I’ve had so many people who were a part of my 2nd annual Worldwide Photo Walk write in to tell me that we should do a book made up of the great photos taken that day, that I thought I should at least investigate the idea.

I love the idea of creating a beautiful coffee-table style and quality book, with a simple, clean no-nonsense layout, that lets the photos take center stage and do all the talking.

I see it including more than just some of the winning shots. I would love it if it included some group shots from walks around the world, and shots of people shooting during the walk, and some shots that weren’t even picked by the local winners—but are still great shots and deserve to be recognized, and I just want to share visually what an amazing day it was, and some of the amazing images that were created that day.

To do something like this would take a lot more work than you might imagine. For example, because we’d be selling the book, I’d have to get permission for every single image we want to use in the entire book, which I would envision would include hundreds of images. But that’s just one of the hurdles, which include creating the layout, printing, marketing the book, and on and on (books aren’t easy).

In the spirit of the World Wide Photo Walk, I don’t want to do all this just to make another book of interesting photos. I want to capture the spirit of the walk and use this opportunity for something bigger (you knew this coming, right?). I would want to have this book feed some hungry children half way around the world that really need our help.

By sending 100% of the profits from the book to the Springs of Hope Kenya orphanage (to house and feed the orphans that the readers of this blog have adopted with their hearts and with their pocketbooks), This would make the book extend way beyond what we did on July 18th to something much bigger. But before I get all carried away with the idea, I need to hear from you.

Here are some things I need to know:

If you participated, how would you feel about donating the use of your image for the book?

If you participated in the walk, does this sound like a book you’d buy, even if your image wasn’t included in the book? (After all, we had around 32,000 participants, who took literally millions of photos that day, so only a small percentage of walkers’ photos would wind up being included).

Do you think other people, who didn’t participate in the walk would buy the book?

I love this idea on so many levels, but I have a fear that the logistics of putting it all together, (getting all the releases and permissions and then either finding a publisher who wants to donate their services, or publishing it ourselves, and then trying to market it, distribute it, fulfill orders, etc.), might be even more work than putting on the Photo Walk itself (which was a huge undertaking).

Anyway, before I even start researching what all would be involved, I’d love to hear your feedback and ideas on how we can make this work, and whether you feel the project would be a success in the first place.

I look forward to hearing what you think about this whole concept, and thanks in advance for helping me navigate these waters.

-Scott

Today I’m going to give my personal favorites in a bunch of different categories, from images that didn’t become one of the finalists or the Grand Prize winner, but I felt were so great that they deserved some recognition as well.

Here’s what so amazing to me about all this. If the winning images you saw yesterday, and here today, were entered in a regular photo contest, none of us would blink an eye—-a great image is a great image. But most contest allow you to choose any photo from your entire lifetime of shooting, or perhaps any photo taken in the last year, or any photo in a particular category. But in this case, here’s what the photographers were up against.

They were not able to choose the location (it was chosen for them).

They were not able to choose the time of day (it was chosen for them).

They were only able to shoot for two hours.

They shot in the light that was there. They couldn’t go back later (or earlier) in better light.

Yet they came away that images that are inspiring, creative, and in many cases, breathtaking! That’s what makes this so special. Two hours. That’s it. And look what they came up with! To me, that makes these images, and the ones chosen yesterday, all the more amazing.

Before we get to seeing some images, there were some recurring themes in the types of photos that where picked by local winners, and went into judging to become finalists. For example, there were:

Lots of HDR shots

Lots of shots of other Photo Walk photographers

Lots of shots of reflections

Lots of shots of homeless people

Lots of shots of children

Lots of bees landing on flowers

Lots of people seen through store windows

Lots of Bridges

Lots of Churches (inside and out)

Lots of shots of statues and art

Lots of shots of stairs

Lots of train shots

Anyway, it gives you an broad view of what people wound up shooting a lot of.

The images that follow are my favorites that didn’t make their way into the prize category, but are nonetheless deserving of recognition:

This was incredibly hard. Even harder than I thought.

Last year it was really tough coming up with my finalists and winner, but this year’s judging was more than just four times harder—not just because four times as many people participated—but because the sheer quality of the shots this year was just over the top.

