The Best Photo Competition Prize Package of the Year?
September 4th, 2009 (7 Comments)

I know the prize package for the winner of the World Wide Photo Walk was pretty amazing, but of course, with 32,000 photographers who could enter up to two photos each, the competition was pretty amazing too, and your chances of winning were….well…..you can do the math.

That’s why I think the best opportunity for some killer prizes and big time recognition may be entering the Photoshop World Guru Awards competition (sponsored by iStockPhoto.com), and competing to win the “Vincent Versace Award for Excellence in Digital Imaging” (which is a sub-category of the photography category. Everyone that enters the photography category is automatically eliglible to win the “Vinny” award, which is chosen by Vincent himself).

This contest was created to honor the work of Photoshop World attendees, so only other attendees to this year’s conference in Vegas can enter, and not of all them: (a) are photographers, and (b) will enter. In fact, only a few hundred people will actually enter the competition at all, but the list of prizes for just the Vinny alone are pretty staggering.

For example, the “Vinny” winner gets:

  1. An Epson 3880 printer
  2. A Wacom Intuos 4 tablet and wireless pen
  3. The Entire collection of Nik Software Photoshop Plug-ins
  4. Two (2) 8 gig 300x UDMA flash cards from Lexar
  5. An Induro 314 carbon fiber tripod
  6. An Xrite Color Munki
  7. The entire collection of OnOne Software’s Photoshop Plug-ins
  8. All of the Acme Educational titles
  9. An Expodisc and an Expoaperture
  10. A one-year subscription to Kelby Online Training
  11. A signed copy of David Duchemin’s “Within the Frame”
  12. A signed Vincent Versace print

That is just an amazing prize package, plus you get the Vinny Award itself (which Mr. Versace presents himself during the Guru Awards ceremony).

Best of all, there’s no entry fee (again, this competition is only open to registered Photoshop World attendees). Here’s a link with details on how to enter the Photoshop World Guru Awards and take your shot at winning “The Vinny.”

My thanks to Vincent for putting together such an amazing prize package, and thanks to Wacom, Lexar, OnOne Software, Nik Software, Xrite, Epson, Induro, and all the sponsors of this year’s Vincent Vercsace Award for Excellence in Digital Imaging.

Tuesday News Stuff
June 16th, 2009 (7 Comments)

Hi folks. It’s Tuesday, and time for some news:

dv_psutv_2

  • The Best of Photoshop User TV, Volume 2 now on DVD
We released Volume 2 of “The Best of Photoshop User TV” on DVD (shown above) and it’s packed with the best tutorials and tips from the last couple of years on the air, and it features “The Photoshop Guys” (Me, Matt Kloskowski and Dave Cross). Besides the tons of tutorials, there’s also a hilarious blooper reel (read as humiliating) and that alone is worth the price of the DVD (not really). However, it is filled with more than two hours of nothing but our best tutorials from the show, and you can order yours right here.
  • Worldwide Photo Walk “Add Your City” Deadline This Thursday
The deadline for applying to have a walk in your city is coming up this Thursday, June 18th, so if you’ve been thinking of leading a walk—better apply for one now (here’s the link).
  • Photo Walk Update
    1. First, big news: We’ve added yet another sponsor to my Worldwide Photo Walk and they (like the rest of the sponsors) have added some sweet prizes to the photo contest part of the walk. Please join me in welcoming X-Rite (link) as a sponsor, who has graciously sweetened the Grand Prize by adding a ColorMunki Photo, and now each of the 10 finalists will get an X-rite mini color checker as well. Sweet!
    2. We have now passed 14,000 walkers, and we have nearly 870 walks scheduled around the world. I hope you can join us (it’s free!). Here’s the link to join a walk in your city.
    3. We have a number of countries that have multiple walks in different cities, including: Canada, India, Australia, Mexico, Thailand, The UK, Spain, The Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden and The Philippines.
  • New iPhone Remote App for Nikon Cameras In The Works over at OnOne
We talked with our buddy Mike Wong over at OnOne Software yesterday, and he let us know they’re developing an iPhone-based wireless camera release for Nikon cameras, similar to what they did last month for Canon cameras (here’s the link). I’ll let you know as soon as its available (and a big hats-off to OnOne and Mike for taking the initiative to create more cool tools for photographers).
  • Springs of Hope Kenya Orphanage Update
I heard from Molly Bail, the woman behind the Springs of Hope Kenya Orphanage (link) with an update on the building progress. Although they hoped to open on June 1st, apparently building projects don’t move as quickly in Kenya as they’d hoped. They still have some electrical and painting to do and lots of finishing work, but Molly seems very hopeful that everything will be done by August. They are still feeding and caring for the children in the meantime, but by August they’ll finally have a roof over their head (thanks to the efforts of so many people from this blog. In fact, another $500 check came in from a reader just this week). I’ll keep you guys updated on the progress as I hear from Molly.
  • New “Illustrator CS4 for Beginners” Online Class from Dave Cross
We released a new online class over at Kelby Training Online from our own Dave Cross, and if you’ve ever wanted to really learn Adobe Illustrator, this is your chance because Dave does an amazing job of getting you up and running fast. Here’s the link with class descriptions.
  • Tomorrow’s Special Guest Blogger is…..
….Orlando, Florida-based portrait photographer Jon-Paul Douglas. My assistant/digitaltechguy/photowalkblogger/DTownTVtecheditor Brad Moore first turned me onto to Jon-Paul’s work (here’s the link) and his blog (here’s that link) earlier this year and he’s incredibly creative in both pursuits. If you’ve got a minute, make sure you check out his portfolio (I particularly like the way his images fill the entire window. What a great way to show your work!), and then make sure you’re back here tomorrow to check out his special guest blog.

