The New Season of D-Town TV Is Finally Here!
Hi Gang: Well, it seems like forever, but we’re finally back with our 2nd Season of D-Town TV, and what better guest to have on our first new episode than Mr. Joe McNally himself. We’ve got a lot packed into this show, and we hope you guys like the new wide-open format (it’s no longer just Nikon only) and the range of topics we’re now covering.
Also, we’re leaving the first season of D-Town TV online as well so we can refer back to particular episodes and specific techniques, and you can find those back episodes over at KelbyTV.com/DtownTV. Thanks everybody for hanging in there with us, about without further ado: Season 2, Episode 1:

Thanks for letting us Canon users in on the fun!
Agreed! Not all of us rock Nikons.
Who let all the riff-raff in? =)
Not seeing it on the original iTunes feed. Is there a new feed for season 2 that we need to subscribe to?
Hey Scotty – You may’ve noticed a couple of minor things that need to be tweaked in this episode. We’re working to fix those things before it goes out in the iTunes feed. We’ll also replace the videos that are already online with the corrected versions.
Thanks for watching!

Perfect… I’ll look for the update later.
Welcome back guys, and Happy New Year!
Fantastic News!
Looking forward to seeing the new format and content but I’m still baffled how you guys find the hours to do all this stuff; any chance of doing a tutorial on that too?…lol
All the best to you,
Glyn
I am so glad to see the show back on! I learn something new each episode. The sports tips were great as I am shooting some Basketball games right now…thanks…May I make a suggestion? You guys are really enthusiastic and animated which makes for an energetic episode, but do you realize you are hitting the desk top all the time with your hands…? A bit jarring…hope you don’t mind my mentioning it. It does take away a bit from the presentation….
Hy Suzanne,
You must be new to DTown. They did this on the last season of the show and lots of people commented on it – and they never stopped. I think the banging on the desk is here to stay so I’ve just gotten used to it
Great show guys!
Thanks Steve,
You just… well… get us

Suzanne, watch last few episodes of photoshousertv.com and there is one that explains all the crazy stuff that makes these nuts so fun to watch.
Broader and quicker format – well done and welcome back to an appreciative audience.
Thanks guys. I know how much (actually, I guess) time you guys put into a FREE broadcast like this, and I really appreciate the helpful tips and tricks you give.
One think I was very surprised about however, was Scott’s tips for shooting sports. I seriously didn’t think you would move to JPG over raw. Is this something most paid photographers are doing when shooting events such as this?
YES is the short answer. Most sports photographers don’t have time to process RAW images. Check Scott’s Jan. 5th article when he shot the OutBack Bowl… he spent all of halftime uploading images to his client Southcreek Global Media. Shooting for yourself is one thing, but shooting for a client that sells the images instantaneously–as the game is happening–is quite another. I’m sure Scott will also get on here and give you all the techie reasons why they shoot sports in JPEG (like you get more images in the buffer at a time, etc), but suffice it to say… YES most sports pro’s shoot in JPEG. Hope this helps,
It’s the only way to shoot sports! Right on Rod!
Glad to see the show is finally back.

Great to see you guys back,The New set looks good Far better than the old one.(worth the wait),
I Really appreciate all the tips you guys give ,practical & useful ,I like the Quick format no messing around.
Thanks for sharing, helpful stuff…
He guys, Great you’re back! Really like the new design! And in the first minutes allready a valuable tip about the neutral density filter! Last week I had the same problem shooting at lower shutterspeed in broad daylight. Now I know what to do!
Best wishes, Rudi, the Netherlands
Fantastic… welcome back !
Great to have the show back, I really enjoyed this episode, I like the fact that Matt put the extra bit about HDR on the website and not in the show, makes it easier to skip if you are not into that subject.
The new set is a great improvement and I’ll bet there is an increase in ND filter sales after this show.
Keep doing what your doing
I can’t believe I’ve just discovered d-town. Just proves once again that there’s nothing wrong with reminding people about things that have been around for awhile. The other thing is that I’m going to be busy going back and watching season one.
Yay – Friday lunchtime back to how it should be!
Glad to have you back.
1 small suggestion – Joe + Moose could do with a new promo vid
trust me, i know… we’re working on it though. all effort has been towards getting all the shows back up and running first
I am glad season 2 is finally here. Nice work.
Scott and Matt, finally! So glad to see the new season here after such a “short break”
You guys are great. I am looking forward to watching the show.
yeeeeee …. D-town tv is back! Thx. Nice work
Love it guys! I like the variations in sets as well as the on-location stuff as well. Also, it’s great that you reference back to specific Season 1 episodes and, Matt, you also referenced a specific time marker in the HDR episode. That will be very helpful in the future. (Are you making Brad watch the whole Season 1 and catalog all of the time markers for each topic???… sorry Brad!)
Also, who’s playing the guitar behind the NAPP/PSW promo? Scott? Is that you??? If so, you’ve been practicing!
I’ve heard Scott play and it has got to be him. Man they save a lot of money being so talented, don’t even have to buy music!
Hi Ken:
I wish I could play like that, but sadly, that’s not me.
Maybe one day!
-Scott
It’s great, even if you’re a veteran photog you can forget stuff. And for Roger (above) I remember that day about 5 episodes into first season when I found Dtown! I like the xtra video for HDR. You guys should do this more often.
You guys really do a great job with this show. I love the pace throughout, it really helps in keeping everyone’s atttention.
I found the sports tips to be great, I can’t wait to get out there and try them.
Scott-
The HDR bonus episode link is broken.
:-/
Can you do a follow up on how to do HDR for those of us that don’t have cameras with AEB? (Like a D40 for instance.)
Thanks!
I’m an amateur photographer who has a Canon (gasp!), so I never watched D-Town until now. I appreciate the great tips and love the format. I can’t wait for the rest of the season!
Great show guys! Looking forward to more……..
Welcome back guys, as always a wonderful episode chalk full of content. I appreciate all the production that goes into something like this. Very well done, indeed. Only downer is that D-town is like watching 24 when a new season starts, we have to wait a week to be fed again. Keep up the great work.
Kudos. I love the new format and think it’s a major improvement..keep up the good work.
Great Job!
For getting shutter speed at 1/1000 or faster shooting sports, do you use auto ISO? I have tried it using my D3, and it does not always work correctly. Seems simple enough to set up, but I must be doing something wrong.
Hey guys! Love the show. I also watch all of the Photoshop episodes as well. I am interested in adding HDR to my portraits. I still want them to be realistic, but with that extra pop. I would love it if you discussed usng HDR in portrait photography which would include HDR with one exposure vs multiple exposure vs in studio portrait and using photoshop to combine a stock hdr image, say of a football field, with the studio shot. Lastly, anything related to preparing images for print at MPIXS or other labs. Keep up the great work. If you are ever in the Bellingham, WA area, dinner is on me!
Awesome show guys. I shoot Canon so I didn’t watch season one, am so glad you expanded the format and invited us all in. Can’t wait for the rest of the season and I am going to got back and check out parts of season one. Thanks for all the hard work on this and on Photoshop TV.
Welcome back guys. Good work.
Three cheers for D-Town! Thanks so much for bringing it back. Loved the sports tips — can you please do more (or a book or a course at Kelby Training) — please! Will Brad be taking questions again? Brad — why is the fastest shutter speed for auto-ISO (on my D300) 1/250? Is there any way to get it to 1/500 or even 1/1000? Thanks!
LS3, One of the great perks of being a NAPP member is that you can send in questions that will be promply answered by one of the proffesionals on their staff (and I get my moneys worth). Are you talking about ISO sensitivity settings?
LS3… I’ll give Brad a hand with this one. Check the firmware version of your D300. It it isn’t 1.10 on both A and B the you will want to update it. It opens up the shutter speed limitations when using Auto ISO… This is from the Nikon USA site:
The range of settings available for ISO sensitivity settings > ISO sensitivity auto control > Minimum shutter speed in the shooting menu has been increased from 1/250 – 1s to 1/4000 – 1s.