There were so many amazing, intriguing, fascinating, and just fun shots, that it made going from nearly 900 shots down to 10 finalists and one winner incredibly challenging. But, instead of keeping you waiting; let’s get to the winners, and we’ll talk more in a moment.

First, the 10 finalists (who all win the following prizes):

OK, folks, here we go (listed in no particular order):

‘Newcastle Baths”
By Sam Wong (Newcastle, Australia)
The colors in this one just blew me away. I love the still water, the sky is amazing, and the location is eerie and beautiful at the same time. The leading lines in the photo work so wonderfully well, and while I’m not sure where it was taken, I’d love just to see it in person.

‘Purple Lady’ (above)
By Saz80 (London, England)
When I look at this image, I just want to know her story. She looks like she’s led a fascinating life, and has amazing stories to tell. I love the flower in her hair, the look on her face, and the wonderful lighting. I even love the coffee cup—it all adds to the story. The colors work so well together and the composition is spot on. The shot, and the subject, have an awful lot of character. I wish I had taken it.

By Frank Thys (Brussels, Belgium) above
This is one of those images that I fell in love with the first time I saw it. The overhead viewing perspective is just great, and the fact that you don’t see anyone else really makes it interesting to me. The shadows are great, the colors are great, the whole thing just works. Love it!

‘Vannlilje / Hot and Cold’ (above)
By Sevinove (Bergen, Norway)
This is as beautiful a flower shot as I’ve seen. There were a lot of flower shots entered in the competition but this one stands alone. The light is perfect. The water drops—fortuitous. And the composition—-on the money. Absolutely beautiful. The photographer should sell it as a poster.

‘Newspaper Light’ (above)
By Jeroen Idema (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
This is another one I liked instantly. Trying to lead the viewer to look where you want is always a challenge, but the the color (or lack thereof), and the strong leading lines really make the man on the bike stand out even though the brightest part of the photo (which usually draws the eye first) is behind him. Really nicely captured.

By Marcllus (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) above
I just flat out love this shot. The way the soccer (footballs/futballs) are all in the air at the same time, and nearly at the same height, under incredible light—the whole thing looks staged (but you know it wasn’t). Even the lens flare works in this image—the whole thing just works. You keep looking at it and looking at it (stop looking at the woman’s behind in the center—–this photo is not about that!). It’s about capturing a moment in fantastic light, which the photographer did brilliantly.

‘Pouting’ (above)
By Sudiruabdullah (Brunei)
For me, this one is about color and composition. I love how this one is composed—-drawing all your attention right to the subject, and you lose nothing because of her small size in relation to the overall image—her expression is crisp and clear, and her outfit is priceless. Nice subtle post-processing.

‘Path to Paradise’ (above)
By Rsuello (Cebu City, Philippines)
There is just something about the shot. Again, really strong composition, great color throughout, and the fact that you see just part of the subject, (which I love) made this one of my favorites. The juxtaposition of the elegant marble and the torn shorts and bare feet make you wonder what the story is (and who the subject is). Really nicely done.

‘Caught on Tape’
By Gtilute (Pittsburgh, PA, USA)
The s-curve leading down to the subject would almost make a great shot in a class on photo composition, but what I really love about this is the subject’s body position. At first glance, I thought it was the photographer (since he’s standing in front of a tripod), but if you look closer, he’s on a skateboard. That doesn’t take away from this wonderfully composed shot. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the person in the foreground on the left, but even with that, it was one of my very favorite shots right from the beginning. Great eye to capture this one.

On the Marina
By Son Papdi (Chennai, India)
I have no idea what this cart is doing by the edge of the ocean, and maybe that’s what I like about it (of course, besides the composition, color, and nice post processing). As I narrowed things down, this one just kept making the cut again and again, and well…here it is as a finalist. I really like it on every level.

And now….the Grand Prize Winner, who will win all of these incredible prizes:

And the winning image is:

‘Can’t stop smiling’
By Ajummumo (Amphawa, Thailand)
Her wonderful smile draws you in. So does the color. The composition. The story waiting to be told. The perspective. The sharpness of the image, and the warmth of it all, and how well all the different colors and shapes work together to create my very favorite image from the walk. I love it–love it—love it!!!!!!

