Breaking News: Adobe Releases Lightroom 3 Public Beta
Yup—it’s true! Lightroom 3 is here! (Well, the free public beta version is here, anyway).
Of course to get you up to speed fast on all the cool new goodies in Beta 3, NAPP (The National Assn. of Photoshop Professionals) has put together a Lightroom 3 Beta Learning Center, with videos from Matt Kloskowski and me, along with articles and info from RC Concepcion, and an exclusive video interview with Lightroom Product Manager Tom Hogarty.
Also, later today look for Matt’s “Lightroom 3 Beta Power Session” full training class to go live on Kelby Training, which teaches all the new features in depth, and how they relate to, and update your current Lightroom workflow.
Now, all that being said—just remember—this is a pre-release Beta testing version, so it’s far from the final finished product (if history is any indicator, when the real version ships, it will have more features, and lots of other improvements), so just remember—this is not a “finished” product, but a early testing version they’re letting you use for free to get your feedback before they release the shipping product at a later date.
So, definitely go to our Lightroom 3 Learning Center to get the full scoop (here’s the link), but in the meantime, here’s a 30-second look at some of my favorite stuff in the public beta:
(1) Importing has been redesigned with a new import window that lets you easily see where your images are coming from and where they’re going, with lots of little improvements and enhancements to make the process easier and much more visual.
(2) Drag and Drop Publishing to the Web (and more). Now you can just drag and drop an image to have it automatically published directly from Lightroom right up to Flickr, or directly to an iPhone sync folder, etc..
(3) Pro-level Noise Reduction. This is an area that Lightroom always lagged behind on, but now they have real pro-level noise reduction which competes, or beats, about anything out there (especially because it can do its noise reduction at the Raw file level, rather than on a processed 8-bit file).
(4) Built-in Film Grain feature. There’s been a lot of buzz recently about bringing back that film-grain look, and now that’s built right in.
(5) Better vignetting by a long shot. They really enhanced the post crop vignetting, and now post crop gives you a much better looking, and more natural result (and you have two choices for the type of vignetting effect as well).
(6) You can finally (finally, finally!!!!!) export a slideshow with music embedded in the slideshow (at last), and you can have your slideshow automatically sync the length of the slideshow to the length of your song. Plus, they made it so, on a Mac, you don’t need to use iTunes to host your slideshow music.
(7) Real watermarking is here! Now you can create real watermarks, at different sizes and opacities, and put them where you want them, for both web and print.
(8) Create print layouts with photos wherever you want them. Now there’s a Custom Print Package feature that lets you put as many photos, in whatever shape and size, on the page wherever you want them (you’re no longer restricted to use a grid of uniform cells), so now you can really come up with some creative print layouts without having your hands tied.
(9) You can change the background color for prints. Now you can choose any color as your background for printed pages. I know it sounds like a little thing, but it’s big.
(10) The Collections panel is now in the Develop Module, too. This one addition will dramatically increase your efficiency because now you don’t have to constantly switch back and forth between the Library Module and Develop Module, because you can get to all your collections and images from right within the Develop Module itself.
Plus, there are dozens of other little enhancements, fixes, improvements, and other little features which are scattered throughout the program—-but just remember—-it’s not done yet! (So don’t start posting questions like, “Why isn’t this feature or that feature not there?” because (say it with me, “It’s not done!”).
Now, go check out NAPP’s Learning Center, (link) where you’ll find a direct link to download the free public beta of Lightroom 3 direct from Adobe Labs. Sweet!!!! It’s a great day for Lightroom users!
P.S. Terry White, over at Terry’s Tech Blog has a video on Lightroom 3 Beta as well. Here’s the link.

mmm… link to the lightroom 3 learning center not working?
oh sorry for jumping to the what’s wrong with the link question too fast that i didn’t even express how excited i am to this news… ever since i started working in LR back in version 1.2… i never looked back… it made my life a lot easier… thank you for keeping us updated… cheers!
