Another Little Lightroom 3 Tweak/Fix I Love
Here’s another one of those ‘tiny big things’ that Adobe fixed in Lightroom 3 that used to make me pull my hair out in previous versions of Lightroom.
Now, by know you’ve probably heard about the big thing they fixed in the Slideshow module; you can now export your slideshow with the background music embedded (at long last!), and although this other little fix has to do with music, it’s not the embed thingy. In fact it’s not one thingy. It’s two (thing 1 and thing 2).
Thing 1: You can now automatically have Lightroom 3 set the length of your slideshow to the length of your background music. You do that by clicking directly on the Duration (as shown above). Now, if you’re thinking “Why would they make this feature hidden like that?” I thought the same thing at first, but then I realized that if Adobe actually made stuff like this really simple and easy to find, then I’d be out of a job….so….thanks Adobe!
Thing 2: In previous versions of Lightroom, adding background music on a Mac was different than it was on a PC. For example; on a PC; you just put an MP3 file in a folder, then in Lightroom you pointed to that folder and you were done. On a Mac, Lightroom required you use to use Apple’s iTunes to host your music, and you had to create a playlist with just one song if you indeed wanted just one song. The problem was—it didn’t always work. It did most of the time, but not always.
Also, you had to have iTunes up and running before you started your slideshow, or it wouldn’t launch the application until you hit the Play button in your Lightroom slideshow, so there would be this long pause until it launched, opened, and started playing your song. Anyway, they thankfully did away with having to use iTunes on a Mac, and now Mac and PCs work the same.
Again, this is the little stuff, but it’s this kind of stuff that makes a big difference in the end because it all adds up.

LR 3 feature appreciated
I like that I can now enter a long directory chain into a selection window (PC) instead of having to navigate from the very top level, directory by directory.
This was especially irritating when trying to associate orphaned lightroom images to the files on my computer (which seems to happen way too often). Never understood why we had to do it the hard way before.
Regarding the slide show and background music feature, I still find I have to manually tweak the length of the slide show with the background music. Even though you can have Lightroom 3 do this for you as Scott has mentioned by clicking on Duration, I have found that it’s not very accurate. Either the music runs beyond the last photo on the slide show or the music ends way to early before the last photo on the slide show. I have had to manually adjust the slide duration and fade times, or add more photos, so the slide show ends at the same time as the background music ends. I’m not sure if this feature is going to be more accurate when the final version of Lightroom 3 is released or if I’m just doing something wrong. I’ve tried this feature many times and I get the same results, it’s not accurate. Also if you convert this slide show to a HD video, beware! It takes a very long time to convert it and be sure you have allot of hard drive space and memory. The file is enormous and it puts a load on your computer system when it’s converting. I still use Pro Show Producer by Photodex for my slide show presentations.
Cool tip I didn’t know about. La neige d’antans! ; )
While I do like the feature that automates the length of the slideshow based on the track, I feel there is one drawback from the previous version. What if I want a selection of tracks to play as in a “playlist”. Presumably I will have to make a new recording.
While the ability to export slideshows is a huge improvement, I feel the current workflow in LR3 has taken a step backwards. As a Mac user, I simply had to make a playlist in iTunes and use that for my slideshow in LR2.
1) Now I’ve got to actually navigate to where the song file is located (how many users know where their iTunes/xxx songs are located in the directory structure?).
2) Echo above sentiment about playlists.
3) LR3 will play .m4a files but not .m4p files (grayed out). I’m sure this has to do with DRM and exporting, which is well and good but if I don’t want to export the slideshow but play on my computer, I should be able to use the .m4p like I could in LR2.
I know that there are workarounds for 3) but it makes for a very clunky workflow.
I was just playing with this last night. I an accidentally clicked on the duration and it shortened my 12 min slide show to 3mins. It took me forever to figure out why my slide show was suddenly going so fast.
So now that you select a song rather than an itunes playlist is it possible to have more than one song on your slide show?
Wow it’semms that Lightroom 3 wil be my first shoping items for 2010!
Are you all satisfied with the few changes to LR2.6
I’m disappointed about it. The Slideshow without Ken Burns Effects, only one Track for the Slides., no Photobook-Function….
I love LR from the beginning but now i’m waiting for the Aparture 3, test it and maybe change…