Hope this helps…
This morning I watched all of the tutorials by Jan Kabili titled ‘Photoshop CS4: Image Compositing for Photographers’ at Lynda.com
Then I just happened to stop by Photoshop User TV, to see the most current episode.
I was a bit shocked that many of the processes taught on Jan’s tutorials were used as segments of the show. Like, you guys watched her tutorials and did a show on what you learned from her….and worse yet….you never mentioned her name.
Yes, once a process or trick or tweek is made public, anyone can pass it on. But, it was
just too damn obvious this time.
As far as I recall when watching the show earlier this week, the techniques in their tutorials are more or less common ones that I would not say belong to any specific instructor.
And, since Mr. Kelby wrote his first book on Photoshop for Photographers five years ago, it’s just as likely that Ms. Kabili based her tutorials on Scott’s techniques.
I’ve seen Scott teach live many times, and when he uses a technique he learnt from someone else, he ALWAYS gives them credit – even years later.
I consistently watch both sktraining.com and lynda.com and for some applications (computor) there are more on lynda, but when it comes to photography you can’t beat Kelby training. I agree with Richard, I have always know Scott to give credit where credit is due. In fact I’ve seen process which are obviously differnt and contradictory and I have to say, I stick with the Kelby media. Besides that some of the instructors on Lynda.com just plain get on my nerves (the guy that does CS4). It goes back to my college days (and that was some time ago) I can learn much more from a person that is articulate and interesting.
Thank you for all the hard work you put into that and providing it to us free. I’m still a newbie to the photography world (first DSLR in April 2009) but I’m loving it and learning tons from your books and blog.
Great to see it back.
All form the HQ involved in this have done a great job at it, all the re-launches lately.
I was surprised that Matt suggested shooting a landscape at F16-22. Everything I have heard for the last 5 years at least is that, due to diffraction, shooting beyond F8-11 degrades the resolution of an image. Could you discuss this?
Welcome back Guys – thanks for including us Canon shooters in the mix too.
Scott’s sports tips were great. I shoot a large number of soccer games here in the UK, and Scott’s advice of ’shoot low’ is a real top tip to make the subject larger than life.
When watching NFL games on TV, I have noticed the photographers either stand or kneel (never mind the touchdown, look at that 600mm lens!), however virtually all soccer snappers here use a small stool (or a rigid case) to sit on, rather than stand or kneel. Changing position on the sideline is still quite quick. What are your thoughts? Are there restrictions on seated snappers?
Also, I dream of shooting at 1/1000 sec; – perfect advice and easy in the daytime, but a number of the grounds I shoot night games at have floodlighting such that I struggle along at 1/320 or even 1/250 (anything less is useless) with the high ISO generating more noise than Scott’s band at full volume! Could you put some of that Florida sunshine in a box, and send it over here, please?
Scott & Matt…
Glad to see you’re back with season 2. Enjoyed the show very much, but I do have one question: Joe McNally does weddings?
Keep up the good work.
Dana
You had solid ideas there. I made a search on the issue and found most peoples will agree with your blog.
Usually I do not post on posts, but I would like to say that this site really forced me to do it! Thanks, very good post.
Hi guys,
DTOWNTV is awesome!
Every week I love to see your tips & tricks.