Way to go Ajummumo, and a big congratulations on being the Grand Prize Winner for the 2nd Annual Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk!!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Tomorrow I’m posting a series of other images that, while they didn’t win a prize, are so good that I felt that needed special recognition. So check back tomorrow to see some other amazing shots from the World Wide Photo Walk.

Hi gang: The dust is finally starting to settle from this week’s walk, and amazing images are being submitting to our contest, and on our flickr groups (see yesterday’s post for info on our flickr groups for walkers) Note: The image above is from the Gainesville, Florida walk, led by the wonderful Laurel Housden.

First, a quick little video from my walk in Ybor City, Florida:

Now, onto a quick Photo Walk Q&A:

Q. Will we be able to see the contest images for each city?
A. We just got that feature up and running! You can now go the World Wide Photo Walk site, click on the Cities link up top, choose the city you want to look at, and the uploaded contest photos from that city will appear at the bottom of that page (click on the Thumbnails to see larger images).

Q. When’s the deadline to upload our images for the contest?
A. It’s July 25th at midnight EDT.

Q. Can we really just enter two photos in the contest?
A. Yup. Really.

Q. But I can’t narrow it down to just two.
A. That’s not a question, that’s a statement.

Q. OK, “What if I can’t narrow it down to two?”
A. You must. It’s your destiny.

Q. Do I have to enter the contest?
A. Absolutely not—you don’t have to enter—it’s totally optional, and just for fun, so if you don’t want to enter, don’t upload photos to the World Wide Photo Walk city page—just do the flickr group thing instead. Also, if you think at any time you might whine about who your leader picked as the winner, don’t enter. We have a strict no-whining policy.

Q. Will photos uploaded to the flickr group be entered in the contest?
A. Nope. The flickr groups are just there so you can see what everybody else shot in your city, and around the world.

Q. When will the Grand Prize winners be announced?
A. On August 17th.

Q. Will I win?
A. Probably not.

Q. When can we vote for the People’s Choice Award?
A. As soon as we get that ready to go. Keep an eye on the World Wide Photo Walk site for details.

Q. Do you care if we use Photoshop or something else to edit and otherwise beautify our photos?
A. Not at all. Beautify away.

Q. Who is going to choose the 10 Finalists and Grand Prize winner?
A. Me

Q. Looking at your own portfolio, Scott, you seem to favor Landscape photos and Sports shots, and people shots, and Bridal shots, and commercial shots, and urban/city shots, and stuff like that. Would turning in one of those type of shots increase my chances of winning?
A. No. What will increase your chances of winning will be turning in the very best photo of all the photos entered.

Q. Last year’s winner had a bird it in. Will you be choosing another shot with a bird in it this year?
A. Yes.

Q. Really?
A. I have no idea. I’ll look at all the local walk winners from around the world, then I’ll narrow it down to 11 finalists. My favorite one of those 11 will be the Grand Prize winner.

Q. That doesn’t seem like a very fair way to choose a winner.
A. It does to me.

Q. But that makes it just your opinion?
A. Hey. you’re right.

Q. But what if I disagree with your choice?
A. You can petition the Rules Committee.

Q. Is there a Rules Committee?
A. No.

Q. But not everyone will agree with your choices, right?
A. Not everyone agrees with anyone’s choices on anything, but I’m pretty sure I know at least 11 people who won’t complain one bit with my choices.

Q. I’m not sure I like this.
A. Then don’t enter.

Q. You’re serious, aren’t you?
A. Absolutely.

Q. You’re mean.
A. My daughter tells me that when I put her in ‘Time Out,” so this isn’t the first time I’ve heard that.

Q. Should I just enter the contest, let the chips fall where they may, and just have fun with the whole thing?
A. That’s what I would do. I’ve entered contests before, and didn’t win, and yet I’ve gone on to live a productive and happy life.