Any idea on a planned launch date? I did play around with LR2’s free beta, but I disliked having 2 catalogs so I’m not sure I’m going to do that again.
The link for the Beta download on the Learning Center website is for LR2, not LR3
Just a heads up if you didn’t know
Downloading now and can’t wait to try it out
P.S. Beta doesn’t support catalog upgrading
Booo
Also, in the video for the noise reduction is says the Luminance reduction will be grayed out.
Mine seems to be working…and very well at that
When you update to the latest process version the Luminance slider will be grayed out.
I caught the comment about the luminance slider being grayed out as well.
When I tested it earlier on a RAW image it WAS grayed out. I edited the image in noise ninja and brought it back in to LR# to compare and noticed the luminance slider was active and worked as expected. Is it file type that drives this ?
THIS IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!!!! Shooting a band this Friday & Saturday. Looks like I’ll see what its made of then!
Some very significant improvements. Thank you Adobe
Seriously cannot contain my excitement! I can’t wait to check this out!
Cool
Soft proofing ???
Not in the beta…
Also, while you’re all justifiably excited by the beta, please be careful here, its a beta and not to be relied upon for anything but testing/playing around. That is, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to upgrade an existing beta library to the final, move from 2.x to 3.x and back (in some cases, that’s not going to fly). Be cautious here before you let all the excitement hose your masters or workflow. Its called a beta for a reason (and don’t assume that just because you had a seamless beta experience in b1 or b2 the same will be true here). Use common sense. Had to be said…
Gotta save some features up so that they can flog Lightroom 4 !
And no doubt this means that support for the latest DSLRs such as the 7D etc will be deferred so we all have upgrade from version 2
Great to see the new beta online!
I’ve already downloaded en installed it. First impression is it’s slower than Lightroom 2. Perhaps my hardware needs an update..
It might not be as optimized either.
Just downloaded it; will take it for a test run later today. Hopefully they’ll manage to introduce some new color correction tools. Would be great to have something like seperate rgb curve adjustments or levels as in Aperure! Kudos for Adobe to release beta software; it shows they appreciate community feedback.
Looking good Lightroom!
I’m sure we’re going to see a flood of images shot at ISO crazy (ala Canan and Nikons new cameras) that look perfectly acceptable for print thanks to raw noise reduction.
Way awesome! Especially excited about built in noise reduction and improved photo rendering! Do we think it’s at all likely that Adobe will release Panorama stitching right into lightroom? That would almost eliminate my need for Photoshop but for major portrait retouching! That and a proper levels adjustment…
Panorama stitching and HDR processing in LR4 – that’s my bet!
This sure sounds like some great improvements!!!
Especially the film grain and noise reduction improvements are very welcome!
One feature that I’m still missing is an “image lock”, preventing any modifications of the image including deletion and updated modification of processing methods.
I have noticed that some of my images changed from LR version to another, due to the fact that Adobe changed the way the processing works. For example the camera calibration was updated a while ago, resulting in drastic color shifts in already postprocessed images.
Another missing feature is softproofing with print/paperprofiles.
That’s for me the only reason to use CS3 now and then….
can’t wait to try this out tonight!
Looks exciting!!
How about tethered shooting??
And please, also “pro-level” sharpening??
Oh and YES please please softproofing?
I hope you’re reading this Adobe!
I vote for tethered shooting as well!
Hey Scott,
I noticed the following on the Lightroom Beta site:
This download will install the Lightroom 3 beta and will work independently alongside your installation of Lightroom 1 or higher. The beta version is intended to provide an opportunity to give feedback and as such, does not read, upgrade or import catalogs from previous versions of Lightroom. If you currently own Lightroom, please continue to use Lightroom 1 or higher for your primary workflow needs.
Just to clarify, anything I do in 3 won’t transfer to 2 and I’ll need to reinstall 3 at a later date, right?