That’s it for this Tuesday, folks. I’ll see you back here on Thursday for my most embarrassing photo yet. Yikes! Have a great day everybody. :)

News Update (from Kennebunkport, Maine)
July 12th, 2007 (8 Comments)

babygirlsm.jpg

Hi everybody. I’ve been really enjoying my vacation time off here in Maine, and my family is just loving it (I got this shot of my 17-month-old daughter the first day we got here–click on it for a larger version). The weather has been overcast (with gray skies every day), so I haven’t done really any outdoor shooting, and yesterday my brother and I played a great local golf course (it was nice and cool—unlike the swealtering heat of Tampa back home). However, today is just beautiful, and I hope to exploring the area today with camera in hand. It’s the first time I’ll be trying out the new Gitzo Traveler Tripod with the smaller “Really Right Stuff BH-40″ ballhead (the little brother to the world class BH-55) that my wife got me for Father’s Day.

Now, onto some news:

  • You know how I love retouching sites, and this one is pretty cool. I found this site (from retoucher Rodrigo Bessane) from an Extreme Photoshop Retouching video he posted on YouTube, and I followed the link to his site. Although he’s not doing tutorials, just seeing what he retouched, and how the final image came out is an education unto itself, and definitely worth a visit (click right here).
  • For the past few month I’ve been using X-Rite’s Eye-One Display 2 hardware calibration system (and loving it by the way—I wrote about it in my new “CS3 Book for Digital Photographers), and I just learned that they’re hosting a one-day seminar in various US Cities. It’s called the “Picture Perfect Color Seminar” and it’s taught by pro photographer Phil Nelson. For details on their tour, click this link.
  • Corey Barker (The Photoshop Lad) has just released a new 21-day online course called “Adobe Illustrator Down & Dirty Tricks,” and if you’re an Illustrator user, you’ve got to check it out. It’s over at PhotoshopTraining.com
  • Adobe’s photography evangelist George Jardine has just posted the latest installment of his Lightroom Podcast series, and this episode features an interview with Eric Scouten from the Lightroom Team. Check it out right here.
  • I saw on Rob Galbraith.com where photojournalist David Honl (who I’ve mentioned here in the blog), has just come out with a really interesting looking set of dedicated flash modifiers (in fact, I might have to pick up a set myself—they really look helpful). I’d start with Rob’s article (there’s a really great photo of the modifiers there), and check out his article on it, and then if you want to pick them up, head over to David’s site. Here’s the link to Rob’s coverage.
  • Want a little Thursday inspiration? Check out the photography of John Lehet (I was turned on to his work by a NAPP member named Harold [he didn't give his last name]). It’s a nice way to start your Thursday.

Well, breakfast is here, and I’ve got to run. Have a great Thursday everybody!
