My First Prints on Metal
I’m not talking about “metallic prints” (which are prints made on Kodak metallic-finish paper) I’m talking about images actually printed on metal (well, Aluminum to be exact). I got two different kinds in the past two weeks, from two different sources, so I’m going to cover them both here.
First, the print I’m holding above, which is from Image Wizards, and it’s one of their “AluminArte” images (which they call, “High Definition Images on Aluminum”).
On their site (link) they make a pretty bold statement:
“Remember the first time you saw HDTV? Our AluminArte samples will show you a level of imaging never seen before.”
I have to admit—it’s actually right on the money. My buddy Matt Kloskowski had the first AluminArte print I’d ever seen (it was of his amazing landscape shot of a barn in Washington State’s Polouse region), and when it came in the office, we all just stood around it slack-jawed. I’d never seen anything like it. Then when mine print came in (shown above), we all did the same thing—the depth and detail is like what you see on HDTV (compared to regular broadcast).
The sad thing is—-in a regular photo of it (like you see above—photo by Brad Moore), you lose all that depth and dimension that you see so clearly in person (just imagine seeing a HDTV image on a regular TV with no HD and you know what I mean). I found a video on their site, about the process, but again, because it’s video, it can’t show the depth of this type of printing on any level (this is just one of those “you have to see it with your own eyes” type of things).
Anyway, I’m incredibly impressed, and I’m going to have some of my favorite images reprinted as AluminArte images when I get back from Photoshop World. Here’s the link to their site.
Now, onto the 2nd type of metallic printed image:
This one is actually a six-piece mural (made up of six 12″x12″ metallic tiles) from Metal Murals and although theirs isn’t the Hi-Def type of images that I got from Image Wizards, the impact here comes from the size and presentation.
The funny thing is; these two types of images had a different impact on different groups of people. The photographers in my office lost their minds over the quality of the Hi-Def image (shown above), but everybody (the non-serious photo crowd) were all taken in by the mural. Everybody was talking about it when it came in (and a bunch of golfers in the office wanted to snag it for their office).
The pole they’re connected to (shown here, with the help of Brad Moore—photo by Matt Kloskowski), are also how you mount them to your wall (it came with the mounts, and it’s pretty darn clever how the whole thing works).
Also, you can buy a much smaller 12″x12″ sample version (the size of just one tile) if you want to make a proof for your client before creating the final full-sized mural. Since the mural will have gaps, I think this is really a smart idea—especially if you’re creating a really large mural (these murals can be any size, and not just made up of 12″x12″ squares, and you can have more than just six squares).
They’ve got a page of samples on their site (link) and from their sample page, these must be very popular for tradeshow displays (or it just includes a lot of photos from their own tradeshow booth—I couldn’t tell). Here’s the link to Metal Murals Website.
Anyway, despite the fact that the ‘metallic-ness’ of both types of printing get totally lost when you show a regular photo of them (like you see here), when you see them in person—-either one—-you’ll be amazed at how much impact they have.