Thanks!
Stacie
Hi Stacie,
• Yep, nothing will transfer to version 2.
• As for reinstalling 3, you’ll definitely need to reinstall the full version when it does come out. Adobe makes no promise that “beta” catalogs will upgrade to the real version when it comes out but I’m pretty sure they upgraded just fine with version 2.
Thanks,
Matt K
I just love that every question I have is answered on this site within a day of the original post! I am new to all of this but have been using LR for a year so when this version came out I downloaded it and then I had two copies of LR. Beta? What’s that? So now I know! Thanks a million to Scott, Matt, and all of the knowledgeable readers who answer simple questions for those like me!!!
The fact that Adobe is making their betas publicly available is a major reason for props. Not only do we get to play with it before it hits the shelves, but we can also tell Adobe about bugs before it even ships! And Adobe is one of the few companies that actually listens to customers while in the beta phase of testing….
My favorite feature has to be #6 – have been waiting on this for a while! Exporting slide shows with music takes things to a whole new level of presentation, so good job Adobe!
What a great way to start the morning. The noise reduction feature alone is near and dear to my heart. No more having to go into Photoshop for noise reduction alone. This will really help with Scott’s extended range processing.
Since I use Lightroom for my wide format print management, I like the new layout concept. Less paper and canvas waste? Oh yeah! The list sounds great. Oh Adobe, you’re going to get more of my money once more, aren’t you?
All joking aside, spending money on a product that’s really improved is never a problem. Guess I need to give the Beta a whirl……
Thanks for the question and clarification between Stacie and Matt. And people wonder why I read this site first thing each morning! Thanks guys.
Any word about using lightroom over a network? This would be the most time saving feature they could add that would improve workflow in my studio.
The printing format stuff would be usefull (I print photo cards to sell with lightroom, works like a charm)
I’m a little underwhelmed, especially for a full point release. seems more like a 2.5. Hope they keep updating the raw in version 2 for newer cameras after this comes out.
But then again I mainly use LR for organization and light touch up, and photoshop as my main editor. Better integration between those two would be welcome.
I heard that in the final release, when you upgrde your catalog, all of your previous keywording will be ignored and you will have to re-keyword all of your photos.
…I’m just kidding! I’m just kidding!
**runs from room, ducking and sheilding head with arms to avoid thrown objects**
Did you hear my shotgun chamber?
Would love the ability to apply RELATIVE adjustments to photos in the Print and Export / Web / Slideshow modules and to be able to save them as a output medium specific user presets.
I feel that images need slightly different tone, brightness, and colour balance if the image is destined for your calibrated monitor vs to the web for viewing on uncalibrated monitors (usually too bright) vs to your calibrated printer vs to a consumer level photo/print lab (usually exaggerates contrast and over-saturates colours), etc.
Not to mention, people view prints in a variety of lighting conditions. I feel it’s best to tailor my prints for the prospective viewing condition. Like boosting the lows/mids and a cooler WB for the vacation pics you’re sending to mom because you know she’s going to look at them in her living room with the incandescent light beside the sofa, or adding a slight magenta shift for the prints you show under fluorescent light. It would be nice not to have to create different print profiles just to print vacation pics for mom
(Mom: the pictures are too dark and orangy! i can’t see your face…
Photographer: are you using a D50 illuminant of 800-1200 lumens?)
Once I get my images “right”, I don’t really want to make separate virtual copies and collections to compensate for the characteristics of different output devices / media / viewing conditions for the different audiences that will view my images.
I definitely look forward to the slideshow feature.
the only think, should i get LR 2 or wait for LR 3?
Scott,
Watermarking is also available at Export (not just Print and Web, like you say in Point # 7)
The first thing I noticed is that for a beta, it starts-up quite fast (Mac OS X 10.6.1) Also, under Snow Leopard it runs in 64bit.