Q. OK, thanks for letting me get all that off my chest. Ya know, when it comes down to contests, people tend to get all crazy and everything, and their emotions sometimes get the best of them. Sorry I was so harsh before.
A. No worries. At the end of the day, I’ll be as fair and objective as I can. I take this stuff seriously so you don’t have to. Remember, this whole thing is supposed to be fun, so just let it be just that. The Photo Walk wasn’t about the prizes; it was about making new friends, and enjoying being together while we make photos—something we all love doing—and that’s exactly what happened, all over the world, at once.

Q. You’re absolutely right.
A. That’s something I rarely hear. Thanks!

Well, it’s in the History Books now, but this weekend’s Worldwide Photo Walk, by any measure, was a really amazing event. To have that many people (final count: 32,000+ registered walkers), all sharing a social event of this scale, and taking millions of photographs, is just a very special thing to be a part of—just ask anyone would joined one of the 900+ walks around the world on Saturday. Just….wow!

On Sunday, I ran into one of the participants on my Ybor City, Florida walk, and he was going on and on about how much he enjoyed the walk, and how surprised he was at how much he enjoyed it. He said he had never done anything like that before, and really didn’t know what to expect. In fact, he said he really wondered what all the fuss was about, but now he knows. That spoke volumes. You can read about it. See pictures of it. But you just have to do it once, and then you “get it.” Now, he totally gets what all the fuss is about.

One of the most exciting things for me, was watching our Twitter group (hashtag SKPhoto) and Tweets from walkers around the world during their walk. I Tweeted a number of times during my local walk, posting photos and comments, but just sitting there at the restaurant afterward, and seeing posts pop-in with comments as walks were starting or ending all over, was just incredible. Almost kinda surreal as it was all happening in real time.

My local Ybor City event was a blast. I had such a great group—just the best folks, and although it was fairly hot in the sun, we had lots of overhangs and balconies along our route, and some non-expected cool breezes that helped a lot, and really made for a pleasant walk, considering we were talking in Florida in July. (The group photo at the top of this post was taken by Erik Kuna).

RC Concepcion came along to help me out, and he was really helpful (he did a mini-session on shooting for HDR), and he got some great shots himself, borrowing an SB-800 flash and setting up shoots along the way.

I hardly took any shots at all—I spent most of my time visiting with walkers in my group and answering questions, and it was just as well, cause the few shots I did take were pretty lame, as is evidenced by my Lightroom grid above (click on it for a larger view. Please don’t chuckle). But it didn’t spoil my day—I had such a great time.

Our ending spot was The Spaghetti Warehouse in Ybor Square, where we had one long table for 50 set up just for us. The restaurant really rolled out the red carpet for us—they were fantastic—very accommodating, and the service was excellent! We spent about two hours sharing stories, photos, laughs, and lots of great spaghetti!

Anyway, it was just such a kick to think that the same thing was happening, had just happened, or was about to happen all over the world that same day, with photographers all sharing in the experience.

SPECIAL NOTE: Tomorrow I’m doing a Photo Walk Q&A for everyone who walked in, or led a Walk, with lots of info on stuff you guys want to know, so make sure you check back here tomorrow for LOTS of new details, and contest info, plus where to see lots of really amazing photos.

My thanks to everyone who attended my walk, and who participated in other walks around the world.

A big, big thanks to the volunteers who organized and led walks around the world (We couldn’t have done it without you).

Also, a thanks to my book Publisher Peachpit Press, for their major support of this event, and to all the sponsors who pitched in to make this something very special.

Hey, whatdasay we do this again next year!

Although we’ll be hosting the photos ourselves that you’ll be submitting for the Photo Walk photography competition, we thought it would also be important for each city to have their own local flickr group where walkers could upload a number of their favorite shots (not just the competition shots).

Besides that local site, we created a single Main Worldwide PhotoWalk flickr Group where any worldwide photo walk participant could upload some of their favorite shots to share with everybody who walked around the world.

Our own RC Concepcion has created two videos (below) that show you:

(1) How to join the flickr group set up by your local Photo Walk leader (if your leader hasn’t set up a flickr group yet, there’s a link on today’s Photo Walk blog with a video and instructions on how to do so), and…

(2) RC’s video on how to upload your photos to the Master flickr Worldwide PhotoWalk Group.