Cool sites, thanks for the reviews here. From the images you sent to each, it looks like the former might work better with HDR type works, and the latter might work better with panorama type works. I’ve toyed with the idea of putting together an HDR pano shot, but it’s still dangling out of reach for me. If you had to chose one for something like that though, it’d be interesting to know what your preferences are, or at least what the pros and cons are for each vendor.
Hi Jason,
I am Amanda with Image Wizards. I just wanted to let you know that we most certainly can do HDR Pano’s for you. We go up to 4′x8′ on a single piece. I would love to see what you had in mind and go from there if you would like. Just contact me through our website!
Thanks!
Amanda
wow that’s cool.
I’ll look into some of their stuff.
Fantastic idea and they look great on the site, so in reality must be breathtaking.
Thanks for sharing Scott,
All the best,
Glyn
I will definitely be sending some of my images their way if they post to the UK
I saw one of these in a gallery once and was very impressed. The price though is pretty brutal. a 12×20 from them costs $200+. And to get a nice poster sized print, your looking at $400.
Hey Scott,
Very nice. Maybe we will see one of these next week in Vegas, hint, hint.
See ya in 10 days.
Mike
Mike, Metal Murals will be an exhibitor AND they have a NAPP member discount. Check out the discounts section of the NAPP members’ site.
Hi Mike,
Image Wizards here. We will definitely be at PSW West. We are booth 352. We would love for you to come out and see for yourself what we can do. We look forward to seeing you there!
Amanda
Haven’t tried any of the Mpix metal prints? I was hoping to see how they compare to these. Anyone?
Thanks Scott
They are nice. i had one of Willie Nelson that i took and it was cool.
I have a sample from imagewizards and thought it was not that much better than metallic paper. The material is cool and my have a purpose but side by side to metallic paper I could not see the cost as being worth it. Not sure if the large size makes a diifference but I would like to hear more opinions.
Steve, A friend of mine developed the metalic paper while working for SRI (Standford Research Institute) and said the AluminArte had much deeper blacks with saturation of color past what the metalic papers can offer. Don’t forget the added cost of mounting your print, framing, and lets not forget crating once it is all complete.:)

Oh, my Wow! That first image of the football player really pops. It looks like a 3D image, and that lighting is perfect for a metallic print. Color me impressed! (Visting the website now…)
Hey Scott,
Since we saw the Metal Murals booth at the FPPA show in Orlando, Vanelli hasn’t been able to stop talking about them. …or maybe it was because of Pola and her sister who were working the booth that day—I don’t know.
Anyway, they do have a great product. They actually had a duplicate of your Tiger Woods mural on display there so we got to see it before you did.
Scott, thanks for posting the info for Image Wizards. They have three finish types – white aluminum high gloss, white aluminum satin, and brushed aluminum satin. Which process did you use, and likewise for Matt’s print?
Thanks.
Extremely cool Scott! I’m a huge fan of the metallic prints offered by MPix, and even though I own my own professional print shop I still use MPix for metallic print work. Looks like I’ll have to try out Image Wizards now too!
Recently we started doing tile prints in our shop (my partner’s side of the business). Multi-piece murals are finally being ordered, and there’s something to be said for that style. We’re setting up a 24 tile mural this week for an in home installation. This stuff is big fun. I wonder what the metallic mural would be like…….
Mpix Pro has something similar to the metal murals option. Have you had the chance to check out their offerings yet, Scott?
You can do this yourself:
Bonny Lhotka, artist and author, through http://www.digitalartstudioseminars.com has DVD’s with instructions, and coatings and panels that allow you to do this even on desktop printers.
Disclosure: This is a family business, and I’m part of the family
I would love for you to bring one to the show and I would be more than happy to put it next to AluminArte for everyone to see and compare.

Booth is 352
Thats incredible Scott, thanks for sharing. I would love to see a comparison with the MPixPro metal print option. I am weighing both companies for my new office studio for some prints.
Scott (or anyone else who has experience with metallic prints) – is there a certain kind of print that benefits the most from this kind of print process (other than the obvious “good pictures” response)? Is the “depth and dimension” effect of which you speak evident on, say, B&W images? monochromatic images? In other words, does this effect only really benefit very colorful images or would any good print benefit?
Thanks much for any info you can provide.
Hi Cary,
I actually just recorded a video for NAPP members on this so I can’t speak to it.
1. Certain kind of print? Everything looks great. I would have always said photos with lots of blues, greens and yellows look good. But then I saw Scott’s football player with the black background and it just looks amazing. Its hard to even tell from the photo, but the black just looks fantastic. So I think anything is fair game here but I do love blues, greens and yellows.
2. Black and whites tend to take on a silver effect. It almost doesn’t look B&W anymore. Very cool stuff for B&Ws.
3. TIP: I’ve found these types of prints can handle just a little bit of extra sharpening so if you do order anything, try cranking up the sharpening by about 10% extra or use the “High” settings in Lightroom.
Take care,
Matt K
Scott, Thanks for the great review! FYI, Image Wizards can produce a single shot on AluminArte up to 4′ x 8′ and we have produced murals up to 32′ (for Lowes suite at Charlotte Motor Speedway). I have been an innovator of this imaging process since 1972. We have an unmatched level of quality and a state of the art, 52,000sf manufacturing facility. Also an 11″ square proof is provided for approval of your art/photography before final production.