“It’s an opportunity for you to evaluate a select portion of the new features planned for Lightroom 3″ Is what I read on the Adobe Labs site, more features coming
I wonder if Adobe will implement the final release of the new Adobe Camera profiles in the final version of LR3.0
well here’s an interesting find.
I am playing with the beta and I found about a dozen .DNG files where the Luminance slider for noise reduction is available and working perfectly fine. Great in fact. But they I open other .DNG, .jpg, .tiff…files and it’s not available as Matt and Scott mentioned. HAHA.
well just so you all know. Luminance noise reduction is a big plus!
I’ve read in the Adobe Forums that the Luminance slider will be greyed out on NEW IMPORT. But if you import an old RAW that already has an XMP or an old DNG, then the Luminance slider will be available.
that would make sense except that technically all the photos are “new” imports and only half of the .DNG files I have can use the luminance. haha. oh well. like I said, it works well so at least I got to try it.
Hey guys,
As some one mentioned, it only works when you import photos that were previously processed. If so, you’re using the old “Process Version” and not taking advantage of the new stuff for sharpening and noise removal (and vignettes). Once you convert to the new process version (Go to the Settings menu) that slider will go away as its not hooked up yet.
Matt K
Scott – does the improved vignetting do away with the banding that you’d see in light print areas (like a bright cloudy sky) when files were saved to 8-Bit sRGB JPEGs for commercial printing? I know that was a significant issue for me with my work because I love the vignette effect to highlight the subject and I’d get unusable results back from MPIX Pro / Millers (but the same is apparently true for any 8 Bit JPEG Noritsu printing shop) because of the banding through the highlights.
Localized brushes for certain sliders would be awesome too!
i.e.
Recovery Brush
Fill Light Brush
Vibrance Brush
Noise reduction Brush etc….
I love lightroom! Marry me lightroom!
Still asking for a preset for cameras converted to IR that reads the RAW files directly by pixel rather than going through the Bayer algorithm. Should be a simple thing to put in the code.
I like what I’m seeing, one thing I absolutely need to see in this when it releases, better shortcuts, I want shortcuts or the ability to create shortcuts for EVERYTHING, including sliders! I don’t want to buy 3rd party devices at outrages prices to get these features. I’m working on making my own solution, but I really would rather just have it so everyone can use it. For the cost of the program!
The noise reduction is incredibly improved! Lightroom 2 wasn’t even useable, and now 3 seems to be better than other 3rd party programs. The images still look grainy when the noise is pretty bad though, is there a way to smooth that out?
#8 of your list is what I have been waiting on hearing. Being able to place different sized images on one large piece of photographic paper is great. (I even asked for this at Imaging USA last year at the Adobe booth)
Now my question for clarification: Can you layout several completely different images and sizes (beach photo, wedding photo, kids, etc.) on a large page of photographic paper? Right now you are locked into only being able to layout several sizes of the “exact same” image. Hope that made sense to you……
From what I have seen and tried, you can layout a variety of different image in different sizes on the same sheet.
So you can have a 5×7 of the kids next to a 4×6 of a mountain with a 2×8 pano all on the same sheet.
There are lots of great possibilities with this one.
It is so great to see these improvements. I’m also excited by the new print module but can somebody tell me whether you can also have more than one custom text box on the print?
Good point Antonio! I forgot about that one. I would like to be able to place my logo on several images and rotate it to fit anyway that I would like it to on each image.
Is the NR able to be applied by an adjustment brush? I rarely need to apply NR to a whole image. As a result I have to jump across CS to apply it to the areas that actually need it.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for softproofing!
Awesome! But I just pray for a clone stamp in Lightroom. That would make me a happy, happy man.
I would like to have full curve editing – now I cannot make low-contrast BW photos without using PS.
Adobe – please….. !!!
But I can’t use it… I have a G5 and it won’t work on my computer. Nowhere have I seen anyone tell us that they cut us off.
As much I would like to understand your blog bur my bad english is problem.
