be Photoshop CS5? – on your photoshoooooptv website? J