Just saw a metal print for the first time last Thursday – they’re gorgeous – thanks for the links to providors, I have a couple I want to do this with.
I enjoy the content of your (and many other photo/graphic industry related professional’s) blogs/site. I learn so much from them, and thanks for doing all this.
One question that keeps popping in the back of my mind though, is wondering if there isn’t some way that bloggers would denote/flag specific companies from which they receive link-back money, or other financial/product consideration. It’s obvious many of the group are doing this as a living (or supplement), and that’s completely fine in every way, and referencing each other’s sites is a great volume builder amongst peers. It would simply be nice to know when financial/product considerations were given along with content…. then again, maybe all the bloggers just drop names of businesses 100% goodwill basis, and I’m wrong – it wouldn’t be the first time…. lol
Hi Lyle:
I don’t get a kick-back, royalty, kick-back or anything from these companies (I don’t even know anyone at these companies).
If I do mention someone’s blog, and offer a link, if they are a friend, I generally say “my buddy….” or “My good friend…” or something to let you know they’re a personal friend.
If I mention a company, it’s because I really like their product—plain and simple. I often mention companies that don’t who me, or who I am, and that’s fine with me (they’re not my audience. You are).
Hope that helps.

Scott I love my metal murals. I found them at wppi a couple years back and was blown away. check out my sample for my clients. http://miguelpola.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-products-aluminart-for-orange.html
So, checking out Metal Mural site and their pricing is nowhere to be found (even under their own FAQ’s where the question asks about charges)… Also, says their product is only available via “photographic professionals”… what does that mean and by whose definition?
Awesome stuff you gots going on there!! Keep it coming Scott!!!

I can’t find nothing on line about Photoshop World West hmmmmmm. Are you talking about WPPI in Vegas?
OMG Scott – I can’t believe it – this time I’m even up with what you’re doing. I just got my first metal prints two weeks ago. Absolutely incredible. The images just jump off the surface. Love the analogy with HDTV. I used BayPhoto and they did a fanatastic job with marvelous turnaround time. Looking forward to PSW. See you there.
I use BayPhoto for my metal prints and they get great response. The only thing is that it is tough in my area to get the galleries to understand not having a hanging wire. In some of the group shows I have been in, the handing wire thing has been an issue.
But the images are OUTSTANDING and the fact that they are so easy to clean and are so durable is a real selling point!
Is that… Jared? from Subway?
Great work Scott….
Ralph
Scott, love your blog and NAPP. I also love Roger’s Aluminarte!! It has to been seen to believe. I have two pieces in my home. One is brushed aluminum and the other is like yours on the high gloss finish. I shot the pic with my digital rebel, file size only3MB. My daughter sitting in a cedar tree is 20×30 and one can see every berry in the tree. Warning that everything will be seen, including dirt/stains etc as this is just like a high def tv picture. My daughter in a field of wildflowers is on the brushed and it is much softer and surreal. Shot with my 20D in RAW it was much better still. I sent Roger a Bride portrait done with a MarkII in RAW and it is spectacular. The more pixels the merrier in this cool output. Expensive, but Porsche owners do not tend to complain….
I was one of the first photographers to recognize the potential that the Alumin Arte process, produced by Image Wizards, had to create really stunning images for both my commercial and Fine Art clients.
One of the elusive goals for me as a photographer was to reproduce in print the benchmark look of a beautiful transparency backlight on a light box.
Every process used to reproduce images, either from film or digital files left something out of the printing process. The Alumin Arte process by Image Wizards give you everything you thought you would never get in image reproduction.
I have ordered up to 4′ x 8′ Alumin Arte pieces (yes, that’s 4×8 feet of imagery) ready to hang or mount on a wall for some of my clients, and the reaction is always, how do they do that!
The difference working with Image Wizards is apparent in all aspects of the process from file prep, printing & framing……..and just wait you see their custom wooden shipping crates that your image safely arrives in.
I have ordered over 50 pieces from Image Wizards since we started to work together, and I am still thrilled each time they convert one of my photographs into one of their ultra high quality, ready to hang, images.
Does anyhone know if they ship to Europe? Didn’t find that on their site…
Thanks!
Hi Steven,
Metal Mural does ship to Europe. Shipping is more cost effective because of our modular design. We can ship a large Metal Mural in a relatively small box. Please feel free to contact us for a shipping quote.
Thank you,
Pola Ariel