First, how to find, join, and upload to your city’s flickr group:

Now, here’s how to find and join the Main Worldwide Photowalk Group:

It’s finally here—-my 2nd Annual World Wide Photo Walk is tomorrow, and by tomorrow night more than 30,000 photographers around the world will collectively have taken literally millions of photos as part of their local Photo Walks. That just boggles my mind!

Here’s a few last minute Photo Walk things:

(1) Walk Leaders: Make Sure You Watch my Video
If you’re leading a walk, I made a special video (Called “A Special Message from Scott”) to help you make your walk a success, and there’s some VERY important info in that video, so please make absolutely sure you watch it before your walk. You’ll find this video when you log into your local walk page.

(2) Matt’s Workflow Video is Live!
We’ve now posted Matt’s Lightroom Workflow videos, including a video on how to upload your photos for the contest. Here’s the link.

(3) 30,000 and Counting!
By the time you read this, we’ll be well past 30,000 registered walkers. I’m lovin’ it!!!!!! What a great Saturday we’re going to have!!!!

(4) Get a Group Shot Right at the Beginning
Don’t forget to take a group shoot before you head out for your walk (it’ll be much harder to corral everybody after the shoot, so get one right before you head out).

(5) Don’t miss My Other Post Today about Something Very Special for All Walkers!
It’s way cool, and we’ve never done anything like it before.

(6) This is The Gear I’m Taking on My Photo Walk
A Nikon D-5000 camera with just one lens; an 18-200mm f/3.5 – f/5.6 VR lens. I’ll have my Hoodman Loupe with me; my Rapid Strap, and my Epson P-6000 will be in my camera bag for on-site back-up. That’s right—I’m travelin’ light, baby!

(7) Wear Really Comfortable Shoes
You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you wear shoes that make your feet happy.

(8) Charge all your batteries tonight
Don’t forget to charge your camera batteries, clean your lenses (and sensor), and make sure you’ve got an empty memory card and a back-up.

(9) The Most Important Thing Is….
That you all stay safe. Look out for each other on the walk. Drink plenty of water beforeh and during the walk. Keep an eye on your gear at all times. Don’t go into scary-looking areas, traipsing down deserted alleys, or anyplace that looks unsavory. Don’t get distracted by shooting—you don’t want to bump into, or trip over, anything. Get some great shots, and I’ll see you back here on Monday for a recap of the event.

A special thanks to our wonderful sponsors who made all of this happen, and to all the photographers around the world who volunteered to lead walks, and my humble thanks to you all for being a part of his historic photography event;

All my best,

-Scott

Hi Gang:
Just two more days, but there’s a lot of cool stuff happening, like:

(1) We added a New Prize Category
I think you’re going to like this; it’s a “People’s Choice” award, where you guys (photo walkers) get to choose a winner from all the local winning entries to win a separate prize package (hey, this won’t be easy—you’ll have to choose one out of around 915 local winners). More details to come.

(2) We’re in USA Today
The nation’s largest newspaper ran a story on the Photo Walk in their Technology section yesterday. Here’s the link to read it online. (How cool is that!!!).

(3) Special Email for Walk Leaders
An email went out to all the leaders yesterday with some last-minute details, a handy-checklist, and other important leader stuff, so if you’re a Walk Leader, make sure you keep an eye out for it.

(4) Photo Walk Lightroom Workflow Tutorial
Matt Kloskowski has put together a Lightroom Workflow Video Tutorial for people participating in the walk, and we’ll be making that available shortly as well. Keep an eye out here, or on the Photo Walk site for more details.

(5) Don’t forget Brad and Jeff
Brad Moore and Jeff Revell are posting a steady stream of posts and ideas about this Saturday’s walk, so make sure you visit the official Photo Walk site, and PhotoWalkPro.com before Saturday to get the latest info.

(6) Don’t miss my Walk advice article
On Tuesday I posted an article with some advice for anyone participating in the Photo Walk, so if you missed it, here’s that link again.

(7) We now have over 29,000 Photographers signed up to Walk
I know. It’s Crazy.

That’s it for today. Check back tomorrow for any last-minute advice (and quite possibly we’ll be pulling another rabbit out of our hat!).