Hi Steven,
We do ship internationally at Image Wizards. We have sent several pieces to many different countries around the world including Spain, Australia, Sweden, and of course our neighbors in Canada. We would be happy to quote you on a custom project. Just give us a call @ 800.849.3390 or contact us via our website http://www.imagewizards.net/contact .

Can you say tacky with a capitol T ?
Kind of a cheap shot coming from a direct competitor in the art printing business, isn’t it, Mark?
Thanks for a great blog Scott! When I started selling prints 18 months ago I was all about the Kodak Endura Metallic on a 3/4″ Standout. Times have changed, and Aluminum Dye Sub prints are now my primary print media. I’ve ordered a bunch through Bay Photo over the last six months. Was not aware of these other two options till recently, looking forward to trying them out…
As to the cost issue that Mark raised, yep they’re more expensive than most other media, but they’re also technically superior. Unlike traditional mounting you never have a problem with surface texturing, and you can clean an aluminum print with Windex! How cool is that?! I have yet to find an effective way to get fingerprints off a Kodak Endura Metallic print…
In any case, you simply pass the added cost on to the consumer anyway. You’d be surprised how many people will pay $200 for an 8×10…
At BayPhoto they nearly the same price as a Giclee gallery wrap, which what I see requested a lot in my area.
Has anyone compared the metal prints from Bayphoto vs. Image wizards? Big price difference.
Mike,
Your looking at the framed pricing from Image Wizards compared to unframed pricing at Bay Photo. Compare the Frameless box mount pricing at Image Wizards and you will find pricing simular to Bay Photo. Don’t forget IW has been involved in this imaging for 30 years and metal prints is all they do.
What no one seems to want to say is that these metal prints do not give you a true white, as I’ve discovered from samples from two different companies. They may be great at saturated color, as all the carefully selected samples show, but if your photo depends on contrast from a full range of tones, it’s going to look dull.
Hi. This information proved to be very useful. Can you please provide more aspects of this subject? Thanks.

Just got an order of 3 metals prints (24 by X) from Bay Photo.
The form factor and offset hanger is great.
Unfortunately, I’m working on this as a fine art limited edition and these prints don’t make it. They are OK and maybe good but for a critical fine art photographer there are issues:
-loss of shadow detail
-over doing blacks
-sharpness of image lost, generally too soft
The upload specs (and size) are limited and sharpening colour space instructions not forthcoming.
I guess I’ll have to work with someone else even if more expensive. The prints are promising but have lost too much in the process.
John
Hi guys.
I just got small samples in from Image Wizards. The small sample-size and the image they chose didn’t do enough to make me act. I’m looking forward to seeing something on display somewhere to get a better idea of what they actually look like. I think these will do well in commercial spaces. But, for now, they’re too expensive to take a chance on sight unseen (except for the samples)..
